  1. I wonder if the stock brz/frs trans could hold the abuse, and for how long. It would be interesting to drive that car with the GT-R engine and a true manual. It'd be a cool swap in a RX-7 too.

The GTR Transmission is the main reason they work so well.

Anything, and I mean anything can make XXX whp if you throw money at it, but no automated manual trans on the street can shift as fast and consistently as a GTR trans with mega HP.

Dont get me wrong, a GTR/6 speed swap would be cool-but a GTR with a 6 speed would be marginally better than a TT 370z. AKA, lame as aids.

  2. I just asked the same question on LS1tech. I just want an inch or so drop not a Farkas. They said in that case I should be fine, H and R springs seem to be the way to go.

On your car, I think a lighter gunmetal would look good. You could also go chrome for not much more than powder coating.

You have the springs yet? Let me know how that works out.

Funny I was thinking Chrome too-since I am leaving the front grills untouched. Wish there were good aftermarket options for this lug pattern.

  3. Like the changes!

    Not to thread jack-but

I have also considered trying a different wheel color-but I think silver is best for my paint color. Am I crazy? Maybe a light gunmetal, or go ricer and try good ol' TE 37 Bronze?

Also-do you HAVE to run spacers when installing lowering springs? I have not researched the issue.

*edit* Wow, forgot how nerdy stock tips were!

How much are you wanting the tow? I know a shitload of people who pull the max 5k lbs allowed, and some in a few cases, in the RAV. I know that's not full size body on frame action but it's something. This is with the v6 4x4 like ours, though. Also, the actual Toyota trailer hitch is a much better and far different affair than any other brand you would buy, as well. Far more robust and better engineered from the looks.

The v6 Rav is on the radar- too bad they don't offer the new one in a V6

This is why. Northstar is fucking junk. 04-09 has a 3.6l V6 or a 4.6 Northstar. That V6 came in just about anything under the sun for GM, STS, Malibu, G6, G8, Torrent, etc. 10+ had a few improvements from what I read..

    Is the 3.6 DOHC/northstar based?

  5. I have a 2002 Suburban Z71 that I am about ready to trade in on another Suburban. It has been an awesome vehicle. I am just spoiled and want a newer one.

It is at the bottom of the price range you are looking at but if you would be interested I can give you the details.

How long have you owned it? Maintenance done? Any mechanical issues?

    And yes send details :)

  6. First gen QX56

I want to stay away from Nissan. I have never seen a newer model make 200k without a mass of issues.

I would not own a Trailblazer or Envoy, the I6 isn't horrible, but the things feel cheap and sloppy to drive down the road. A V8 version is a PITA to work on, and yes DOD is a bitch, causes sticking rings and oil consumption on everything with it. I would delete the DOD or AFM on any GM V8 if I bought it.

Have you owned one of these? Is the DOD issue really that bad on the V8? Does the Tahoe have the same issues?

i've seen a lot of issues with the Envoys for some reason: Air suspension bags, compressor, abs issues, stabilitrak, SAI, front suspension.. etc

I have read mixed reviews-but more leaning towards the problematic.

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer V6. Went all the way to 257k before I started having transmission issues.

Just last week a bought another 2003 Ford Explorer V6 totaled and with 100k for 1200 with tailgate damage so Im just gonna swap my good panels onto the totaled ride and go for another 150K.

Good to know. I think Ford does make a good truck-my F350 has over 200k and is problem free. No 3rd row in an explorer correct?

  7. Sell your Rav4 to A.J.'s sister http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117119 she's got money burning a hole in his pocket.

Use as down payment on newish Tahoe/burban.

I saw that. I am sending him a PM.

The Rav 4 is NICE-much nicer than previous years. Just does not fit the current need, and was a knee-jerk reaction when the wife was about to dive birth at the beginning of winter and was diving a Corolla. I dont regret it as it was amazing for her and the baby as a DD

  8. Goal-SUV that is wife friendly (see-auto, and OK if she wrecks it lol). She has a 14 Rav 4, but will start baby sitting and may need a 3RD row

Budget-8 to 10k. 15+ if it makes sense.

Most important to me-reliability. I should not expect to replace an engine/trans at 200k with proper maintenance. Buying Cash, want to keep it for 5+years. Minimum total investment. I would also like for it to be able to tow small boats and cars without worry. My F-350 is just not Family Friendly.

    Need-

    4wd

    3rd row

    Resale

I6. Reliable? Can it tow? T case issues?

V8-are the issues with DOD that serious?

Anyone know when they started to have remote start?

    Hyundai Santa Fe 07 up

    Girl friendlly. Do-dads

    Nice interior

    Is it realllly reliable?

Basically Tow at your own risk it seems

    Cadillac SRX 04 up

Rommy- GM price point with better fit and finish

Can park next to my Caddy-get same color for maximum gay

    V6 ONLY?!?!? Reliable?

    Towing capacity?

    again-remote start in what year?

    Toyota Rav 4 (09-12 with 3rd row)

    RELIABLE

    3rd row

    No towing

    Explorer 04 up

    Better Interior. Limited 3rd Low?

    Reliable?

    Worth mentioning

Toyota 4runner/Highlander-EXPENSIVE. Not known for towing-less interior room for the $$$

Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade-She thinks its too big. Worth talking her into one? Why?

    Expedition/Navigator-you tell me.

Please give any and all opinions on the matter so I can have Jordan @ JET find me the car!:lolguy:

  9. I chickened out on the motor mounts and had IPS do them. I did the differential bushing myself and it is not bad, especially if you rent the tool that creative steel offers (I would not want to try to sawzall that bushing out of the aluminum carrier. Both made huge improvements in the car's overall feel but I didn't notice any difference in wheel hop though, in theory, the diff bushing should help some.

Yeah, I did the mounts myself. What a pain!

Mallett motorsports used to sell an anti-hop kit that worked great! It was pretty simple too. I think I will be getting in touch with him to see how he did it. Think similar to a traction bar set up on a FWD car.

  10. Props to even offering this Doc! You are one of the few collectors I respect. USE the cars, and let other people enjoy your collection!

If the Bentley can take a baby seat-I'd be your huckleberry :)

  11. This. I installed a wood furnace years ago when I bought my house and never looked back. Downside is cutting wood every year but look at it as getting exercise! It has definitely saved me HUNDREDS of dollars each month in winter time since my electric furnace doesn't ever kick on when the wood furnace is roaring. Everybody should look into it if you have access to good hard wood trees and don't mind putting in the work to save during the winter months.

I think taking the chain saw out and going to town is fun! Especially when its snow covered- take the chain saw, a thermos of hot chocolate, and a long sled and you feel like you’re in the middle of Appalachia auditioning for Mountain Men. That+an HF log splitter and your good to go.

I have gas-a newer "high efficiency" home, and I have a fire almost every night. I don’t have a wood burner, just actual fire places. My home also would not work well for a wood burner do to the extreme ceiling height in the great room and living room.

A friend with a wood burner uses it exclusively in the winter. He has a smaller ranch, but its stays HOT-we actually usually have to open windows to cool it down!

If I havd a large detached garage, I would get a wood burner for sure. I would say if you had to buy wood (unless you can get it in bulk for cheap) the wood burner would get expensive in a hurry.
