We take shitloads of drives all over the place. We've found so many cool, little places. Many arent' worth driving out to see exclusively, but the drive itself around east and southeast Ohio is almost always enjoyable.

I've decided to list this one since I haven't seen it within any of the posts here, yet.

Serpent Mound

We just went down a few weekends ago and camped at the state park near there, Rock Fork Lake I think. Then went to the serpent mound on our way 'back'.

We also took a detour on the way back; came across 32 and up 23. Stopped in Chillicompton at an amazing little dinner called Granny's on Bridge.

A good time was had by all.

Oh just thought of some more places to eat at...

Rudy's in Springfield (right off 70). Its a BBQ place and is amazing. I ate there prob 2-3 times a week when painting the ANG out there.

Eddie George's (on high st), good food, reasonable pricing and pretty cool place overall.

Nicks Pizza (In Utica right on Main St), they have the best stromboli I have ate. Just be careful they are open funky hours, might wanna call ahead before going.

Newport is really cool. The aquarium is nice and takes an hour or two to walk thru, longer with a child. If you go to Newport go to Hafbrauhaus. Fucking. Mind blowing. My fave restaurant evar.

I saw this post last week after talking to Chris (Kickass) about his trip to the real Hofbrauhaus and said to the wife "Fuck it, let's go this weekend". We drove down on Saturday and had dinner there and it was a great time. It's a really neat atmosphere and they had live music and pretty good beer. It was neat to see the traditionally dressed band with traditional instruments break into "Don't stop believing" by Journey. The food was great also. I actually ate sauerkraut and I usually hate the stuff.

We checked out Newport Aquarium also. It was pretty neat, but not my favorite. We also hung out at the mall and found it to be really similar to Polaris/Easton, but there was plenty to do.

tl;dr - Newport is definitely worth considering if you haven't been, especially for the Hofbrauhaus (and maybe Montgomery Inn, though i don;t get the hype).

+1 for Hocking Hills. Lots to do around there.

We went to Ash cave and old man's cave. The Zip line is really fun I would definitely try to do that.

Also, it might be a little cheesy, but I thought Serpent mound was really cool.

Cedar Point is always fun if you haven't done that recently.

Out towards Bellefontaine there are two old castles (I forget the names) that offer tours. And it's a cool area to cruise around. The highest elevation in Ohio is over there and if you go downtown they have the oldest concrete street. HA!

Went to Nelsonville for the train ride yesterday. It was a good time for sure, I recomend it to others for sure. The ride last a little over 2hrs and includes a stop at a village set up much like Roscoe Village. They have actors dressed up in 1800 attire, a blacksmith and general store. The general store sold the best Root Beer I have ever drink. It was so good that I am now wishing I had brought a few bottles home. That is saying a lot considering I am usually not a fan of pop to begin with. The only negative thing I could say towards the train ride is the scenery. You really don't get to see a whole lot of the hills or anything, you do get to see a lot of rundown houses though. Its kind of an eye opener just how poor towns and people are in Ohio. The residents at the homes appeared to be very friendly though, they just waved and waved as the train passed by. How they live in a house that is 10ft away from train tracks is beyond me, the noise would annoy the piss out of me.

They have several carts in which you can ride in. The paticular one we rode in had open sides which made the expierence much more enjoyable.

I give this trip a 8/9 out of 10. Not bad for $16 a piece (kids under 2 were free), we had 50 bucks in the entire day, that included 2 train passes, lunch at subway (God I love the rewards card) and a souvenier patch for our son (he has a blanket that my grandma is making him with patches of all the places he has been).

1. I thought this sign was pretty cool

7. A view of the hills along the trip

8. They stop at a place called Robins Crossing which is pretty much like Roscoe Village. They have actors potrying 1800 living, a black smith and a store that sold the best rootbeer I have ever drink. My son liked it so much that he stole the bottle from me

9. My son was a little tired of riding on the train so decided to give my shoulders a shot

Well went to Amish Country and honestly I feel a little let down. The food was amazing and the scenery along the drive to and from was nice as well. Outside of that I wasn't overly impressed. We ate at Der Dutchmen in Berlin which was really good. After that we went to the Flea Market which was way over priced on everything!!! Once we left there we decided to go check out the Cheese Factory and was let down. The area where you purchase food at was tiny and over crowded. My friend who is the cheese fanatic was in heaven though haha. On the way home we stopped at a farm/petting zoo and let my son (16months old) play with some animals and he had a good time doing that so it made my day. They had the biggest horse in Holmes County named Big Ben. Let me tell you his name definitley fit his ass, good lord he was massive. The strangest thing I saw the entire time was goats on a roof lol. They had a rampway that led the goats from the ground up to the roof, then from the ground to the roof was a rope that acted as a conveyor (spell check) belt, you filled ice cream cones up with feed and sent it up to the roof for the goats to eat.

I would give the whole trip a 6 out of 10, the saving grace was the food and smile on my kids face while feeding the goats. I would go back again if I had nothing else better to do, simply for the before mentioned food haha. There are a lot of little towns up there, most of which we didn't get a chance to go to. From what I have heard they are nicer, as many people feel Berlin is too comercialized these days.

Anyways here are some pics:

3. Did you notice the sign in the picture above? Well here is the really big horse!!:

I think we have more pictures, not sure will have to ask the other 4 people that went with me.

This upcoming weekend we are going to Mansfield with some family to let our son and cousins ride the Carosuel that they have right in downton. It is .75 cents per ride, and even less if you buy multiple rides. After that we are going to Johnny Biggs to eat (see my any food challenges/montrosities thread). Sunday its off to Hocking Hills with my mom and step dad to explore. This will be the first time I have ever been to Old Mans Cave/Ash Cave ect. Will report back next Monday!

Put-in-Bay, Cedar Point, Hocking Hills, Zoar and or Roscoe Villages, a Buckeye football game, the Air Force Museum, a concert at Blossom Music Center, Goodguys Nationals...those are the best of Ohio IMHO. Those are the most unique. I grew up around the Amish and spent a lot of time in Amish country so it doesn't have the same charm for me as it does for most.

There are a surprising amount good wineries around lake Erie, hitting all the islands, renting a condo or cabin on the lake, charter fishing, and rock and roll hall of fame.

Apperantly there is an Invention hall of fame in Akron? never been though. make mafia connections,......., and profit.

Columbus Museum of Art, the Wexner Center, short north gallery hop, ohio NFL teams game, MLB is all but over with. If you havent been to a clippers game in the new stadium that's a must. Planks on parsons is a must. Ohio Theatre shows, Columbus symphony, the thirsty ear for some jazz flute action. Ohio st v Univ of Mich hockey game is fun. Bench clearing brawls ensue as its the last game of the year. I think there is a girl roller derby somewhere in Columbus too. Whats that old fashon farm life on 23 south...the kid would like that. Circleville pumpkin festival. Ohio historical society i guess?

I know hocking hills was mentioned but find a babysitter for the weekend, rent an A frame in the near fall future and make sweet sweet love all night long. And i guess your wife could come too.

toledo....well, they have tony paco's and a good walleye run in the early spring. Good place to get cheap crack and buy houses for $1.

Not sure if me continuously posting pics in this thread is going to be an issue or not. If so let me know and i'll remake a thread in the pic section.

The journey continues, this time stopping in Mansfield and then Ontario. We went to Mansfield to The Richland Park Carosuel located right in downtown mansfield (corner of 4th and Main). The Carosuel is inside of a building, which was nice given todays rainy weather. They had a gift shop in which we stopped and picked up a patch for our son ($2.50). We had a friend of ours with us as well who was originally only going for the 2nd part of the trip, but ended up enjoying the carosuel.

Tickets were .75 individually, or you could buy more and save a little money. We bought 9 for 5.75 (saved .25 lol). Kids under 2 ride for free!! The carosuel ride lasted atleast 3minutes per ride and was suprisingly pretty quick moving. There wasn't a whole lot of people there so it was get on, get off, get back on. Total ammount spent: $8.25!!

I would give the carosuel a 9/10 rating. It made me feel like a 5 year old kid again and my son absolutely loved it.

Now on to stop #2 for today. After riding the carosuel we was all hungry and had already decided to head up to Ontario (roughly 10mins away) and stop at Johnny Biggs. Now this was the first time any of us had ever ate there, but I was aware of a little thing they call The Bigg Boss Challenge. Let me tell you, it definitley lived up to its name. Four 1/2lb pattys, lettuce, tomator, pickle, onion, oh yeah 2 grilled cheese sandwhiches tossed in there and 1lb of fries make up the challenge. The best part, you have 20minute in which you can do it. Game on, or so I thought haha. I attempted the challenge in which only 6 people have ever finished. Unfortunately I was not number 7 lol. I did pretty well though, I had 1 patty and a handful of fries left after 20minutes, for that I got a t-shirt. Unfortunately I had to pay $25 for my meal since I failed...oh well atleast I tried. Before attempting the challenge the manager brought out a waiver that I had to sign, stating that I would not sue them should I have a heart attack after trying this, that was comforting haha.

Today we ventured down to Hocking Hills, mainly Old Mans Cave and Ash Cave to check out the secenery. If you have never been there then you are missing out. I give this a 10 out of 10 just becasue of the pure beauty that nature has produced. I seriously wanted to take pictures of everything. The trails are easy to walk, the park is very clean (few assholes left trash behind) and the drive there from Columbus is just a little bit over an hr. On the way back we stoped at Ye Old Dutchmen for some lunch, let me tell you it was amazing. If you don't know what it is, it's an Amish buffet. After 2 plates I was stuffed, we stopped in their gift shop and picked something out for our son as well. After that we was heading up 33 and stopped at a flea market, it was pretty cool actually. There was so much old nostalgia that I really have no need for, but wanted it all haha.

Again I highly reccomend this and give it a 10/10. Next week is the Columbus Zoo and Black Hand Gorge or Dawes Arboretum. For now here's some pics from Old Mans Cave

They say if you have seen 1 zoo, you have seen em all. I tend to agree with that haha, Sunday we made our trip to the 3rd different zoo that we have visited this year. This time it was the Columbus Zoo and we had a couple friends and their baby tagging along with us. I am gonna assume more everyone reading this has been to the Columbus Zoo, if you haven't well then you should go check it out. While they have essentially the same exact animals as every other zoo across America, its close to home and cheap fun for people of all ages.

The park is pretty good size and took us nearly 4hrs to walk all the way through. The park is set up to exhibit the different continents. The coolest one in my opinion is Africa due to the Gorillas, followed closely by Austrailia and North America. The aquarium is also a favorite of mine at the zoo.

The only thing that really sucked about this visit was all the rude people that were also visiting. People would stand in front of the animals forever before moving on, pushing was common as was people just cutting in front of you like you weren't even there. If you can get past that, then you are good to go. One of the coolest things this paticular day was a female Orangutan that grew fond of our son. You will see in the pics lol.

Anyways here are some random pics....stay tuned as this upcoming weekend we are off to the Pigeon Roost Pumpkin Patch on Route 40 near National Trails.

Has anybody on here thought of starting up a game of tag. Where someone would start out posting a pic of their ride in front of a Ohio landmark along with a few clues as to where it is if it is not obvious in the pic then whoever the first person to post a pic of their ride in front of that same landmark is now "it". They now have to find a new landmark and take a pic of their ride in front of it to post as the next tag.

A motorcycle forum I'm on has done a pretty good job with this and some folks have found some really interesting places. I figured there are more than a few like minded folks on here that just like to get out and explore their state no matter what they are driving.

Just an idea. I can post a link to the forum thread if you like so you can get a feel for it.

While thats a good idea, I just don't see many posters on here going along with it. With a motorcycle forum its a little easier, as every bike rider I know has been all over the place on their motorcycle. Its a little cheaper on gas to go jump on the bike and venture 200 miles away.
