Helmutt
I agree with the SV650 or Ninja650 for a good starter. Seems the 250's just become lackluster rapidly once the fundamentals are in place. A 650 twin is pretty forgiving for new riders to learn on, yet a fun and capable bike to keep for years. Remember, It's not WHAT you ride....it's HOW you ride.
Pokey
Listen to the collective, you need to be smart young Padawan. Do not give in to the dark side of too much bike for you. Edited August 8, 2013 by Pokey

8Rider6
My typical recommendation for a first bike:Suzuki Bandit 600Suzuki GS500Suzuki SV650Kawasaki Ninja 500/ EX500A handful of the 250's available (I didn't start on a 250, and personally I think a 250's a little anemic if you're going to ever be on the freeway)Hondas new CB500f & NC700x
silentcropduster
someone (if their brave enough) should let him ride their 1000 around the block - (if he makes it back) - I bet he would change his mind. If he doesn't: in before OP is the newest fallen rider thread
turnone
Of course the person makes all the difference. Some can be responsible on big power but most new riders can't so we generally are going to say start small and learn a lot. As the saying goes, better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. Ninja 250 and trade up after a full season will probably be a smart move for most.

max power
Your biggest hurdle is being 5'5". Find something you can flatfoot on and go from there. Even if it's a cruiser. *shudder*
