  1. The philosophy of physics is indeed to split hairs until there is nothing left This is clearly evidenced in the overwhelming majority of threads here on CR. Oh yeah, I went there.
  2. Um not a single person yet nailed the OTHER difference between hot and cold water? VAPOR PRESSURE. Given a temperature and a pressure, a given material has a prescribed rate of vaporizing (helpful hint, the rate increases as the temperature increases). This means that the hotter cup will vaporize (and in doing so give up energy) at a faster rate than the cooler cup. Of course, it also depends on the ambient temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. The other factor that you have to consider is the convection of air vs. water. Given that both cups are made of the same material, the cooler cup will cause a downward convection current in the air and an upward convection current in the water. The warmer cup will do the opposite. What you forgot to ask was: What shape are the cups! Answer that and you will be one (of many) steps close to a conclusive solution to this problem. Here's another question: Did you really mean 70c? If that's the case, and the air is relatively dry, then your two cups may be completely void of water before they both reach the same temperature.
  3. This is easily explained. Wal-mart is (or at least was) notorious for allowing returns of 360 hardware with no questions and no inspections. You probably got a RROD return from someone out of warranty that they reshelved. Why is it that someone should have to buy the 'elite' version in order to get one that isn't a piece of crap? MS had such a good thing going when they got the jump on sony, and now they are erasing all that with the ill will of pissed off RROD owners. Apparently the console wars will be waged long into the future.
  4. Speculation doesn't just "happen", there needs to be motive behind the market forces that allow it to be profitable. At the same time, it's hard to argue that the overspending by both the US gov't itself and the citizens as a whole (debt spending in particular) has put us in a position where holding the dollar is particularly appealing.
  5. And the causal effect of traders selling the USD would be... You guessed it, the government's solution to the huge budget deficit; which is to just print more money. O wait, this was a 'beating the gas discussion into the ground' thread, not 'beating the poor monetary policy of the us govt discussion into the ground' thread. I will now shut up.
  6. The government(s) need to step out of the oil loop in places like China, India, (to a lesser extent Venezuela, Saudi Arabia.) Artificially low prices there drive consumption up, making demand-priced markets like the US and EU more expensive. If the US or EU government should do anything (in my opinion), it's to offer rebates to commercial transport operators/companies in order to ease the cost that they otherwise push down to consumers due to the increased cost of doing business. The price of fuel for commuters needs to stay high until people realize how stupid it is to drive 50 miles each way to work in a vehicle that gets 20mpg, or joyride around town every night in a diesel pickup that gets 11mpg, that's the shit that needs to stop before prices will ever come down. Just sayin'
  7. Anyone seen "Thank You For Smoking"? In case this thread hasn't been derailed enough as it is, I would like to point out that the #2 number on that list is caused in large part by people who *choose* to smoke cigarettes. Now where is the harm in a little gun play, I mean it couldn't be worse than lighting up a Marlboro...
  8. I admittedly don't follow Glenn Beck that much, but I do have one question. What is his thing with Al Gore? It seems a lot like he's trying to get famous by criticizing someone who's already famous. Correct me if I'm wrong...
  9. Please (for everyone's sanity) just take the SCOTUS opinion for what it's worth and don't dig this debate up again! Kitchen by 5pm...
  10. Did anyone see the fabled 'free burrito' coupons they were supposed to give out at 8pm? I showed up at the local one at 7:55 hoping they would wrap things up and start handing out coupons (the line was wrapped around the building 1.5 times) but the coupons were a no-show. I left after 15 minutes and allegedly (hearing from someone who works there) at 8pm they put an employee in line to mark the end and they kept serving free burritos until almost 10pm just to work through who was in line as of 8.
  11. You will soon get more copies than you know what to do with, keep an eye on your GF's mail box. Long answer: The PD office on Marconi Blvd has a records office where you can get copies after they are in the system (a few days at least). Your good friends at every small-time law office in Columbus will be forwarding her a copy along with a letter about how they can get her a huge cash settlement with no money down. YMMV.
  12. In case anyone hasn't heard, here it is. Because the lines there won't be long enough without you guys, I wanted to let you all know that every central ohio Chipotle restaurant is giving away a free burrito (1 per customer) between 5pm and 8pm today. http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2008/06/25/burrito_list.html?type=rss&cat=&sid=101
  13. I defer authority to Jeremy Clarkson (despite the fact that he says it with a british accent). Murts-eh-le-aaaaahgo.
  14. There are some hilarious pics farther into the thread, but it's probably not worth the 4 hours it would take to read every page to find them. Apparently what it came back to is that the 'towing' company wasn't allowed to boot cars for not displaying a pass, but they were doing it to tons of people anyway just to make money. It sounds a lot like the organized car theft that happens here in Cols day in and day out (cough, CAMcar). Wrongly booting a car, Vandalism? Wrongly towing a car, theft? Will the law ever be on the side of the humble citizen? Discuss. Edit: here is the page with the meat of the argument on it (warning, it's 1/60th of the thread and it is still long as hell)... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3880087&page=52
  15. I stopped watching about 10 seconds in when I saw a man pushing his car down the road. Sure, he may get good gas mileage but what exactly is the point of the car? I'll pass, thanks.
  16. They announced today that among other things, about 2500 workers in Moraine, OH will be out of a job by 2010. What's sad is that they apparently have no desire to use these bodies to increase production on smaller more efficient vehicles, instead they are simply trimming the less efficient products and not looking back. What might this bode for the already fast declining US auto industry as fuel efficient imports are seeing ever-increasing demand? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/04/business/04motors.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
  17. I could code it in... *7* lines of perl! (tugs on suspenders) But seriously tho, this is something relatively trivial to implement as long as you already have a web server in place with the needed storage space. There are a number of other considerations, but anyone who puts a little thought into it can iron that out. On the other hand, to start from scratch, you are looking at a substantial investment just to get some relatively trivial functionality (fwiw, you could accomplish this with google apps in about 5 minutes).
  18. In case I am not the only one who hadn't heard of this before, there is actually a documented phenomena of this behavior: Cargo Cult THAT cracks my shit up. I can just see a bunch of natives tapping their fake headphones, sitting in their fake control tower, trying to figure out how to give a plane clearance to land...
  19. So what do you do when your security system sees a perp ransacking your office? Shout at him over the internet? Don't get me wrong, cameras are a great deterrent, but you're getting a false sense of security in thinking they totally fix the problem.

    Voter Fraud?

The culture of partisan politics places anyone who insists there was fraud into the tinfoil hat group. Hell, even The New York Times abandoned their liberal bias to avoid being labeled a conspiracy rag: It's sad that the most patriotic form of criticism (challenging a broken voting system) is forced into the nut-house. But to change this, BOTH sides would have to simultaneously dismount from their high horses and admit to impropriety. Good luck with that.
  21. It makes you wish automated lethal security systems were legal, eh? If you ask me, thieves should get one warning and then they are fair game. Hell, it's more than we do for deer and those are legal to kill (part of the year)...
  22. I was picturing something slightly different.
  23. They have turkey twizzlers in Britain? Me want.
  24. Quite true. Anyone who wishes for this is asking for a bigger problem than we already have. A basic economics class should have taught you one thing; if there's no oil surplus selling it at $3.89 a gallon, there sure as hell won't be any selling it at $1.89 a gallon. What would happen? Gas stations would sell their week's worth of gas in a day, and if you came on the wrong day you wouldn't be able to get gas. Next thing you know, the government is giving out gas coupons and you can only legally get enough gas to go 200 miles a week. But, thank God, it only costs you $35 to fill up instead of $60. Good luck visiting your family out of state!
