Best way to clean up oil?

Simple green attacks aluminum and can be hard on some finishes.  If motor is painted I would stay away from brake clean.  Simple dish soap is mild and will clean as good as any bike specific cleaner.  If you want to buy something S100 or Bike Brite work great.

Started it with the oil fill plug off?

Actually took it for a ride. Pulled over and shoved paper towel in the hole once I realized what was going on. Didn't get too low on oil but it made a mess.

Not a fan of bike bright as it is harsh on plastic and will leave stains if you don't wash it off quickly.  I just use dish soap and it works fine.  Keep in mind whatever you use will take the wax/polish off so you will need to redetail everything you clean.

Operator error!

all kidding aside, Ray is correct that the bike specific cleaners including Simple Green can stain black plastic.  Simple Green will attack aluminum and damage the surface in a very short time.

It is always best to spray water on the area to be cleaned fist then apply cleaner of choice and start scrubbing right away.  This allows some dilution and eliminates spotting in most cases.  ALWAYS clean small areas at a time and rinse immediately.
