Jesus man way to rain on everyone's parade. As for Vegas-esque, I dont know if you've been to the former Argosy in Indiana (now called Hollywood Casino) but its fairly nice and big. Of course nothing like Vegas but who are we kidding right? As for what they will be like, when putting together the proposal for Issue 3 the propositioned where the new casinos will be in each city so Im sure they have blueprints on what it will look like. From what I understand it will be just west of the arena district, so that would be on the other side of Huntington ballpark correct? I think it'll be great for our local economy adding jobs not to mention hotel space and the tourist attraction of a casino in a 'touristy' area. People coming from out of town to catch a jackets game, maybe a clippers game in the summer can now have the option to stay and spend money. If you think the people of Ohio and Columbus particularly are going to gamble their way into better days, you may as well cough up your savings now as that's not likely. The only ones going to benefit from the casinos are the state via taxes and the owners via profits. Our city can't support the retail it has let alone adding in another form of entertainment that sucks money out of the patrons going there. Not in todays economy especially. Sorry, but I'm not jumping for joy to have a bunch of $7/hr jobs created nor see another avenue for people to piss away money they don't have. I think it's pretty clear that we in the US don't do shit to actually create anything anymore. All we are is an economy of consumers and spenders. True story, I used to work at the Hyatt Regency here in Columbus. One night one of the maids, one from an eastern Africa country that barely spoken English, found a room covered in plastic tarping and a patron that had capped himself in the bean. He covered everything, including the walls, with the plastic. It was a mess, but easy to clean up thanks to him. No we cant support the retail we have.... Casinos give people a reason to come here and help us out. Rather than sitting in their hotel room complaining about how the cities here are lame (which is what everybody always tells me when they visit) people are more likely to go out. Hopefully that will spread the money around to the random places they see while out. It could suck the money away from them but I hope note. I say hope because at this point nobody knows, we are just assuming. I dont think anyone really expects it to put money in their own pockets.. I'm not a big gambler, but it will open up some interesting bars and entertainment...and it will give me a place to smoke indoors where i dont have to freeze my nips off (atleast thats how other casinos are). I think that people with addictive personalities are already doing a fine job of mis-managing their money. Adding a more convenient outlet for it may not help them, but I don't feel like casinos are going to turn us all into a city of gambling addict zombies (any more than we may already be). Will there be some bad side effects? Probably. I'll take the bad with the good because I think its going to do us more good than harm.
