Well, either the evidence supports the charge or the authorities caved to pressure... Still don't know enough myself to say much about it.

from the terminal: sudo apt-get install --reinstall simple-scan [enter] or just go into the Package Manager GUI app, search for simple-scan, and select it, choose reinstall. (not in front of my laptop, and am a command-line guy, so I don't recall exactly how the GUI works...)

try these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/printing/C/scanning.html if it's a USB scanner, it may be as easy as unplugging from and re-plugging it into your computer.

I am withholding judgement, as I was not there and know only what I've heard/seen via various media outlets. I will allow the local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to conduct their investigation, and will go from there.
