Okay, so if I'm narrowing it down to the S5 and the BMW 335xi, then I'm wondering:

-Is the S5 AWD?

-What does a used S5 (say, 2007 on) cost?

-What are the maintenance fees typically associated with both?

I know the Mercedes hasn't exactly been cheap to maintain. I'd figure the Audi and the BMW are probably in the same ballpark?

From what I have learned, Audi's are engineering clusterfucks if something goes wrong. BMW's will nail you with expensive "inspections" at certain intervals. Get a Hyundai and call it a day.

Pros: It's the fuckin' Batmobile.

Cons: Get the fuck out of here. You're asking me about cons? It's the fuckin' Batmobile, there are no cons.

Jones.. why are they badged/ called a 3.0t with a supercharger? you shoulda seen me popping the hood on a 2010 s4 and i couldnt find a turbo anywhere, only to notice a hidden extra pulley atop the motor.

Just their new way of doing things, turbo or supercharger, gets a T. Fun cars!

S5 is indeed AWD.

S5 = Naturally aspirated V8

335 = Twin Turbo I6 with notorious fuel pump problems, among other things.

I <3 the n54, but the S5 would win in the category of most likely to be reliable.

If you want to easily make more power, then you have no choice but to suck it up and get the 335, or wait for the 2012 S5 with the 3.0t.

335xi vs. S5 is a tough one. Can't really go wrong with either.

I think the interior is better on the S5 AND think the normally aspirated V8 would be a more solid choice for reliability than the TT inline 6. The 335's have all proven there's issues with fuel pumps, not a matter of if, just when it decides to go out and despite the fact that they make a solid product the reliability of the turbo setup on the BMW is uncharted territory since they haven't done a turbo gas car in quite some time.

However. if I were comparing the S5 to anything it'd be the M3 not the 335. M3 isn't AWD though but out performs the S5 in nearly every aspect and would be my personal choice over both the 335 and S5.

Then there's the E class benz. Our E55 has actually been suprisingly reliable. One air shock and a heater control valve have been the only issues in 2 years of ownership (car has just over 40k miles now). Some have had nightmares with the E55's reliability though. Plus they only made our supercharged version until '06 so finding a nice one is much more difficult. ''06 + The E63 is n/a and lacks the torque but makes up with more top end pull and no headaches from the supercharger. Still the same little gremlins and nightmare repair costs if something goes wrong. I think MB is the most expensive car to maintain on the market. The worst part about the E class is despite it's great power and luxury accomodations they just drive like crap. Feels like you're driving the fastest land barge in the world. Great if you want to sit back and relax and just go for a ride, horrible if you actually wanted to enjoy the driving aspect of being behind the wheel. But for 20+ miles per year maybe that's what you'd want.

You hinted at it back a few posts...but what about a 997 C4S? AWD, coupe, entertaining to drive, suprising reliability, etc. The worst issues for the 911 is the potential for a leaky rear main seal. It's been a porsche issue since the inception of the M96 block in 1998. Some leak, some don't. Most leak a touch and never get repaired. Car runs off of timing chains and gears so internally they're basically maintenance free. Oil and filter changes and plugs at 60k miles and that's about it. There's even a suprising amount of cargo space in the front trunk area. You're not gonna load a flat screen in there or anything but we could get a full load of groceries in ours no problems. If you find a factory aero kit car they are dead sexy too!!!

Sounds like - based on the feedback thus far - the V8 Audi will be easier to maintain than the TT BMW? Bonus points for that.

Jones - I'm planning on leaving it completely stock, no mods whatsoever. So I'm not so much concerned about modability.

Ben - good point on seeing more BMWs versus Audis, and that matters to me with respect to this car.

Andy - great write up: thanks for taking the time to do that.

Price comparison: Audi vs BMW vs Porsche vs Benz? And which is most worth the money?

At this point, for me, it's going Audi > BMW (but just slightly) > Porsche > Benz.

If, however, there's too much price difference, then that could affect ratings.

Also, Putty, the GTR is somewhere on my list, though I'm thinking it will be in the mix come next spring when I start thinking about "fun" cars (e.g., Z06 vs GTR).

one of my partners has a v8 s5. the car turns a lot of heads, and sounds fantastic. its awd and he plans on driving it all winter up here in wisconsin. even the spare wheels with the snow tires look good. smoked him in my stock GTO though. still, a great looking car with good fit/finish/styling. good choice if you're going to leave it stock, as there's not much to do with performance mods

Another thing to look at is how well the AWD works in its intended weather. My father has a X5 sport package or whatever ( step underneath the X5M). and with the way it comes its horrid in snow and some heavy rain. Now I dont know how the Audis are but from the pictures at the LEAST you will have to get a set of aftermarket or stock wheels ( if they fit over the brakes like the X5 is having issues) just to drive in the winter.

Other than that I vote the BMW just because I only like Ferrari powered Audis that I can never afford. I love my Dads X5 but not his 650i, BMWs are a crap shoot on if its going to be a good one or a shiat one.
