  1. I have a 4.5 gal aux tank on my FJR that was created by one of our forum members. It gives me 11.1 gallons total and a comfortable 450 mile range, but I've gone as far as 490 between fuelings. I found a cheap bag on eBay and cut the bottom out of it so it slips right over the tank and makes it look like just another piece of luggage. I did this in June in 7 1/2 days, collecting Tour of Honor photos. The extra range allows me to concentrate on things other than fuel. Now that I have this kind of range, I never want to go back to gassing up 4 or 5 times a day during a long ride.
  2. Rode down to Iron Pony today, ran into Connie14, had a big brain fart then went home. At least the weather was awesome.
  3. Heated grips and vest, standard windscreen. No need to be uncomfortable.
  4. Rode up to Waterford, Mi today to jump through some hoops for a contract gig I'm doing - 180ish miles, 38 degrees of awesome. I'm planning on riding down to the Pony tomorrow to pick up a new front tire, it might rain a bit.
  5. You should always have a project in the garage...it gives you an excuse to "get away" for a bit. I shop CL often.
  6. Rode to work today, then took the long way home. Rode yesterday and the day before and I'll ride to work tomorrow at o-dark-thirty for my Scottsdale trip. Last week I participated in a motorcycle scavenger hunt between work days. I ride every day there isn't snow or ice on the road.
  7. Got mine yesterday, but work dictates that I won't really be able to test them for a couple weeks. I tried them on and they fit comfortably. The padding is thin, but you still get a little of that "load in your pants" feeling, but not as much as many other bicycle shorts I've tried. I'll see how they do after some seat time.
  8. Thanks, I'll try these. I currently wear the LDcomfort ones, which work well, but these look a bit better.
  9. Sorry about your dog, man. We hug ours every day, did the one before her too. The day I had to put our last one down was just as hard as any family member that's passed on. They're every bit part of the family.
  10. Since I started wearing a hi-vis jacket, I've had two truck drivers walk over at gas stops and tell me how much easier it is to see me from their perspective in the truck. That's all the verification I need, but I've also noticed that I have fewer cages pull out in front of me or cut me off. Just one data point for ya.
  11. My slime compressor and plug kit stays under my seat. Came in damn handy once in Savannah. Finished class, back to hotel to jump on the mighty FJR and head north towards a weekend in the mountains...only to find the rear tire totally flat. Pulled offending nail, plugged tire, applied pump - on my way in 15 minutes. Could have ruined the whole day.
  12. If increasing rebound dampening doesn't help, I bet your sag/ride height is too high, meaning you don't have enough rebound travel left in your forks. I wouldn't slow my rebound damping down too much, you'll have trouble keeping the tire stuck to the ground coming off bumps.
  13. All the anecdotal evidence I've seen through the years over on the FJRforum indicates the IBA to be really reasonable when it comes to certifying SS1000s. Provide them with the proof you have and I bet all will be fine. I bet your hotel receipt will work along with the witness you used at the check in desk.
  14. Home. Fargo - Toledo, 955 miles (i took a longer route to avoid Chicago) in 14:45. Thanks again Jim for putting this all together! I had a blast. You guys have a safe ride home tomorrow.
  15. Out of curiosity, what time are you planning KSU tomorrow?
  16. Broke off from the group today to collect a couple states I didn't have yet. Rained most of the day, but not hard until 30 miles west of Fargo. Head down, plow through it...at the hotel. Good day. Here's my spotwalla link: https://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=a2205397efa0bfd46
  17. So much for not doing big maintenance right before a trip. I had one stuck piston on my left front brake caliper, so I overhauled both sides. Not bad wear for 64k miles...except that one on the lower right. I'll bleed them in the morning and go for a nice ride to make sure everything's good. Packing will be the last check on my list, then I'm all set. See you all Thursday morning.
  18. In the garage I put the bike in neutral, most other places I leave it in gear. It depends on the situation. Sometimes I start the bike while off the bike and gearing up, sometimes while I'm on it, putting on my gloves. It depends on the situation. I've fueled while sitting on the bike, but most of the time I do it off the bike because I need to "fold" the tank bag out of the way. Again, it depends on the situation. Sometimes I take my helmet off while having sex, sometimes I leave it on. It depends on the situation...
  19. That's cool, I didn't even know they had an entry, let alone a very respectable finish.
  20. Did a warm up ride this weekend. Left Saturday morning and stopped in Marquette for the night. Sunday brought 45 degree temps and fog for my departure, but I managed to finish my Michigan Tour of Honor...should get second place (finally). 1300 miles between the two days, easy riding. 36 degree temperature spread in one day and dodged a few furry critters in the fog. I'm ready.
  21. Nice find! I might get this just to use in the car.
  22. Man, I can't wait till the 12th! After 9 cities in 7 counties, I'm finally home tomorrow...haven't seen my bike in 11 days. I have a 1000 mile ride this weekend, then going to change the oil and rebuild the front brake calipers on the FJR. I'm looking forward to riding with you guys and going "out west"!
