  1. Regardless of whether the headunit worked, or I went aftermarket with the source...I would be upgrading speakers regardless. I will need to buy the speakers as I don't have them yet.* I was very impressed by how well both my '78 Lincoln and my current '01 Silverado sounded when I installed better quality (and newer) aftermarket speakers in the factory locations, but still wired to the stock headunits. Great, crisp sound and decent output considering the power. *I was at Wal*Mart on Bethel/Sawmill the other day getting some items, when I noticed they redid their automotive section and got rid of nearly all their speakers and aftermarket head units. I wouldn't have bought speakers there, but it tells you something about automotive ICE options when WalMart is getting out of the game. I guess they still sell online, doe...so makes sense that you'd free up shelf space for consumable products that sell and will get restocked quicker than some cheap DIN stereo nobody buys anymore.
  2. They don't do car stereos either. I actually pulled the top off, and did a big NOPE. There were multiple circuit boards on top of each other, and they were not wanting to be seperated. I was actually quite impressed with how well it was laid out and put together. Clearly, they were stuffing as much current radio tech into a 1.5 DIN stereo size as they could for the 1970s! At this point, I'm just going to put the head unit back in, and get a Bluetooth amp to play Spotify/SiriusXM (90% of my in-car entertainment, anyway) through the factory speaker locations. Thanks, everyone!
  3. I saw that on FB. Glad everyone’s OK. Trippy to see that happen to your own house. That video you posted was bananas. Had a *small* fire in 2013 and got a TON of insurance work done to the interior of my home for smoke remediation. Again, most important thing is everyone was safe but it’s impressive how Insurance doesn’t fuck around with fire/smoke damage.
  4. I'd take you up on that offer! Although this beast with Bluetooth-connectivity, doe...:megusta: https://www.amazon.com/Lanzar-Amplifier-Bridgeable-Electronics-Bluetooth/dp/B07KMFJ5C2/ref=sr_1_19?keywords=bluetooth+car+amplifier&qid=1560869395&s=gateway&sr=8-19
  5. Thanks, Shaun - I forgot to mention that Audio Wright was $99/hr with a $75 service charge. So minimum - even if they don't fix it - would be out nearly $100. I'm leaning towards just doing a Bluetooth amplifier and splicing into the factory speaker harness. However, since I have the stereo out, I may take it apart to see if there's anything visibly amiss. It's definitely old-school enough where there are access panels for bulb servicing.
  6. So, I finally pulled the headunit out of the Lincoln and met Mike at Audio Wright. Very nice guy, but unfortunately he couldn’t help. Not sure where to go locally; may have to find someone outside of the area....
  7. You’re welcome, Doc. Thanks for everything you’ve done for CR and many of us individually! You’re doing what many of us won’t. Have a wonderful time and share some of the sights and experiences!
  8. I have to slide out sideways to get in and out, especially with the body opening...not fat-guy friendly, doe...
  9. Kerry knows his jeeps, I do value your opinions! I’m going to text the owner to see if he’s thought anymore about selling it. Good call from everyone on the value not being a lot...there’s just not much to work with here. also to add, there’s not much room between the steering wheel and the not-very-adjustable drivers seat.
  10. ryan is a very generous guy with his time and resources. He gave me some scrap plate steel I still use as a footer for jack stands and material for projects. He also gave me some TIG welding gloves... the softest work gloves I’ve ever had. +10 for Ryan!
  11. http://gmauthority.com/blog/2019/02/6-6l-v8-l8t-gm-engine-specs-released/ I will give props to Chevy for the new 6.6L L8T gas engine...401/464, aluminum heads, 10.8:1 compression. Sounds stout!
  12. HURR DURR It's like a cheap Russian/Asian car brochure from the '90s, with the horrible scaled and shaded Photoshop. Really, the whole thing is turrible.
  13. Thanks for the feedback, guys! FWIW, we exchanged contact info but he hasn't responded if he's interested in selling. Might be awhile on this. I hear ya...but from my searching, I'd be lucky to find a $4k TJ that's not riddled with rust and has 150k+ miles on it. I am ALWAYS interested when someone through CC&C or my friends/family in UA come to me with an "off-the-market" car they don't know what to do with. That's how I got my '01 Silverado! I'm not even in the Jeep market as I've got 4 cars, but if it's got a great story and I can buy for less than market value, I'm definitely down to buy. An excerpt from one of my favorite videos: Chris Harris captures the joy of motoring in old junk so well!
  14. So a friend of mine that I've helped work on his '86 CJ-7 let me know that he has a neighbor who owns a 1973 CJ-5. He's had it for 20 years, stored mostly in a rental-house garage he owns near campus. With himself being an empty-nester, he's thinking about selling as he never drives it anymore I'm curious what CR bros in the off-roading space think of the value... - 2 owner, 46k original miles. Owner is either son or knows original owner. - Originally family farm jeep, has some dents and scratches but clearly parked inside: Some rust but very few holes. Floorboards will need replaced. Frame rusty in spots but currently solid. - Old-school Warn winch, cast-aluminum finned housing. Selectro locking hubs. Leaf springs sagging but newer tires, drum brake rebuilds and shocks. - 232 (3.8L) straight-6, 3speed manual. Runs well but carb coughs when warmed up. Lots of leaks in drivetrain but in good running condition. - Front seats only. No carpet, no top, no doors, no radio. Heater does not work. Wiring is good and all lights work. Speedo works but Fuel and coolant temp gauges are inop. - Many newer parts over the last 5 years, but barely a couple thousand miles since then. He has two sons, but both are in their 20s and living in apartments...owner knows they won't be able to store/use this without it getting destroyed by the weather. I love the story behind this little runner and my kids went out of their minds when they saw it. I'd love to buy it, throw a rear seat in it, keep it in the garage or carport and shoot around town in it on nice days, but admittedly I need another car project like I need a hole in the head. Would be cool to fold the windshield down and go get some ice cream with the kiddos! I spent about an hour around it and driving it, and really fell in love with how scrappy it felt. Reminded me of my old Suzuki Samurai... In UA, it's difficult to grade value for something like this because it's very patina'd to the point of car guys thinking it's cool, but it lacks any sort of comforts that a wife would want. I told him I consider it to be similar to a road-worthy golf cart, and it'd be worth about $4k. Even if I didn't buy it, the owner was happy that I'd try to find a buyer. He's still thinking about whether he keeps it or not...but I'm hoping to hear from him before 4th of July if he wants to sell. He really has no idea what to price it at as everything online is usually shiny/restored or has a lot more amenities. TL;DR - Any ideas what a banged-up early CJ-5 is worth in very-close-to-original condition?
  15. Now you can tell people you've got an OEM Z06 timing chain and oil pump! :gabe:
  16. Not my car, but I've been doing work for friends. Was up until 2am swapping the door hinges on a '79 El Camino. The door went from bending-the-door-handle stuck and almost impossible to open...to a two-finger lift and an easy close. Amazing how much that fixes things! Had to pull the fender...wow, GM really hid all the fasteners on a G-Body. I used the 7mm, 10mm, 11mm, 13mm, 15mm, 16mm, and 17mm sockets Up next will be the steelies and new tires once Noebull's got them mounted!
  17. I should've clarified the balancing requirements (nothing special), but I was surprised how sure they were that they would have to use clamp weights. However, Noebull Automotive has the wheels/tires and will use clamps on the inside bead and sticker weights as far forward on the inner barrel as needed to balance it. Keep the smoothie faces of the wheels smoothie, indeed. $20 a wheel. That works!
  18. I thought it was wierd that they said it as well. $19.99 a wheel is more my speed though... I may be using the improper term...I just mean balancing with sticker weights instead of clamp-on. I will call Mr. Tire tomorrow to clarify. He said he’s super swamped at the moment...
  19. I have 15x8 smoothies for a friend's '79 El Camino, and some 245-60-15 tires that need mounted. My go-to Mr. Tire on Reed Road is now saying they can only do clamp weights? They did my Lincoln with stick-on weights. Anyway... Tire Discounters want's $49.99 to static balance and include an alignment. Fuck that noise...this is a basic cruiser El Camino...alignment can happen later. Wheel Medic was suggested...anyone else (preferably on the west side) that does static tire balancing for cheap? Thanks!
  20. https://jackbaruth.com/?p=15934#more-15934 Great article on poseurs. Well done.
  21. Was just about to say I got a nice flask years ago, unfortunately lost it during the move back from FL back in 2008. Now that I'm into bourbon, I wish I had it on more occasions than I care to admit.
  22. I'm a huge proponent of minivans for people/stuff carrying. There really is no better vehicle to own and operate for that duty. However, having been to CO annually (mostly trips to Breckenridge), I will say that good tires and 4WD is very helpful. It's not necessarily the trip you're planning that you need it; it's the fact that - especially in winter - your RETURN may turn treacherous with snow/ice. Normal elevations when the road is dry or a little wet can turn impassable.
  23. Denver has 330 days a year of sunshine... If you’re going to go “midsize” (because even then they are friggin’ huge), I would go with a Gladiator so you can get a bed, removable hardtop, stick shift, and still have a great interior. Plus, you’ll be able to sell it if need be and enjoy strong resale value.
  24. At this late hour...just finished a 5-hour U-joint R&R on the driveshaft of my Lincoln. What apparently was supposed to fit the rear joint by the driveshaft was .06mm too large. Gaddamn Amazon and their faulty MOOG recommendations! Ended up cleaning out two of the old joint's caps, re-packing them with the new needle bearings and grease, and bolting it together. I'm jamming to Yacht Rock and Cory Wong, so the time flew by. Still...I love wrenching in the evenings with this awesome weather. The mosquitoes are out, doe. By the way, guys...CHOCK YOUR WHEELS. With the driveshaft disconnected, I lowered the car off the jackstands to adjust them and it suddenly rolled back onto the chocks. If I didn't have something blocking the rear wheels, the Lincoln could've rolled backwards into my truck or possibly onto me if the jacks shift. Safety first!
