A couple things you might want to consider...the later dates allow more time to clear the roads of salt,sand and cinders.

If you're going East of I-77 fracking is keeping a lot of those roads pretty dirty.

So far, May 16th is winning the race.  The historical average

low and high for that date is 49°F and 72ºF.

I had a stomach ache for at least 1/2 the ride down, so it could had been more enjoyable lol. Still a great day overall for sure. I just need to remember to put my sweatshirt back on for the ride back. That was chilly.

The fog last spring was somewhat scary paired with being on an unfamiliar road, a foggy visor, chilly hands, etc... it was nerve-racking. I did enjoy the day but it was brutally long for me last spring and I didn't even join in the group ride... I chalk it up as I just don't live in a convenient location and may participate in the future but it would be nice to do something slightly closer to home. Just my 2 cents.

Yea, definitely needed to be geared for the beginning.  Fortunately for you, it looks like the ride is going to meet in Zanesville this year (if the poll continues on it's current path) so that'll be a much easier ride there for you.   

And in Ohio, I don't look at weather historical averages, nothing is average about Ohio weather.  When it's May 14, maybe I'll take the temps to be a bit more accurate, sure as hell not looking at anything in February hah.

If you ride very much at all then good riding gear is an investment in safety and comfort. Do yourself a favor.

When someone starts talking about average temperatures in Ohio it reminds me of that you can stand with one foot in a bucket of hot coals & one foot in a bucket of liquid nitrogen & on average feel pretty good.

Today's average high in CBus is 44 degrees. Accounting for windchill factor, we are closer to -44 degrees.

Moving the ride closer would make my decision to go a little easier. And aside from wearing dedicated riding/overpants I'm not sure what was wrong with my gear... I had a few layers on under my jacket & jeans.

You were fine. I dressed the same as you. My jeans dried by the time we got to the meet point in BFE. Jmo. Would it be safer with over pants or later pants... Sure. But I had thermals and probably just as warm as those not electrified by heated gear.

The only problem with the length of the ride is that it's probably the first long ride of the session for most people. By the end of the season, I was riding farther with out issue.

Wareproof gear or liner is best in cold. The cold creeps in without it. I rode 250+ miles 1/1/15 no electric gear. Technical Monsoon jacket, AGV Telluride pants with rain liner in. Never got cold 26° when I left the house.
