Do you have to have insurance on a boat?

No. Not in the state of Ohio. But, you do need to have coverage on your trailer.

 

When my boat was stock, with an agreed value of 10k, collision, liability, theft, etc, full coverage all around was under $20 a month.

But boat insurance isn't all that expensive. I have full coverage on my boat, gear, and trailer, with the minimum deductable State Farm allows for boats, and it's $200/year.

Half mil liability on my boat was only $6 a year. To many people are sue happy these days, CYA.

I owned a boat for years. Forget what the law is!!! Boats are a liability & expensive just like a car. You want to carry insurance. Cover your passengers, cover the boat. People drown (its expensive). Run over a tree trunk & tear up the bottom & your prop - its expensive. Insurance is cheap & well worth paying them the premiums - I know from experience -
