I actually just told my oldest its time to find work(hes 15). He says no way I laughed. My oldest is into shoes. Dont ask me why but he has amassed a collection of 20+ mint condition shoes that apparantly cannot be worn for more than a day at a time. He has asked for a bunch more but I dont see it happening. At this point they want very expensive items that I just cant see me getting them. At the limit we set and what they want it equals to around 2 presents a piece and I just cant do it. 6 presents under a tree just would seem like a crappy christmas.

Buy one nice gift so they are happy, and then spend the other half or more on stuff they NEED or would enjoy (slightly?) I always got new clothes, even things like socks and T-shirts are good filler items, its stuff they need. Then my parents always had one WOW gift.

Something else thats kind of fun that you could start is "look a likes" get them all the same gift, something that anyone could like, etc. Some of my look a likes have ranged from ridiculously loud toy gatling guns when we where 5 and 9, to HDTV's, to a bag of cheesesticks (Yes i had a christmas present in the freezer), and last year we got a box of cat litter.

Some years they are really epic presents other years they are just great laughs, either way I always remember christmas's because of our Look a likes.

My wife always says I spoiled the kids. Christmas was the one time of the year my parents actually would show us they had money. I always try to mimick the wow factor I had on christmas morning and with the things that are out there today being so small and so expensive it gets harder each year.

You're all being far too responsible. Get your son what he really wants this Christmas (age 5 and older):

Mine came yesterday. I've already accidentally set two things on fire. I'm lucky I don't have any pets, or they'd be dead by now. I'll be blind before the end of the week. I think I need supervision.
