I did a thing as well ... X3M40i

I'm relocating to Detroit area while my wife still works in Columbus, I needed a SUV to drive back and forth. Sucks the road to Michigan don't have highways, slow on plowing all the way till Toledo.

Couldn't justify keeping my M4 which will be sitting in the garage, double expense on housing and what not so I sold the M4 and Acura(to my co-worker who really needed reliable DD),

Initially was ready to sign on a XC60 T6, very comfortable, pretty quick(320hp ish), tech features what not, I couldn't give up some of the performance criteria since I've mostly owned performance oriented cars.

So the new 2020 X3M40 now rated 382hp (355hp until 2019 models), 370tq, 0-60 around low 4 second, bangs and pops out of exhaust(lol) still offering 27 mpg highway, new I-drive7, tech features, All scheduled Maintenance included until return, I picked this one up the other day.

Called/ emailed about 50 dealers around midwest to hack a lease deal and get somewhat closer to what the East coast brokers were getting, finally 1 dealer agreed not marking up the base MF (money factor), and do a descent discount rate.

Considering it's brand spanking new 2020 with 6mi on the clock and higher MSRP option'd car, I did pretty good on this lease hack deal. Most dealers including 2 locals were trying to mark up MF with minimal discount rate, tried to have me put money down, when I proposed my deal most of them literally said F off and go find other dealer since most people will buy at their proposal not even knowing what MF, MSD, RV, trunk cash for the month are.

$65,000 MSRP car, $55,250 sales price, $0 Down pay towards sales price, only tax, Acquisition fee + Max MSD(Multiple Security Deposits which will be fully refunded at the end) to even lower the Base MF rate, I agreed on $5xx/mo. which if you convert it, it would take about 9 years to reach MSRP of the car with my payment. Oh still getting Post rebate from BMW as well. so all in all my cost of ownership of this new car for 3years was low $20k, and exceed break-even point for Residual after 36month if bought instead of lease. So technically, I can still turn around and sell it, possible to make extra cash out of this lease.

It pulls hard for being a 4300lb car, new B58 engines feels strong, definitely quicker than my wife's Porsche Macan S.

On to the shitty pics (Dirty from driving past week)

Looks nice for the weekend commute. I'm surprised they haven't updated the X3 to the latest driver assist package, but the ACC is really nice on a long drive like that.

Where in the Detroit area?

I don't know which features are the latest, but I don't use those much anyway.

This particular one has Auto parking assist, lane keep, front crash assist, speed limit signs and what not which I still had those from M4.

Volvo had way more assistant package though. I figure they are all about "Safety first"

New LCD screen dash, touch ID7 and HUD screens are awesome, we can get all the info with pictures graphic on HUD as well.

motion gesture works very goofy which I don't like, most of other functions are very similar to older version. I believe they might do full change 2021 since 2018 is the 1st facelifted full change they made.

I will be working in Livonia at Hankook Tire. on to the house hunting now around Novi, Farmington, Northville area.

Beautiful. I’ve been eye fucking these for a little while now.

Just to clarify- you leased it? How many miles per year? I drive 25-30k miles a year in my car and another 6-7k in my truck. So leases are out for me (truck is a lease).

Yes, I leased it. I didn't want to buy a used car this time, and If I get a hacking lease deal on a new one, I would rather lease since I don't keep my cars for long so better off leasing if I can get the right deal.

With my full MSD getting back and lower payment due to discount and all the incentives, it past beyond break-even point for my cost of ownership for 36month vs depreciation and residual value after 36 mo.

I'm doing 12k/yr because weekend driving back and forth will only last for few month(not every weekend) until my wife finds a new job and considering daily commute isn't much in Detroit(15mile round max). I should be able to meet 36000mile mark. If not I can always buyout few more miles so I didn't go with 15k to begin with.

in Cbus though my daily commute was around 60miles or so leasing was out of option. Why don't you buy a truck and drive 25k 30k a year then lease a BMW?

After few rounds of lease (probably BMW just for the incentive and loyalty sake and BMW usually lease better than other Germans), We are going to get rid of my wife's Porsche, lease a BMW family car and I'm thinking of getting an M5, or 911(used if she lets me) myself.

Looked hard at these as they are very nice. Needed more room so the wife ended up with a X5 50i. Really quick for the size of it though. Once we are done with the X5 it would be hard to pass this up or get the M50i X5.

I compared X5 as well. I liked the exterior and interior much much better than the X3, It was just way too big for my body size and no kids to haul.

If we decide to have kids, I might have my wife get rid of the Porsche and get the X5.

^^ nope..not true. I can help walk you through the calculations. In the end leases aren't limited in miles as you can pre-buy them cheap. Vehicles depreciate the same regardless of how you pay for them.

^^ good move. You have pretty much the same deal I have on my RedSport. $65k car for mid $500's. General rule of thumb is anything 1.00 to 1.05% of MSRP is a great deal. That's the main reason I ended up with my Car....the price was $250-$300mo lower than what I could get a similar German brand for at the time. Ironically, I bought mine in Dec. too. Great month to make deals.

Yup, "general" rule of thumb is about under 1% without putting equity towards the sales price. you are correct, most German makers don't favor you for leasing except BMWs are little easier to tackle down (mostly their Demos and Loaners).

I did mine the night before Thanksgiving, (actually past their normal operation hours) I go back to Korea in few days, and the base Money Factor and Residual Value change all over again each month so I had to pull the trigger.

If I had more time to negotiate (above deal was a half day work among ~50 dealers in Midwest) I would do it in December, I'm sure I could have shaved a bit more of the meat left on the bone, but the dealer was quick, transparent, not marking-up the MF like others, and waited me until after hours so I'm totally happy.

Now, I need you to do your magic this coming spring after Detroit winter..

Nice whip. How long will you guys be working/living 5 hours apart?

I am in Detroit every 2-3 weeks for work and I dont even like the 2 hour all-highway drive. Cant imagine 2 hours of side streets before I hit a highway.

If you go from Columbus it's US-23 up to I-75 at Findley. North-ish of Delaware there are no more traffic lights.

The driver assist packages are going to be tuned similarly (due to some of them being regulated), but the 3, 5, and X5/X7 have the latest hardware and more steering support (which would be nice on the drive to Columbus and back).

I'm on the other side of the city from you, so you'll have it a little easier going up 275 than 75 through Detroit.

Possibly 3-6month is our prediction.

It already sucked going back and forth few times to go look at apartments and what not

So is it better off taking 23 all the way to findlay instead of 33 past marysville and 31 and all the bs farm land?

That upgraded B58 is nice. Its super rowdy in the 3er. And they sound so good straight piped.

I didn’t think myself daily driving an suv, but wife’s macan and this new B58 made me flip the thought.

Kind of feels like driving a boat thats very fast or airplane taking off.. (coming from M4, really feels like sitting very high)

150% yes.... as long as you aren't going through 23&270 area during rush hour, especially Friday rush hour. I haven't frequently been that way during that time since they redid everything up there so maybe it's relatively OK now?

I'll take the BS on 23 until you get past Delaware to not have to deal with 2 lane busy country basically the whole way. Once you get past somewhere around Delaware, the speed limit bumps up to something around freeway speeds. And you have 2 lanes each way so you can actually pass someone instead of getting stuck behind a line of 15 trucks on 31.

Really, what do you have to lose with trying it once to see which way works better for you? It sounds like you're going to have plenty of opportunities to drive that way over the next few months.

It sounds like a nice car, congrats. It really seems amazing what some makers are doing to limit how much you might have to compromise in each segment.

Depends on how far north west you are of 270, but generally yes.

I lived off Bethel Rd not far from 315 and found it best to take either 315N (through Powell) to 23N or 315N->270E->23N, depending on traffic.

With the reconfigured 270/23 interchange and the bypass tunnel I've just been sticking to that with no problems.

I live in Marysville right off 31 and it is much faster for me to go up 31 through Kenton. I take this route often for work I seem to be able to get up north faster, but that all depends on where you are leaving from

Hey Taylor, it's been a long time since we ran into each other.

I live around tuttle crossing so might be faster taking that route. I just don't like single lane farm land area. Everytime I take that route, I get stuck behind trucks or sometimes Amish wagon.

This is my drive every morning and this is the best way to get north of Columbus. Sometimes 315 backs up because semis detour on it from some reason, but 23 always bottlenecks at Lazelle and is usually slow up to Orange Road.

Yes it has! Glad to hear things are going good for you! Man, the good ole days at Sterling Place seem so long ago.

If you do get behind a slow driver there is always room to pass. I use to take 23 N when I lived in Delaware but 31N just seems faster. Less highway patrol as well. Try both out since you will be doing it frequent.
