There are as many details to work out as there are government programs, but keep things clean think about it this way: Over a lifetime, a person is either going to be a net tax payer (putting more $ into the system than they receive in benefit) or net receiver. I don't know exactly where that break point sits in the US... but I am guessing a person earning the 30th percentile of income over their working career will be a bit net receiver of government transfers.

I think you guys are throwing in the towel a little too quickly... The only places in the article I am seeing where the US is beat is in the 20th and 30th income percentiles, and only by Canada and Norway. Both Tiny nations population wise, with large chunks of their economy fueled by natural resource extraction. I think the rear comparison should account for both government transfers (handouts) and purchasing power.

Do these always suck so bad, or am I having a bad case? I am taking off the bodywork of a new-to-me 2005 CBR that has probably been sitting more of its life than ridden. The screw portion in these particular type of plastic clips have all been seized to the point where the (soft plastic) head of the screw will strip before it ever turns. I've ended up just cutting many of them off. 2 fasteners that won't budge and will be tricky to cut are the ones that hold the air duct covers in place. Tricky to cut because I don't have access to the back of the fastener-- it hooks inside the air duct. What to do about these? Is it in any way usual for these to stick so badly? And is there anything better I can replace my cut clips with?

Most of us born before 1990 probably have memories of family trips across the country, lying around in the back seat with no seatbelt. Think about the risk per vehicle mile traveled time actual miles traveled. Motorcycle riders are something like 34-time as likely to die per vehicle mile traveled overall. (its actually quite a bit less when booze is taken out of the equation and helmets added.) But take 34 as a given. This guy probably rode about mile or 2 with his kid steering in that position. As a kid with no seatbelts, which is about as likely to kill you on the highway in the event of a collision, my family damn-sure covered more than 34 or so miles. TL/DR: My parents subjected me and my sister to a hell of a lot more risk than this good ole boy in the video. I hope certain folks in this thead dont want to involve child protective services, as they're pretty good people.

On the extreme edge of performance, on a course like Suzuka, I think F1 times are 20+ seconds per lap faster than Moto GP.

+1 to Brian and Hollywood. Most tracks you need to be getting into supercar territory before turning better times than the 600s. In the tracks I ran most frequently in autos, VIR and NJMP, my lap times were 2-5 seconds behind the fast 600s. This is in everything from a well sorted GT mustang, 400 whp Sti, and Carrera. M5s and Z06s are probably the least expensive autos that start to pull away from 600s on the track. Assuming apples to apples skill level between pilots.

Echoing Bad here. I am not knowledgeable about the intricacies of the Kawi, but $4000 is well high for an 03 CBr. In 05 they shed 15lb in weight and got the inverted forks. 07-08 was another major overhaul and is considered The best of the earlier gen cbr. Newer models still gain the big piston forks, electronic steering damper, better brakes, better midrange, etc, which all should drive down the price of first gens. In any sport bike around the 10 year mark, regardless of milage and especially if it has sat, budget for oil (at least 1 flush)/brake fluid/coolant, fork oil/rebuild, tires, chain, maybe an air filter. One issue particular to those years of cbr is the wiring connection to the headlights, both in the headlight switch and under the start button. Check this operation before buying as they may need re - soldered. All this can add $500 of cost if you do it yourself, and God knows if you pay to have it serviced.

I am wondering how they might compare to Michelin's sport-tourers, and if Michelin would be worth the premium. Scott at Iron Pony would get you into the FZ09 at a very competitive price. If that's too much bike for your needs right now, I'd wait it out a few months until Yamaha brings the FZ07 to the states. Early reviews say it's a pretty brilliant bike. Might be the successor to the SV 650. Sv650 itself may be a good bet for you. Used models go for $3000 and under all year long.

Republicans should get zero credit for any kind of leadership or vision on the healthcare issue. In the run-up to ACA, they had no coheasive and principled ideas, and their messaging was beyond poor and disjointed. The stuff you're linking to Tonik amounts to a bunch of one-off patches that pander to various constituencies. I would have loved to see Republicans advancing a healthcare platform that included just a few simple concepts: - Catastrophic coverage provided persons below a certain (very low) income threshold. - Removal of the distortionary tax-advantage of employer-provided insurance, or at least give parity to private individual plans. - Remove the barriers that are currently preventing the creation of a market for private, cradle-to-grave, catistrophic insurance coverage for individuals. These 3 simple things would have done more to both control costs (by making them more transparent to the consumer) and increase coverage (by covering the poors and eliminating situations where people fall through the cracks between employment) than the ACA, which is a ridiculous super-structure imposed on an already broken system. The above-stuff seems completely in line with the free-market ideas Repubs give lip-service to, but Repubs simply couldnt make a coherent arguement when it mattered.

Over the last few years I've seen too many family members and acquaintances push an older person into invasive interventions that caused unneeded suffering. Seems like oncologists should advocate more for the patient, versus the spouse or children who if given any kind of out, will try to prolong life, quality of life be damned. But that approach doesn't pay the bills I suppose. I used to be the same way, then I had a kid. Now I would gladly drown the dog in my bathtub if it meant the kid would sleep 1 extra hour.

Pharma gets a bad rap from the hoi polloi. It is about the toughest business imaginable to succeed in, and their margins are just not that big. The info is out there -- a quick google of the first 3 the came to mind show profit margins around the 15% range. And for every Merck of the world, there have been 50 upstarts that didnt make it.. If the US squeeze the big drug makers more (as they do in the EU, who are basically being subsidized by US consumers, but thats another topic) it's just less incentive for them to invest in new drug discovery. It takes $750M+ to bring the average drug to market, so they need to recoup that in addition to the sunk costs of R&D that didnt yeild results. Sorry for the semi-rant, I just hate the idea of throwing more roadblocks in front of Pharma. In terms of quality of life and the medical breakthroughs that have really made a difference over the last 100 years-- it's been Phama who has delivered the goods. I'm not even sure these deaths rise to the level of coincidence-- it might just be the expected number of suicides in an n-large population. There must be over 100,000 people working worldwide that could call themselves investment banker. At my old firm we had almost 1000 Analysts in the NY office alone. And almost all of these deaths are junior level people... I'm trying to figure out how a conspiracy is being orchestrated there, lol. In banking even the title of VP is basically junior level.
