Really interested in what you find, especially the open source Simulink. Keep us updated and let me know if you run into any roadblocks so we can try to help. And, post up the final results once you are comfortable divulging.

I've never done it before, but one of our elec/communication gurus said to use a PIC Micro. They cost something like $10, and may have a CAN transceiver built into them. If they don't, you can add one outside of the micro for a few more dollars. Supposed to be programmable in Simulink, so crazy easy to program. I don't know the details of compiling that program to run on the PIC micro, but from the little bit of reading I've done there are open source compilers out there for the PIC Micro, so maybe one works with Simulink somehow. http://www.microchip.com/pagehandler/en-us/products/picmicrocontrollers

Doable? Yes. To me it seems like home automation is really coming into it's own. Just 2 years ago the systems were either closed, proprietary (only 1 protocol) and possible very expensive, or if the were a 'universal' solution, they were buggy. Cheap? No. Hubs are going to be $100+, usually in the high $100-$300 range. Most of these things work on their own protocol (like a frequency and language), you (typically) can't control them over wifi so they need what basically works and looks like a wifi router. Then modules (plugs, outlets, switches), are usually significantly more expensive than the non-smart versions. Iris is one of the most accessible, being sold at Lowes, and I would hope very plug and plan. Anyways, I'll use it as an example since it's very accessible since it's sold in a brick and mortar that's in pretty much every town. Hub is $99 - http://www.lowes.com/pd_388556-41166-HUB520_ Outlet is $35 - http://www.lowes.com/pd_339582-1353-45636_ Plug is $30 - http://www.lowes.com/pd_388564-41166-SPG902_ Switch is $35 - http://www.lowes.com/pd_339577-1353-45637_ I do not like that there is a monthly fee with Iris, again, I was just using it as an example. Which would get expensive really quickly if your wanting to do a whole house... or maybe expensive is a relative term. I would guess you could do a typical whole house for hundreds of dollars, at most 1-2 thousand, compared to (ten) thousands of dollars just 5-10 years ago. My plan is to piece-meal it, for cost and time of install. Do parts/areas where we would see the most use. Still researching what system I'm going to use. From what I can tell, most of the home automation solutions are as simple as wiring in a new outlet/switch/etc. and 'connecting' it to your hub (kind of like connecting a new computer to your wifi). So if you can install a light switch or outlet (which I know you can), then you're golden. No rewire needed. The communication/switch/brain for each device (outlet/switch/etc) is all built into each unit and should fit in a typical outlet/switch box.

I assume it's a hobby project and not work since your ruling MicroAutoBox out due to cost. If so (I don't want to ask you to divulge work info, mutual professional respect and all) curious about what you are doing? I assume you are trying to put some parts in a car from a slightly different variant or year and the message structure slightly changed over time/variants. I've had this idea rattling around in my head, that the automotive modification community needs this kind of solution due to the proliferation of CAN (or something simliar) communication from ECU-ECU for pretty much all info exchange. What happens if I want to put a different engine/ECU into a car. It would be great to have a CAN transceiver that can easily (from a GUI standpoint) and relatively inexpensively modify signals both ways to make the expected info on both sides correct. The only big issue I see for a hobbyist is knowing the CAN.dbc on both sides. I can tell you from experience it's a tedious PITA to reverse engineer CAN.dbc's from scratch. A solution like this might be better suited to aftermarket shops making engine swaps kits, but could still be used by a hobbyist with way too much time on their hands. Another idea flowing from the above issue, of CAN.dbc's I've had running around in my head is an 'open source' forum where you can share CAN message info that you've found to help reduce redundant work. Of course I'm not going to and can't share info about my CAN bus, and you can't about your's. But there is no reason I can see why I can't share info I've discovered about your's and you about mine. I'll ask around at work to the Elec side guys and see if they have any good ideas. I'm sure you have some people at work you can tap for info on the CAN message side, and programming side. I've never used Arduino, et al. before, but I'm sure I could help/guide you on both of those fronts if needed. Do none of your cars use CAN gateways? You could just get your guys that work in that area to properly program on of those for you? <~ Again, I don't want you to actually answer this since that's info that I don't need to and shouldn't know from you, just a rhetorical question.

Am I missing something from the article, why was he charged with second-degree murder? I want to say I'm glad everyone in the family is ok, but after that sentence, I can't really tell.

I think he was thinking a little more long term, who wants to go sometime. Shawn, let me know when and where and I'll make it if I can! Went last Sunday... I am sorely out of shape. :fa:

Not that he's put this criteria down yet, I'm interested. Can you get a recent version in a wagon in a manual (or even DCT)?
-
OP, this is about the boat I was in last year, but finally decided to go a different (cost) direction. I was looking for an 06-07 WRX Wagon, 05 Legacy GT or 06 Saab 92x. But I'm a huge fan of a hatch/wagon, AWD, manual, turbo cars. If that fit's what you might be looking for, you're pretty much limited to Subarus unless there's something I overlooked in my previous search. In general, the 06-07 WRX is going to be easier to find that the other 2. I looked at those specific years due to cost, specs (2.5L for WRX started in 06), and availability of a manual (LGT wagon of that gen only had a manual in 05). I was looking to spend 13k-15k last year. You might be in a different boat, but hopefully this could give you a starting point. Could you get into an 09 WRX wagon for that price now? I would kick myself for not getting an 11, but maybe because (I think) the 11's are sought after and 09 is 2 years older you might be able to find some 'deals'.

Is that some sort of strange cotter pin? Glad you had fun with that car, I bet they would be fun to drive!

Any base pulls? I'm curious what the AFR looks like stock.
-
I'm just basing off of all of the rumors saying about $60k. Have there been any official numbers yet?
-
I get paid straight OT. I throw all of that money into a 'fun' account, so we can spend it on whatever the fuck we want and not care one little bit. Did a calc the other day at my current rate of hours/week and current take home rate, how many years it would take. I don't work a ton of OT... I think it would take something like 9 years. http://0.tqn.com/d/webtrends/1/0/D/A/-/-/epic-rage-guy.jpg

I'm seriously running through every scenario in my head on how to (reasonably?) afford one of these, at least at some point. It's not working though. My wife needs to work in a more lucrative field. :fa:

Fat kids (with all of the associated health issues down the road) are usually a result of fat parents passing down bad eating and non-exercise habits. Your weight loss is awesome. But what I like even more is how you are now showing and teaching your kids good eating and exercise habits!

I had an early 90's SL2 (I think?), the little 4 door with the DOHC through most of college. Pretty much an indestructible car and surprisingly fun.
-
Ummm, just look at what's in the background and that will tell you exactly where it is. It's behind COSI on the other side of the river from downtown, looking across the river at downtown.

Specifically why? Just curious what's better about the car. Any drawbacks?

Like I said, I'm not a BMW guy or guru by any means so hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in with actually market conditions.

Do they really want/need an M? Seems like a lot more expense and possibly headaches when they can get a 3something vert. They would have basically, unless they are really into performance cars, the same car for less money, probably for them better ride quality, more reliable and if somethig breaks possibly cheaper to fix. I know there are exceptions but most people period, especially at 66 are going to find the NVH and ride harness of something like an M3 too much. Keep in mind I'm not a M3 guru, just thinking from a common sense standpoint. Also, 10 years old, but with 50kmi or less seems like 2 almost mutually exclusive terms. I'd guess you're going to pay through the nose, relative to the market, just to get low miles. I would think this is especially true for a car with a following like the M3. One could probably get a few years newer with a reasonably amount of miles for similar money. Again, just speaking in generalities; would love to hear if there is a specific market situation here which makes these generalities not apply. Just some numbers for food for thought; keep in mind these are all edmunds prices. 2003 M3 vert ~ 14k. I would guess high teens to 20 for one with that low miles 2003 330ci vert ~ 6k 2009 328i vert ~ 20k 2009 335i vert ~ 22k and it would probably face rape a 2003 m3 under most conditions if they are looking for performance. Again, I understand the actuall markets might be different, but I think it's a fair apples to apples compairision since all numbers are from the same source.
