  1. I have a few books in my amazon wish list I am researching like outdoor survival skills by larry dean olsen and the beginners guide to hunting deer for food by jackson landers... anyone read those?
  2. Don't I need some sort of a license? I have a shotgun and a compound bow. As I would like to eat what I kill, I would like to hunt deer I suppose. Are there any places you can go that you rent admission to some ground or something? As far as fishing if I could catch anything with a lure at a park that allows fishing that would be a big improvement.
  3. huh? I think this is an inside joke and I am on the outside ;-)
  4. Thanks for the suggestion but I don't have any friends that hunt/fish... I bought an old browning compound bow from a coworker years ago but we have sort of lost touch...
  5. Hey all, As bizarre as it may sound I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice as far as where to start, good books, etc to learn to be a better outdoorsman. To paint a picture- I grew up on a small farm with a .22 rifle and a BB gun for varmint control and plinking but that's about it... I can start a fire with kindling and tinder and dry wood most of the time but always pack the map gas torch just in case and as far as fishing if it isn't a bluegill that bites a doughball with a bobber online I am not going to catch anything... I wouldn't know where to begin as far as deboning it and cooking Oh I almost forgot! I did go pheasant hunting once but it was sort of comical to me with dogs to scare them out and six guys with shotguns shooting at the same bird or two... After I shot one I just took pictures of my other family members with my phone But I have a strong interest and as chance would have it two small boys I would like to teach better survival skills to... I was in the cub scouts/boy scouts but in my suburban troop (before we moved to what used to be "farm" country Delaware county) it was a joke. Thanks for reading
  6. I think you are referring to columbus col-weld..? There specialty is welding cracked engine blocks... I didn't know they built engines as well... If I were to have some engine work done I would call m&m head or rob lasota to see what they thought but that's just me. As far as actual experience with either, I have had Rob do some tuning and fabrication/welding work and Mike did some broken off bolts in a head for me...
  7. I can't accurately, unless you know a trick...? The boosters are in the way and there is only supposedly a 1/16" difference. At the bottom of the venturis they are all the same from 650 to 850 (if I had a baseplate, supposedly the butterflies are the same as well)... I thought I could borrow a pipette from a research lab and knew the volumes I could cc them but I would have to seal to something first (not to mention any fuel/vacuum ports) and the volume displaced by the boosters would be difficult to calculate unless I could get a spare one.
  8. I didn't know HITE did carbs... They are great for starters/solenoids/alternators.... thanks! I will check out Chris's as well thanks.. I just need someone to help me identify without list number (milled choke horn) if its a 650 or 700 double pumper. There is a guy in florida my dad goes to that says he can do it but we have to ship it down there first. Holley says now that the choke is milled its a piece of junk anyways and doesn't want to hear about it I am going to use it is a practice carb for my blowthrough modifications to see how it goes before I mess with the HP 750 that is on there now. It needs a baseplate and there is a different one for the 650 and 700. I have a 650 baseplate and metering blocks on the 750 as it was a 650 dp the previous owner converted using the holley hp main body upgrade kit.
  9. Anyone know a good carb guy around Columbus?
  10. If I were looking at the two (and I did last generation) I barely glanced at a cts-v- Now that I am now married with 2 kids and mid 30s my vette is less practical. I saw a g8 yesterday with the plates 4drvette which I thought was cool- Maybe your biological clock is ticking????? ;-) I will vote c6 z06 for you, but you are correct- the seats and steering will be better in the V than the Z...
  11. Good argument! I will be ordering more federal hst's It's bizarre but there must be anothe factor besides bullet weight and charge as all three defense rounds I shot today were 147 grains. All were standard loads not +p. The pdx1 lists 1000 fps on the box as does the federal hst, the hornady TAP lists 975. The TAP recoils a lot more than both the pdx1 and the hst. The hst recoils a slight but noticeable amount more than the pdx1? Do you think it is aerodynamics? The federal hst's feel bigger to me than the pdx1s. Maybe a tad longer?
  12. Hey all- As far as practicing for self-defense... Do you allow the trigger to return all the way so that you are always practicing first shot or do you hold it back and just let it reset and fire again for repeated shot accuracy? I am not sure I would remember to hold it back in a real situation so I felt like I was cheating but I would be a lot more effective in my defense if I could... I know I am explaining this poorly... It takes me a while to take the slack out of the trigger the first shot and is difficult to stay on target while I do it- not really realistic for a defense situation I wouldn't think... but maybe I should practice that way as I really dont want to waste the first shot...
  13. Ok I bought a box of the Federal HST 147 grain rounds. They seemed to be a nice round with less recoil than the hornady TAP (do not like that round- they do look cool though) The entire box fed without issues in my glock 19. I shot a lot of the 147 grain Winchester PDX supreme elite as well which blackwing recommended to me last time.... apparently the 40 caliber version of this is what the FBI uses. I find the recoil to be less on the PDX for second shot target acquisition. They are twice the price as the HSTs and do not expand as much but they are bonded if for whatever reason I should have to shoot through glass or drywall?? Likelihood- who knows... The accuracy between the two is about the same- which would you go for and why?>
  14. Thanks for all of the replies so far! I am glad others think the rsx-s had good steering as well- apparently it has the same steering wheel as the s2000 and is only 350 mm (13.7")- My c5z wheel is 15"
  15. Hey all- Trying to garner some information... Looking for A-F scholastic style grades... For me I give an A+ to our old 1977 Porsche 924 with a tiny momo steering wheel and an A to an 1987 911 also with a momo wheel. I give a solid B+ to a 2000 Jetta VR6 and a B to the Acura RSX-S. I give my C5 Z06 a C- and my wife's RL a C. I have also heard are nice but never driven: 1998 BMW M3, '95 Volvo 850TR
  16. c7 comes out January- It will have Direct Injection and 450 hp 450 ft-lbs of torque... also has variable displacement and will switch to a 4 cylinder off load...IIRC it is 6.2 L. New heads but still ohv. There are only two parts interchangeable with the c6- one being the targa top rear latch and I forget the other... fwiw I have 33K miles on my 03z and no rattles. My dad's 08 had an annoying squeak/rattle from day one on the removable top... a few c spring clips from a genius corvette forum member fixed that otherwise it would still be annoying to this day. My father in law had an 06 c6 with headers/catback and it vibrated/rattled so badly it was unbelievable. If I were to trade my car for anything else it would be a lotus elise- def not a c6. If I did something practical it would be an 09-now cts-v sedan, 335 twin turbo sedan BMW, or an evo as I am wanting 4 doors lately for my kids.
  17. I think the battery tender is the key- my dad also has mild 2 wild and only 5000 miles or so on his in 5 years of ownership- 08 he got in dec of 07 and knock on wood no issues yet...
  18. c5z. With the price of c6z's dropping so fast I am tempted to trade up but only for the engine...I love the true FRC design and looks and the c5 is lighter. The c6 has slightly better supportive seats but almost all of the already lacking road feel and rawness is gone.... the 08 + has a slightly better rack for steering response but I would trade that for the improved road feel of the c5. I am looking into making my own custom rack setup right now for porsche 944 level steering feel *cross fingers* Put the supercharger on if you want more power- I was going to do it myself and bought the gremlin project instead... the problem is that without a 2010 or late 2009 model c6 pcm you cant get launch control which I desperately want (racelogic box would work I think but a pita to install and def not as neat as a factory setup)... as you know all the power in the world is worthless without traction and as mine sits stock with nitto nt05s which are much stickier than supercars I am at about the limit of them... That is unless you have more balls than me and wish to drive around in the rain with drag radials or slicks... and once you do that you need a beefier rear end, transmission, bracing for both (pfadt and dte), half shafts, better clutch, etc... hence why I bought the gremlin instead... If I were you and were single with time to burn I would sign up for spring mountain driving school and do a bunch of hdpes... these cars were made for road racing not drag racing... there are still days I think about putting a blower on or an ls7 clone or both but my practical side wins over usually.
  19. Thanks man! Right now I am focused on the rear end swap but I really appreciate your offer...
