i think the jalopy will make a fine trailer hauler

believe it or not, U-Haul in Cleveland Heights did a fantastic job and a quick turn around (1.5 hrs)

now i just have a find a cheap, light, but solid trailer. i wonder if it can handle two bikes? lol

a quick release setup wouldve been pimpin but UHaul is not known for their clean custom installs lol

it is pretty discrete though. i'm keeping this car til it or I die, so i'm not worried.

I think it would be fine on either trans in these cars, the thing I would be careful with is keep an ear on the rear end. Well if its an 03/04 these cars are notorious for rear end issues. Luckily mine has been solid

That's really the overall concern I have. We have an 07 and I would never consider it for towing. We have the 6spd and while I think it would be the best bet as the Autos aren't like a truck with a torque converter, the rear ends are performance oriented and not intended to be pulled on...

It'll probably be fine, but in the end, a small truck or full framed car would be a better choice...

Dude, relax. I get it already... Jesus.

Just putting out some things to consider that maybe he didn't. I have essentially the same car and think it is somewhat concerning. If you think the differentials are cheap, you don't know much about these cars...

In any case, I also stated he will probably be fine. I suspect he's got a small open trailer that will haul one bike. Seen many a car hauling such a setup. However, was just speaking out loud.

I'll stop and let you tell us how much money supposedly I have and how baller I am looking down on the little people. For Christ's sake...:rolleyes:

Sorry, man. I took the big rig and pinstripes as slams making me sound as if I was hollier than everyone... I was just looking out for possible down the road issues. Sorry. I was a little edgey earlier.

i expected some raised eye brows cause the car is not exactly your traditional towing mobile.

it's an 05 6MT with 80K+ miles on it, so it's not the shiny pretty toy it used to be for me. It's more of a daily beater that just happens to run really well, so i haven't bothered to replace it yet. I'll probably keep it til it dies, but if it were to die prematurely, i won't shed too many tears. that isn't to say i don't love it cause i do... it's a fantastic, decently performing reliable car. it also doesn't look half bad.

but ya, i won't be pulling too much with it... i'm trying to stay around a 300lb trailer with 1 bike and some crap in the back seat (leathers, boots, helmet, etc). I've spoken with a few towing specialists, and they took a look around and thought I should be ok if i don't go over 1000lbs regularly (I should be under 700lbs for the most part if i find the right trailer). The g35 forum has a bit of info, but amongst the people that are towing bikes with theirs, the consensus was that it's served them well for occasional duty.

i do appreciate the concern though, but i have done a bit of reading and inquiring and it sounds like i should be ok. also, i am a cheap fuck so this has to work lol. brian, are you on g35driver? i know bad234545745235 was and one or two other guys here, but that was about it.

Probably not an issue on a performance car like the G35, but most cars are capable of towing plenty - it's STOPPING it that they struggle with.

I was looking at small SUV's, and most could pull 1500 lbs with the base 4 cylinder, and more like 2000-2500 with the turbo or V6 ...but only if the trailer had its own brakes. Otherwise 1500 lbs was still the max towing capacity.

Nah it'll be fine. I towed a single bike on a utility trailer up to Mid Ohio many many times with an '05 Chevy Cavalier.. no prob at all. Loaded up it was <800lbs total. It was a pretty nice setup but I got a Chevy Equinox last year which has space for actual people inside.

Tractor Supply has some nice utility trailers for reasonable prices that are fairly rugged; their 4x7 fits one bike perfect for $500 and a 5x10 fits two just fine for a little more. I've seen quite a few of both at the track.

i've got a lead on a 5x8 trailer some guy bought from tractor supply with wood decking installed already (and wiring and etc etc). the only worry i have is, the wheels are 13"... not sure if that will be good enough for a long haul on the highway. the longest i'd attempt is to like grattan or gingerman which is about 5~6 hrs away.

i'm getting mixed replies. some say you should have at min 14~15" wheels for long distance highway, and some say 13" will be just fine. either way, i'll get spares and fix a flats and etc.

most hauls will be less than 2 hours long on way, so hopefully, it wont be a worry.

12" wheels are fine; you can go 75MPH all day long and they won't even get warm. 13" is good too since you may be able to get a radial tire which would be a little more gentle going over bumps. The loads we're working with are too small to really have any impact on tire choice but I wouldn't get something with 8" wheels that would spin at 6000rpm on the highway.

My 5x10 has 15" wheels which is the largest for most trailers with a 3500lb axle and they're way overkill for hauling two bikes. They also have to be balanced otherwise you'll be limited to 62MPH on the highway as I found out on a 4hr trip to Putnam last year. I don't have to carry a spare though as the one from my suv fits the trailer perfectly since it has the same bolt pattern and overall diameter.

I've got 12" radials on my small trailer. You can find them used if you look around. They still make them new, but you have to order them at the placed I checked. I got used ones that still had 75% tread mounted for $40.

it's a 4x8, has 12" wheels which are smaller than what I wanted, but after reading up online for a couple hours, it seems like they'll be alright, especially for shorter trips to nelson's, beaverun, and mid ohio. should be able to carry 2 bikes if necessary.

i was pretty surprised by how easy it was to tilt and move the trailer by the ball receiver.

Does it have radials? If not, I'd start looking now as the cheap bias plys will wear out fast at highway speeds.
