Thanks for the good info and compliment. I wouldn't have thought about the brake bias that way. I really wanted to just get it race worthy, but the left rear spring is broken at the top so I'll have to do something with it. The way the sits now nothing has ever been messed with in the suspension and I can just see it snowballing. What do you think would be the most effective chassis stiffening mod? This thing has a lot of cowl shake, and just feels like it needs frame ties like the Camaro did.

I just sold our 2001 3800 Impala, and with 165k miles it was a great car. Mine still had a lot of original parts, never did anything to the engine but change the valve cover gaskets, tune-up, and change the oil. I know these cars rather well so if you have questions I can help you out. As I'm sure you've figured out I'm also a GM tech.

Hopefully he bought a 3800 and won't have nearly as much of that shit. Of course the 3800 will do it too, just not nearly as often

This, if you're nice to me you could swing by my work and I'll do it for you. We typically charge people a half hour which is $45, but I help out people I know, doesn't take long, just make sure you get the right remote because there are a few different part numbers. If you're not sure you could call a local parts department.

Well just having fun and seeing how well I can make it handle is what I'm interested in. Going to SCCA events and putting effort into being competetive doesn't sound like much fun to me. I raced karts as a kid and when we couldn't go without winning it stopped being fun, I don't even want to start down that road.

Well got in into the shop today for a really good inspection, left rear spring is broken at the top, looks to have original shocks, calipers might just be 20 years old too and not functioning very well, lots of rusty bolts and things to work on. The rust is mostly cosmetic, and the underside looks really good for a 20 year old car. It really needs stiffened up, cowl shake is very prevelant over bumps, and the car just feels like its flexing to me. So for a clutch I'm thinking a stock replacement, I'm not going for a powerfull car and this should work fine. Brakes I would like to upgrade since I really want to do everything, but since I'm on a budget with this thing I think it'll get all stock parts except for pads and stainless lines. I'm going to be replacing the lines to the back as they are pretty rusty before I go autocrossing with it. Suspension will be more of a spring project most likely, but right now I'm thinking of a coilover set-up, some sway bars, and replacing every bushing in the car as these are all 20 years old. This looks to be a big project seeing as how everything is heavily rusted over and if I want to adjust the aligment without breaking anything all this will need replaced. Then comes getting the chassis stiffened up, there are lots of products out there for this type stuff. I'm not sure which will help out the most so I'm open to suggestions. I'm liking the Boss Frog line of parts and for a car mostly set up for autocross collecting all of their stuff seems like a logical step. If I can break these projects down into pretty small steps so I can do them at work after hours and on saturdays it would be best. Obviously all my tools are at work with air, electric, and a lift. So I'm going to be looking for some stock control arms to put new bushings in so I can just cut all this old crap out and throw it away bolt in the new stuff and go. Where can I get replacement sheet metal for these cars? Specifically quarters and rockers? What are good sway bars for stiff coilovers? Any local places with soem NA Miata used inventory?

More volts or more amps? Because that would change how you hook up a second battery, series or parallel. Series would give you more volts, but I'm not sure the switches and such wouldn't melt. Interesting topic.

I think you fit in just fine, not sure where that comes from. I feel that way sometimes but as I got older I just decided "fuck it" if people don't like the way I am I'll find some people who do.

I'll take Top Gear British style over any other car show period. Hope everyone enjoyed the season premiere on BBC America last night, I sure did. For the 2 shows you listed Top Gear US is far better then the Car Show, I turned the Car Show off partway in because it was just outright boring. The guys who host Top Gear US aren't very interesting to watch either.

Driven many of those as work trucks in the past, dead reliable with the 4 cylinder or 3.0L V6. I was always partial to the S10 but the rangers are way better then the shit GM sells now for small trucks. Congrats on the purchase.

So I bought a Miata, its in decent shape. Pics to come, some of you saw Apache's for sale thread. I want to keep it close to stock for now, so this thread should be helpfull to me as I'm a Miata noob. All advise and help appreciated. With the long drive home last night I noticed a few things, the clutch is pretty worn and I noticed it slipping a little a few times so that needs replaced. The brakes seem to drag so that will need sorted out. I think just using quality oe level parts will work for me on this stuff. The car handles well, feels like it'll be fun to drive with a solid clutch. So what I need is educated on the aftermarket companies that specialize in Miata parts, stuff to stay away from, and suggestions, all are welcome. It's been quite a while since i was at square 1, and since I don't know specifics, thats where I am.

I think it'll vary slightly depending on county, trucks are more, but my Camaro was around $110.

Make sure everything on the left front is free, this would be the first thing I'd check. Can't say I know exactly how the brakes are set up on your VW, but if it only pulls under braking then it's most likely the front and the side opposite the pull causing the problem. It would be a good idea to compare how everything moves from side to side, I mean take the calipers off and check the pads, calipers, and slides. Also after using the brakes a couple hard stops get out and feel the wheels see which brakes are getting the most use.
