  1. Sure, but the odds of him having another accident will be less. Fewer miles driven, less risk exposure.
  2. Can somebody give this kid a job that doesn't involve driving as the job? two accidents in a short time should be a pretty big sign that maybe the kid needs not to be a door dash or delivery driver.
  3. no worries, it's all a matter of preference. the Series 75 does have one of my favorite design features on any car: a door opening that cuts into the roof to allow more headroom when entering. in the 1964 GM lineup only the top of the line Caddy and the corvette did that at the time.
  4. that's a 1964 Cadillac, finding a nice bezel on ebay is pretty cheap and easy. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-Cadillac-Head-Lamp-Door-Bezel-/402266566744 A lot of those parts are stainless and they survive the car after rust got the rest. I think the headlight bezels are actually chromed pot metal so they pit but don't rust. as for your 3d printing question there are significant challenges which would make it cost prohibitive: - The size of the part is large. I have one of the larger home printers and at 310mm X 310 mm for the bed I couldn't print that piece as one unit. It would have to be 2 or 3 pieces glued together. So you are looking at paying an industrial printer to print it for you and that requires a job quote (for an already existing file I am going to guess in the $200 range). - It's a polished piece, which means you need special metal impregnated filament that can be polished. It's also not cheap and probably would never look "right". It's $40 a roll before you even load it into the printer. - Then there is the modeling time. You would need to find someone who is willing to make a 3d model copy of the part. Ideally if someone worked at OSU they could use OSU's 3d scanner to make a base model and then tweak it. Otherwise it's like 60 hours for someone to build the model from scratch. I just don't see it feasible when a decent one on ebay is between $20 and $100. FWIW, while I am sure it is a nice car, The one to the right of the picture is a pillarless hardtop 4dr. This means when all the windows are down it looks like a hardtop coupe (no B-pillar) and to me that's a much nicer car than what looks like the series 75(?) that you are looking at. Unless you like the 60's chauffeured limo look, then by all means carry on.
  5. awesome project. Keep an eye on the front/rear weight bias. One of the many things that makes the 1991 318is special is that it has 50/50 front/rear weight balance, just like the E30 M3. The other cars don't (but are close). I am sure that aluminum gxp mill won't be any heavier than the M42 it is replacing, but I just thought I would mention it.
  6. These are Road Cars, I am not even sure they are "track oriented" road cars so much as they are competitors to the existing european performance cars. The CT4 V blackwing is basically an ATS-V successor and is supposed to be slated against the RS3, BMW M2, and AMG CLA. Of those three, only the M2 and the caddy will offer a manual so it makes sense why they would resurrect the 6MT to grab some market share. It will also be RWD only and the engine is unknown at this point but it will probably be near the 464hp mark the ATS-V had. The CT5 V Blackwing is the successor for the CTSV. As such it will have the same V8. There is a CT5V but that is no longer anything but a badge and body "upgrade" - Blackwing is the new "V". The car aims at the M3, Alfa Quadrafoligio and AMG C63. It's a completely new chassis and body, but the same CTSV drivetrain plus the manual people wanted the CTSV to have but didn't in it's 3rd gen. Since it is a carry over V8, it's 650hp. Cadillac needs some halo cars. The ATS-V despite being a really good car didn't inspire sales like the first and 2nd gen CTS-Vs did, and they need to capture some of that magic to move the more pedestrian units. I think these cars will do it, although I am skeptical about the decision not to put a v8 in the CT4 V Blackwing. People want a bargain luxury car v8 from cadillac, its what they expect. There are some M2 buyers who buy the M2 because it still is powered by a BMW I6 and to them that delivers the pure experience. If you put a Chevy SS 6mt and an AST-V 6mt in front of me at the same price I'd pick the ls3 powered Chevy SS every time, because (insert musclecar noises here).
  7. I used to sell Zero back when all they had was the S and the DS. Ride one, it will change your mind. It's an electric motorcycle and that's the point. There are people who want an electric motorcycle that don't want a bicycle architecture or anything nearly as lightweight. There are already electric bicycles and that tech is at it's limits until the next battery tech advancement that makes the battery much smaller. The biggest challenge to electric adoption in the city is charging. In really urban areas there aren't a lot of places for an apartment owner to charge their bike. Most don't have garage or even outdoor outlet access. An electric motorcycle works as well as a bicycle in an urban environment so there is no advantage to a smaller lighter one that you can't take on the highway.
  8. woah...I am not sure this is such a great choice. VanVan's are notorious for their short range and small fuel capacity. Stock their fuel tank is something like 1.7Gal and the range is little over 100 miles. Suzuki claims it gets 70 mpg, but in real world trail riding it's closer to sixty. Despite being a small single it's not very fuel efficient because of the balloon tires and low gearing. I'll ask around but I am pretty sure the profit margin on a van van is just under $1000. It's happy place is around 40 mph and it can't carry a lot, it's a good "hunting" bike where you have to haul a cooler, a bedroll and tent, and a couple of rifles, but I wouldn't ever consider conquering the wilderness on one without heavy modification. The weirdo tire size (18 front 14" rear) is a turn off as well, hard to get tubes and tires in semi-rural US outside of a suzuki dealer, going to need to bring an extra set with you if you are going into the wild. In the mean time consider these alternatives: Honda CRF 250 Rally: The gold standard for small displacement around the world travel. It does get an actual 70mpg and can go faster than the vanvan's theoretical 70mph top speed. There are quite a few companies that make bolt on aux tanks for this bike taking the fuel capacity from 2.7 gal to 3.6 and the range to over 200miles per tank. top speed is 80mph too and it can cruise at 65-70 meaning short highway jumps are feasible. BMW 310 GS: Yeah its an indian built single cyl beemer that is made of the cheapest suspension parts imaginable, but it also gets a 70 mpg real world fuel economy and has a range stock of close to 200 miles. It is routinely listed as one of the more fule efficient bikes ont he market today. Rally Raid makes a luggage setup that mounts to Rotopax fuel cells meaning you can push this out to 250 miles before you are out of gas. it also has a 90+ mph top speed. It's also the most expensive one here at $6600 msrp, but it wasn't a good seller and the margin on the beemer is a little bigger than the vanvan. I see leftover 2019s going for about $5500 and used 1 year old models for $4500 or less. Royal Enfield himalayan: Another indian made motorcycle but it's a quality piece. It is probably the biggest displacement single here at 400ccs but don't let that fool you, I used to sell Royal Enfields and I routinely saw 70mpg out of the 500cc bullet singles, so it's a fuel efficient engine. The fuel tank is 3.9 Gal, and SRC makes a kit to carry an extra 1.5 Gal pushing your fuel capacity to 5.4 gal. It is the only bike we have discussed that gets 250 mile range off the showroom floor. The downside is there are no leftovers of this bike, my friend Dylan who runs Royal Enfield Columbus tells me he sells every one he gets in. That said it's a $4500 msrp bike, which is $200 less than your leftover van van, and comes with a better warranty. If you want I can introduce you to Dylan (or you can just go over there, tell him you are a friend of Kerry and ask for a test ride). That said, I don't know why you wouldn't want to do this on a larger motorcycle, like a 1200GS beemer or a Triumph Tiger. A good portion of the highway is actual roadway, and the hazards are snow up in the mountains, large animal crossings, and road crews in summer who tear up the roads. I've know more than a few guys who have done the whole highway on big twin evo harleys. I could see the small adv bike for something like the trans america trail, but the Al-Can is more touring bike friendly. I would want a pack animal that could carry a lot and has a plug in for heater gear. then again I had a friend that used to ride laps of america on a 1962 vespa GS because he liked the challenge, so...to each their own.
  9. Not trying to discourage you, just pointing out the factors that are involved in how dealers view their inventory. Not saying you can't get a deal, just a better deal is going to be with a bike where the dealer hasn't paid off the full amount of the loan they have to purchase that bike. Personally I think dealer cost is still a good deal - I've bought bikes at dealer cost and never felt I overpaid. That said, dealers don't always act rational. I can't tell you how many dealers I have been in that have had unsold units sit in their warehouses for decades, it's been quite a number over the years. By no rational logic they should have kept these unsold units and dumped them for whatever they could get and freed up the space for a unit that would sell, but for some reason they don't. My favorite was a honda dealer on long island that had a 1989 Hawk GT new in crate. After years of never being able to get $3500 for it (against a $4000 msrp) they sold it for $5K in 2012 to a collector I know. Did they make money? not if you know how inflation or opportunity cost works. what bike are you looking at specifically (year and make/model)? maybe I can help you track down a good deal.
  10. I've had a lot of conversations with people about this very topic over the years from both sides of the transactions. Here are my thoughts: Buyers tend to think that they can get a good deal on a leftover model that has been languishing on the dealership lot for a year or more. However due to the way floor plan financing works the best deal you can ever expect from a dealer on this bike without any mfg incentive is the wholesale cost and that is it. It is extremely rare that you can convince a dealer to lose money on a bike, and most of the time with a languishing leftover a dealer will be upfront and mark the bike down to their cost. Margins on a lot of bikes are small - like around $2-3k depending on the bike so that's probably the best deal you are going to get $2-3K off. I don't even bother looking at leftovers unless it is a bike I really want and I know there is a mfg incentive. Now, if you can find an incentive for that bike, then great, that can kick the savings up to around $5K. Most incentives however are usually on existing model years to help the inventory clear out. best one I have ever seen was recently on the yamaha scr950 where yamaha dropped the price to $5K for 2017 models and even then Iron pony had 2 languishing on their showroom floor till mid 2020. Do the research because dealers don't always know the incentive on their own bikes, or they don't mark down the price because the don't think the customer will know - but if you find something and walk in the door with the knowledge you can get the best deal. The best deal you can get on a new bike is a late ordered current model year that has end of the year incentives to move it. I literally had this conversation with a ducati dealer a couple weeks ago where she could offer me $3500 off on a new 2020 supersport that was a late delivery, but the identical bike in a 2019 model where the incentives had expired was marked down $1800 and they couldn't go lower. The incentive was a large chunk, but also being a late delivery they hadn't paid off the floor plan on the bike yet, which means they could still pocket a small profit, even at "dealer cost" by not having to pay the interest on the loan to buy the unit from the mfg (Actual cost). Just to add some covid color to this, I know that some dealers have been slow to drop their prices on left overs. The reason being that during 2020 motorcycle production stopped for a while and a lot of orders went unfilled. I spoke to a bmw dealer friend of mine about a month ago and he told me he got all the 2020s he is ever going to get on certain models and doesn't expect any new units till either july 2021 or the 2022 model year roll out. I know some dealers are waiting out the shortage that they see coming in the 2021 riding season, and as such are asking MSRP for their bikes. They have 2 years before the new bike financing won't accept the models as new for most major lenders (I think with Credit unions it's 5 years) so they are playing the long game.

    Engraving

I've been looking for someone to do some old western style engraving on my ironhead sportster. It's a dying art. like this: that said I don't know what the market is like but there are few people doing it. most of the people I know who have engraving capabilities on their machines do it because they have to add a part number or serialize their parts for warranty.
  12. Tom Hatem did my last one. I bought the battery, I installed it, they just hooked it up to their computer machine and charged me 30min labor. the Carly app on your phone can do it too, but it's like $60 for the adapter and app.
  13. FJ is more comfy than a wrangler, but it ain't going to be the marshmallow cloud of heated and cooled seats that a GC would have. I don't know that it is a 1 trick pony, so much as a really capable SUV. The demo's I drove were a lot more like my '99 2 door Tahoe sport than like a wrangler. A decent amount of comfort layered on top of a solid platform, but not a luxury car like a GC. Speaking of Luxury, have you looked at a Lexus LX? It is the Lexus version of the Toyota Land Cruiser, that oddly sometimes sells for less than the actual land cruiser despite being mechanically the same truck with way more luxury options. Tow rating is 6500lbs, so not bad. $20K should put you solidly in a 10 year old truck with just under 100K miles so about the same as an FJ
  14. thanks guys.... Found this cyber monday deal from Home Depot on the m18 ($269 for the gun, battery, charger, and soft case), good for another 14 hours as of noon today: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M18-FUEL-ONE-KEY-18-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Brushless-Cordless-1-2-in-Impact-Wrench-w-Friction-Ring-Kit-w-One-5-0Ah-Battery-2863-21P/314250371
  15. Tell me about the Milwaukee M12 Impact gun. I found a really good deal on one ($115) but have been holding back on pulling the trigger because it's an M12 and not an M18. Guy in the store said he doubted it would remove a lug nut but I don't think he had enough experience with them.
  16. I looked hard at one for a long time, but then eventually didn't pull the trigger. MT is full time 4wd, which kills the gas mileage. Otherwise I think it's the only way to go with the FJ (but that is just because I hate automatics). They hold their value shockingly well - I still see people asking close to $20K for 13 year old, almost 100K mile trucks. Germain in Easton has a stick one on their lot with 200K miles that they want $16K for so....market for them is a little bonkers. There is someone on here with long term ownership who can probably tell you more about what it is like to live with one. If you are considering an FJ, why not just look at a Pentastar (2012+) JKU Wrangler? If you want something that is trial capable, look for a Willy's Wheeler - It's all the good parts (Lockers, rear axle, shocks, wheels/tires) of a Rubicon without the electronic sway bar disconnect, stickers, and fancy interior. Dad's got a 2016 JKU WW and I've taken it down many of the Long Island trails by his house without an issue, no lift, no winch, no problem. Wheeling a stick rig is how four wheeling went for decades - most jeeps/FJ40s/broncos were stick. Personally I think it is more forgiving than having an automatic, most of wheeling is sticking it in one gear and crawling along anyway.
  17. Because they don't salt the roads. Their snow is usually a blown in cold front from the mountains, but otherwise it's above freezing there most of the time. Snow, melt, repeat. Also low humidity and they use sand and gravel instead of salt.
  18. For a simple question, this is has a complex answer...because, well, people are complex. Do I run into people who self identify as white supremacists? very rarely, but that is kinda the point isn't it. I mean, a neo-nazi isn't going to come out and tell you they are a neo nazi. Andrew Anglin who does self identify as a neo-nazi and runs the daily stormer grew up and lives in Worthington, but if you met him on the street do you think he'd tell you that he was one? It's happened a few times, mostly where I will meet someone, have a great conversation about a common interest (cars, bikes, airplanes, guitars) and after a few conversations I'll friend them on FB, and see that...oh yeah...they repost a lot of openly neo-nazi stuff. It used to happen a lot more when I was younger and had friends in 1% clubs who had connections to those organizations, but most of the time those guys didn't want to associate with me because my name gave it away. Even if they weren't sure and ethnically Irish first name and an ethnically Italian last name were enough of a red flag that I was probably not one of them. Do I meet people that don't think of themselves as "white supremacists" but say white supremacy things? All the time. Hell I caught my mother texting a white supremacist meme (the "you came from there to here, now go back") to people because she was mad at new developers in her town. From that point you have to gauge just how much of what they are saying they believe and how much is them mad at something else and misinterpreting it. I'd say maybe every 1 in 5 isn't trying to say something else and is aware of the ugly history behind some veiled remarks. But every so often you find that one who go a little further, doesn't think of themselves as racist but says things like "stereotypes exist for a reason" in response to something ugly and untrue. I find those same people use the term Jew'ed him down and N****r rigged like it's nothing and think it's the other person's problem when people get uncomfortable around them. there is no black and white test for it, it's on a spectrum. That said I do want to take a pause for a second to acknowledge how effective white supremacy is at marketing, esp to a conservative audience. It's not hard to find people outraged about something, and its less hard to find a way to tap into that while making subtle references to white superiority that a person will ignore and adopt just because they want to be vocal about their anger but can't express it themselves. Conservatism has historically been a political position of mostly angry white men, and has always been in bed with white supremacy since long before this country was founded, for a while men like William F Buckley and Barry Goldwater tried to at least keep it at bay and out of the party, but they died without successors. If you are a conservative and have not come to terms with the massive historical racisim that persists in that political viewpoint and are not working to weed it out - then you are complicit in accepting that it is just a part of being a conservative. Back to the original question. Lets take someone like Mace. Do I think he is personally antisemitic? no. Do I think he is a bad person? also no. Do I think he is ignorant, in every possible sense of the word, on antisemitism? yes. I am sure all his friends say he's a nice guy, and he even thinks of himself as that. However he has so little experience with it and such a strong desire to identify with a particular ideology that he is willing to be, as Greg put it, conned by a conned man into thinking that saying "I want my money counted by people wearing yarmulkes" and that "Jewish people aren't really Americans because of their loyalty to Israel" (both things the president actually said) are not antisemitic things. Do I think Donald Trump is racist? I don't think he identifies as one or is working toward a clear white supremacist agenda but he says and does racist things all the time. I call it Boomer racist: resoundingly ignorant about anything but the white rich experience and has a lot of wrongly preconceived notions about people based on their race, ethnicity, background, et al, but chalks it up to being "old fashioned" and just using common sense. I do think he is an opportunist and sees value in exploiting the more extreme believers of white supremacy and hires people that support them and says things that gets supporters fired up.
  19. Yes I know it was intended to be a joke. It wasn't funny. You know why? Because every person of a group that is discriminated against is a member when it is convenient and not a member when it is not (if they are able). It is the camouflage that is necessary to survival. Sometimes it can be isolating. So to use that fact to diminish ANY justified feelings directed at some ignorant clown who is speaking out of their depth isn't funny - It is the heart of racism in this country, and the ugliness that allows it to persist. I am somehow not "allowed" to be this thing that I can't escape just because I choose to hide it sometime out of necessity. It was funny to you, it was a big fuck you to me. I am not demanding anything Randy. I am telling you that you have wronged me and giving you the opportunity to act like a man and own the responsibility of your actions by making it right. I am telling you in clear and no uncertain terms what what you can do that would make me satisfied, and leaving it up to you to decide how to handle it. Right now, based on this "I don't want to be demanded" rant I would say that rating is poor. I am not expecting any "special trip", you can do it when you come to pick up your bike (when I finish putting it back together). But I am letting you know that I won't be satisfied by some half assed internet apology. I want to look into your eyes and have a conversation with you about it like men.
  20. Fuck you too Otis. It's an ethnicity not just a religion. So yeah, not one when it is convenient is usually when some white supremacist piece of shit is looking at my hook nose and trying to figure out just how "jewy" am I. Do you want to guess how often that happens? or are you content with making racist jokes just because you find them funny? You wanna drop some N-word jokes in there too while you are at it?
  21. Are you fucking serious? You do understand just because you are related to a jew by marriage that it doesn't automatically mean you are suddenly not antisemitic? Like that's not how this works, at all. It's not a goddamn hall pass. Emil Maurice was Jew who founded the SS, an early Nazi party member, and was a personal close friend of Hitler going back to 1919, by your logic Hitler isn't antisemitic because he had a close personal Jewish friend that also worked for him. Stephen Miller, who works for Trump, is Jewish and also a White Nationalist (in case you forgot it's not speculation its in his own words: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/nov/14/stephen-miller-leaked-emails-white-nationalism-trump ). This idea that jews, or friends of jews, or spouses, grandparents, can't be antisemitic is false. Again, no such thing as a hall pass. I'm sorry dude, but this it literally the dumbest shit I have seen written here. Also, do you think this guy gives a shit about his family? Dude once re-gifted a set of monogrammed towels back to the son that gave it to him without realizing it, and has made veiled suggestions he'd like to screw his daughter. I don't know what his private family home life is like, but his public one looks like he views kids as a tool to immortalize his legacy so again, just because he has Jewish grand kids doesn't grant him a hall pass. Trump traffics in stereotypes, and that doesn't exclude the Jewish people. But don't take my word for it here is a good analysis of some of the antisemitic things he has said or done by an independent centrist source: https://theweek.com/articles/835714/what-donald-trump-said-about-jews too "lefty" for you? how about the WSJ? https://www.wsj.com/articles/donald-trumps-comments-intensify-concerns-among-republican-donors-1468155601 I am just going to come out and say that you really don't understand antisemitism at fucking all. You aren't part of the tribe, you haven't been a victim of it, you have little to no experience with it and statements like the above clearly show you have no fucking clue what you are talking about. So please do us all a favor and sit down and shut the fuck up about it Signed, A jew. P.S. I am done pretending to be nice to "conservatives" willing to overlook that their party got in bed with White Supremacy, Nazi's, and other overwhelmingly obvious racists just because y'all wanted some tax breaks. Its fucking stupid, you all are complicit in this. If you aren't smart enough to figure out that being on the same side as fucking ACTUAL NAZI's is bad, you aren't the decent human beings you think you are. /rant.
  22. I've always loved the looks of these cars but heard they were maintenance nightmares, esp the non-turbo ones because of corners cut in the 3.0L engine.
  23. I assume you are looking at WK generation GC's (2005-2010), if you aren't let me know. I believe the thing that affects towing is the 4wd package. in the WK generation there were 3 4wd setups : - quadra-track I - Quadra-Track II - Quadra Drive II Quadratrack I (QT1) operates like an AWD system, RWD bias until there is slippage then it engages the front. Its only on the v6 models and it comes with open diffs and that electronic LSD where it taps the brakes of the slipping wheel. Quadratrack 2 (QT2) is a real transfer case 4wd (48/52 FR bias) with open diffs and the brake tapping LSD (BTCS). It is available on the V8 as the base 4wd system. QuadraDrive 2 Is the same as the Quadratrack 2 system but adds electronic diff lockers front and rear instead of the BTCS. This is the best system for the GC and it is only available as an option on the V8. This carries the highest tow rating. This is the one you want, even over a new WK2 (2011-present) because in the Wk2 they got rid of the front dif LSD and just had the rear. If you aren't lifting it - that front Elocker makes it super off road capable for a stock truck. Honestly, I wouldn't fuck with a non-pentastar V6 GC (3.7L) with a strangers dick and your foot on my ass pushing. It's slow, the auto trans is constantly hunting, the thing sounds like a moonshot just to get going, did I mention its slow? Now if you are considering a WK2 (the 2011-present) GC's they changed a lot and there is stuff I like and don't like. For instance the "Selec-Terrain" replaces the e-lockers with that bullshit BTCS brake traction control and then they stuff it in the "off road capable" trailhawk. ick. I do however think the selec-terrain's ability to change front rear bias (60% front for snow, 60% rear for performance, up to 100% rear for sand/mud) is neat. the Wk2 tow capability does split along v6/v8 lines with 5000lb capacity for the v6 and 7500lb for the hemi. does this help?
  24. I hate myself for suggesting this....but...4cyl YJ wrangler with a soft top. 2800lbs wet, convertible, stick. slow as poured syrup in winter.
