cOoTeR
A friend of mine is planning on buying an 04 r6 on Monday and asked if I would look it over for him. I know the normal things to look for. I was wondering if these bikes have any model specific issues to look out for.
MidgetTodd
Typically when looking at an R6 the main thing I would look for is a 600rr .
natedogg624
ask if the coils have been replaced. there was a service bulletin out on them, i know it was for the second gen but not sure the full details of it.

shadyone
I think the 04 still had some shift dog issues. Second gear specifically also had some electrical issues.
natedogg624
shift dogs were first gen only. actually the fix for this shifting issue was to install second gen gears

donkason
If you are not a grease monkey and don't want to disassemble the crankcase in front of the seller I would look at general maintenance issues. The bike is the bike from the factory but if the owner is into his ride he'll normally be aware of, and likely fix, factory shortcomings. 1. What does the oil look like and does he DIY, have service logs, type of oil, etc.2. Is the chain too tight, loose, worn3. Is there a blistering chicken strip4. Is there moisture around the fork seals5. What type of coolant does he use to swap and is there tap water in it6. What type of brake fluid did he swap to and the intervals7. Look at the owners manual and see if it has dirt on the edges of the page from actually being usedJust talk to the guy about the bike. It will come out in conversation if he thinks running wal-mart dino oil is just as good as amsoil and he changed it every 5k and that brake fluid swap yearly is all hype cuz if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you get that jazz I'd pass. Buying a used sportbike is like marrying a hooker, they may be hot but watch for the clap son. I run my bike hard but if you ask me any of those questions I could recite with confidence and hand you my maintenance log.Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk

cOoTeR
Typically when looking at an R6 the main thing I would look for is a 600rr .Normally yes but 1. He's a fat guy and I don't wanna subject a good rr to that. More importantly 2. at least its not a gsxr.
RSparky
Let it get 200 degrees, put it in first and watch the idle. If it starts to dip erratically, it's the tps. I just cleaned mine so crossing my fingers. It's a 2 gen thing too.

BMMW
As with any bike, if its a dirty mess, and the seller "wont budge on price" walk away.P.S. The "Angry Lil R6" is nothing to be messed with. Beware!
