Congrats! You are moving to a wonderful part of the country. I'll be back in Columbis tomorrow and can answer any questions you have on sleds and the UP. I've been deeply tied to both for the past 44 years.2 points

Weather looks so perfect, route looks nice, list of names look classy, it's not even Friday and I am getting the "giggitty" feeling. So much for trying to 'not ride'.2 points

Slow week at work, so I took my youngest son on a surprise camping trip, including a ferry boat ride.2 points

I have a Lazarus complex I guess... I'm good at resurrecting old bikes. What good is a talent if you don't use it? Just won an eBay auction on a tank that's less beat up than the one I have and is claimed to not have rust inside. 30 fucking dollars plus shipping. Once I locate a right side cover I'll send them off to be painted some cool custom color....maybe color change? Maybe pearl blue, maybe ghost flames...maybe all 3....maybe plasti-dip the fucker....1 point

Not huge. Next up, draconian 55 mph speed limits on nice twisty roads. Start the petition, call your representative FFS.1 point

If you gent's had any class at all you would be meeting at the Chapman's Coffee House, 68 1/2 West Main Street, New Concord, OH 43762. a block away from the fuel mart behind the Johnny Glen museum. I am sure the euro trash bike riders would get there early to sip a Chai latte or some other ass pounding creme drink. Any hooo, I will try to find you wherever, fall in line and behave as old people do.1 point

I like Strava for keeping track of my rides and comparing how I have done. Its humbling to compare yourself to others on popular trails though I use a garmin edge 25. Very small, easy to use and easy to mount to your bike. Plus it displays any ride info you might want and phone notifications without exposing your phone more than necessary or draining battery. However the phone app work also. I use the Forte BMX style pedals from Performance bike. A BMX style flat pedal with pins is much nicer than the bear trap style and plastic pedals should just be thrown in the trash. I don't trust myself off road with clipless but they are much more efficient.1 point

Sometimes, if I work my 40 in the first 2 or 3 days I can take later in the week off. Wasn't the case this week though, I was just giving Doc a hard time.1 point

I use Strava ( free app ) and plan to fit my ram mount and x-grip, but for now just toss my phone in my pocket. Strava tracks speed, elevation, route, and a ton of other features too....good enough for me1 point

Fuel Mart is my vote, for the following reasons. 1. Tradition. That is where we always meet, don't move my cheese please. 2. Giant snak and beverage selection. 3. @Killer_kaw lives next door and often walks over to chat. In fact that is how we met him and he came to hang out here. 4. Plenty of parking along the wall. We had 10+ bikes there last week. 5. It isn't a shithole.1 point

I think people who pay $100 for flat pedals are burning money... Get some cheap aluminum flats on Amazon. Yeah, the bearings will wear out more quickly than a more expensive set, but you should be LUCKY to put that many miles on a bike without other components failing first. anything with adjustable pins, and a dedicated set of skate or riding shoes will work well. My clipless pedals are around $50, and my shoes/cleats were $120 at my LBS (a lot cheaper online).1 point

damn I should have went with come chrome polish my wheels and exhaust since I've got everything for that1 point

Got my new bars on at least. It's a drastic difference! I was expecting it to be a little more subtle. Everything clears, except the brake line hits a little at full lock. Still need to drill holes for the electrical stuff...and put a grip on...and adapt the bar ends. Sanded the chrome to match the bike better. How's it look? This is for @Isaac's Papa my #1 fan!1 point

Keep an eye on your starter solenoid as well. If you don't mind straying from stock options, el-cheapo shorty exhausts sound pretty decent and you shouldn't need to retune, since that exhaust collector pretty much does all the hard work. While you're fixing the fuel system, don't forget about the reserve tank under the seat.1 point

Buy a Yamaha and thank me later. Every brand has well performing sleds, but think of Polaris, Ski Doo, and Arctic Cat like you do European motorcycles... fast, great performance, and shitty reliability. When Suzuki made Arctic Cats engines they were much better with reliability, not the case now. Polaris was decent until the engine manufacturing went to Mexico. Ski Doo is the better of the three in my experience, but things have changed over the years.1 point

Guess I didn't realize this.... Cherohala Skyway - The road gets its name from the Nation Forest it climbs through - in NC it's the Nantahala Forest, in TN it's the Cherokee Forest. Combining the two names resulted in "Cherohala". Because the road climbs to and follows along the highest ridges it's a bonafide skyway with views that stretch for 50 miles. Now you know.1 point

Join the CAMBA facebook groups. there is an "open" group and a "closed" group. If you say you want an entry level hardtail, you'll get plenty of options in your budget. I also feel like people in CAMBA are slightly less likely to sell you junk than a random on CL, since they can't remain anonymous as easily. I am all in for a group ride, but unlike @CBBaron I will be attempting to set the world on fire on a rigid fat bike, tackling the chunk All joking aside though, $500-$600 should get you a bike that's perfectly adequate for 90% of the local terrain. Almost every time I ride, someone comments on how slow my bike will climb, or how much I'll have to brake before ___________ section. The people making those comments have never passed me or caught up to make a second comment. That's not to say I haven't been absolutely humiliated by 50 yr old dudes with beer guts who have better leg strength and endurance, but they're not fast because they have nicer bikes, they have nicer bikes because they're fast enough to rationalize them.1 point
