Sure the 529 has tax advantages, but we're talking capital gains tax (15% on earnings) not income tax. I'm pretty certain, with wide open investment choices my earnings will be more than 15% higher than the limited choices in a 529. ex. If the 529 returned 9%, I would just have to earn 10.35% (9 * 1.15=10.35) in a standard investment account to offset the tax advantage of the 529. If I do nothing more than pick mutual funds rated 4 or 5 star by Morningstar, it's easy to find funds that have returned over 20% for the last 3 years. If Obama blows up the capital gains tax that could change. YMMV.

I certainly appreciate the spirit of your post, but also find it a bit concerning. While I agree that protective gear could ultimately increase up time in the kitchen, a trip to the pony would require precious time away from the kitchen. I hope that time is being accounted for. Perhaps some pre-made meals are in order to reduce the impact of any time away.

9% over the last 3 years market rebound is not very good.

I would suggest something that you can easily add a red dot scope. A .22 pistol with a red dot is a must have I am partial to the S&W 22a. Mine has fired something like 15k-20k rounds. It's silly accurate and will feed just about anything.

My accountant tried to steer me away from the 529. All the money is assumed available for college and will probably prevent any chance of getting any financial aid.

Handling wise the SV1k and VFR800 are pretty close. I would give the reliability edge to the VFR (just slightly), but the maintenance is going to be more expensive on the Honda. Even though the SV650 and SV1k are about the same size the SV1k just feels like a bigger bike. Hard to describe without riding them back to back. The 1000 motor is obviously stronger. Both can hustle through the corners quickly, the 650 just does it with a little less effort. All 3 are good bikes with performance limits beyond the ability of most riders.

This. When I started doing group rides, this was the best part of it. I would pick the 'fast guys' brains at every gas stop to figure out how they could carry all that corner speed and make it look easy. Free lessons When you're riding with others with more skill or experience take advantage of it. Ask questions. Everyone is there because they like to ride and most are happy to talk about it.

Personally, I won't touch anything without a crystal clear title anymore. I went through it once for a nice one of a kind bike. Finally got it titled, but it was a PITA. There are plenty bikes for sale with clean titles.

I doubt those police will have jobs much longer. $800k of the Villages $1MM budget comes from their speed trap. If they can't keep the ticket revenue, they can't pay the police (who do little more than sit in the speed trap and write tickets).
