  1. Cool, thanks man. smile.gif I'm also going to be doing valve seals here within the next few days (whenever the parts get here) so if I can borrow that, that would be great. Don't know if I'll make it out to H00ters tonight -- I think that the girlfriend will call dibs on my evening. I should be able to tell a little bit about how much it's leaking down by just pressurizing the cylinder, rigging up a fitting with a gauge to it, and timing the pressure loss with a stopwatch. All I'm trying to do is get a general idea about how healthy the rings are. The battery is out and I have most of the wiring harness unplugged, so a conventional compression test won't work right now.
  2. Cool, yeah. Does it have a gauge on it, or a port for a gauge?
  3. Anyone got one that I could borrow for a day or so? I've already got an air compressor, so I'd just need the tool. Muchas gracias.
  4. I've been learning a little more about GM's Vortec 4200 inline six after taking a look at one on a stand at the Detroit Auto Show. These articles have some good info on it: http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/techcenter/articles/44833/article.html http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/auto_technology/2000/11/new_engines_for_2001/ DOHC, four valve, CNP, VVT (exhuast cam only) -- it's undersquare (93mm bore and 102mm stroke), which is good for torque, but bad for revs (6300rpm redline). Still it makes 270hp along with 275ftlb of torque. From the description, the main bearings are girdled. It also has a cast oil pan, and uses lost foam casting (more precise than sand casting) for all the engine castings. All in all it looks like it could be an exciting engine for the boosting crowd. smile.gif
  5. Ask Nick Turbo Prick about it. I think he mentioned that he's done some tuning on a Tec3.
  6. Do you guys actually have access to a mandrel bender, or are you just welding pre-made mandrel sections together?
  7. Where are you planning on working on it?
  8. He may not be ready to handle the power of the raging Saturn SL1. tongue.gif
  9. I will take fast and reliable. As far as modding the Accord, I'll add a few things: my college cars I left stock, due to both financial and reliability issues. Those cars needed to get me to school, home and to Spring Break without breaking. That was their sole purpose for existing in my life. I highly recommend that as a forumla. smile.gif Also, the best Honda's for performance mods are probably NOT Accords, sorry to say. Now, what you *could* do is put some nice suspension pieces under it, some good wheels and some sticky tires and have a fun handling car. It will be cheaper and give you more significant results. Otherwise, for power the best cheap thing you can do is a 50-75 shot of nitrous. If you have a five speed, it will probably shorten the life of your clutch. I have no idea what it would do to the automatics. Your best bet, if you have the time and extra money, is to buy a cheap, fast car for your speed jones. 5.0 Mustangs are a good choice -- good deals can be found on 1st gen DSMs, and the occasional beater RX-7 Turbo II manages to sneak under $2k. Also, the old turbo Mopars, like Daytonas, etc. can be found cheap and you can beat the living daylights out of them. Just my $.02 and probably worth about as much. smile.gif

Hua, you got a price on the plain old Aeromotive 1:1? Thanks.
  11. Guys, this thread is no longer technical, so I'm closing it. Sidecar, good luck to you and your co-workers at Passen. Columbus needs good shops that are stable, and good people working at them. What you learned at the sales seminar is very true, and probably 10x as true with the advent of the Internet. COLD AIR, tech policy requires your off-topic posts to be funny. You have some work to do. tongue.gif
  12. Preach on, brother. Preach on. Hua and I have been around the Supra scene for quite a while, and we know who's who. Every car that rolls out of Larry's shop is done right, and he does nothing but 2JZ-GTE work. I've personally got a number of friends with cars that have come out of Sound Perf. and I've never heard one bad word uttered about the quality of his work or the value of it. If it's not right, he will make it right. He will also make it fast. Besides, if you want a powerful auto trannied car, you will end up doing business with him sooner or later. Talk to customers, and they will tell you how it is with Sound Performance AND Passen. There is no comparison. I do all my own work, but if I didn't want to or couldn't, my decision would be a no-brainer. My Supra would be up on a trailer and headed for Chicago. smile.gif Your call. I hope everything works out for you and that we see you and your car out sometime this spring/summer. It would be sweet to see a turbo Lexus running around here.
  13. This is still being worked out. There IS a parts list, internal components are orderable from Getrag, and the manual is available outside the US. Currently, our Euro and Aussie friends are trying to acquire the manual. There's a guy out in Sacramento who will probably be among the first to do his own rebuild and share information about it. I'd expect Getrag rebuilding to be commonplace by this time next year. Sidecar: Sounds like a fun car. smile.gif Can't wait to see it. Definitely talk to Larry at Sound Performance about the tranny. He really knows all when it comes to the autos. www.sound-performance.com is his website.
  14. Aren't all SC300's autos? The one they use is very similar to the tranny that is in the NA Supra, which differs somewhat from the one in the TT: http://www.supraforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64226 and http://www.clublexus.com/forums/showthread.php?s=acfcdce3153dc32ac3c3b43bc3981939&threadid=73071 and http://www.supraforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73544&highlight=sc300+tranny It's rather hotly debated as to how strong your stock tranny is and what it will hold. One guy in the last thread has made 427 to the wheels on the stock tranny. Other guys consider a tranny swap mandatory. No stock Toyota auto tranny is going to survive much past 450-500rwhp, so if you plan on making that kind of power, definately think about an upgraded tranny. Sound Performance of Chicago makes several versions of upgraded auto trannies for the Supra if you end up needing to go that route. Toyomoto in Miami also has a shift kit that got the stock SC300 tranny into the 11's. CTC Motorsports in Texas also knows a lot about this swap. Swapping in the six speed Getrag is expensive, but they are absolutely bulletproof. Have you been to the forums at ClubLexus.com? There are some ver knowledgeable guys there who have built some sick SC300's. SupraForums also has some turbo SC300 people as well as people who have turbocharged the NA Supra. Hit the Engine and Tranny section at ClubLexus and do a search on "GTE". You'll be busy all afternoon. There is also a manual available from a guy in Hawaii who did the swap: http://www.fly-hawaii.com/lexustt/ The Lexus guys seem to recommend it highly, but it's not cheap. $200. Let me know if you need a hand sometime. Sounds like a very interesting project.
  15. The Profec B seems to be limited to around 25psi. Otherwise, it's a good, basic electronic boost controller. It does lack that pimp factor that more heavily advertised EBCs have (though it is now available in multiple colors), it's too inexpensive for most Supra owners to take seriously, and it won't do your taxes. tongue.gif graemlins/fruit.gif
  16. Yeah, I'd go with that advice. Hua will take care of you the way a paying customer ought to be. I would avoid performance shops run by Supra owners in Arizona as a general rule. They have a pretty shady track record.
  17. Yeah, that's true. An engine that has high mileage may leak oil at the gaskets or valve seals with synthetic. I run it anyway, because I like knowing that the turbo bearings aren't going to get coked up, but it leaks past my exhaust valve seals like crazy.
  18. Very good. We all need our targets.
  19. No problem. I already decided to leave him on the list in a previous post. If he asks to be removed then I'll do it, of course. Since it's not a racing list, I don't have a problem with leaving "old" dyno numbers up until he gets a new ride. On the next update, I'll go ahead and replace your old Cobra's listing with your new numbers, if that's what you want.
  20. How is the quality control for RPS clutches viewed in the 3/S world? There are some Supra owners who complain (shocking, I know ) about them, though my TRD (made by RPS and painted a different color. lol) has been wonderful. Just wondering.
  21. Slick 50 is not something that you should put in any engine, IMO. The FTC has already nailed them for bogus claims, and Dupont has stated that Teflon (PTFE) is not intended for use in an internal combustion engine. For oil, all you need is a good quality synthetic (eg: Mobil One) of the manufacturer recommended viscosity and frequent oil and filter changes.
  22. The list is now updated to include Vinny and Steve. It now takes 400whp to make the top 10, and pretty much takes 300 to make the top 20.
  23. Please do not use nuclear weapons in our forum. Thank you, - The Management
  24. If PRD desires some of our surplus funny, they may request it from us at any time and we will be glad to provide it. Our domestic funny needs are rather low. This new policy simply allows for the legal production of funny within tech, something that has not been specifically permitted in the past.
  25. There will be a rule change in tech. Contrary to popular opinion, we do have a sense of humor. It may be small and underdeveloped, like dubber's manhood, but it is there and functional. Since CR does not have an official humor section, off-topic threads that amuse the management will now be permitted to remain. The burden of the funny is on the poster, and the funny must be clever and at least remotely technical in nature. Threads not containing any discernable funny will be summarily executed. Profanity, as defined by George Carlin, will not be tolerated since it requires little creative talent. Management reserves the right to revoke this policy in the event that excessive amounts of frivolity occur.
