I loved the ruger SR556 but it is a lil top heavy with all the rails and would be more than you're wanting to spend. I think the stag will be closer to your price range and give you some money left over for a decent scope, maybe new grips?

there's a way easier way to do this, you can cut a rectangle peice of aluminum from a pop can, make it into an "m", roll the top portion down so there's a lil "tooth" of aluminum exposed with a band at the top and then you can slide it down into the lock.
