V8 Beast
What do you guys/gals/undecided gender people usually do with your laptops when you get them to make them "better"? What manufacturers to you trust and keep going back to?
Not Brian
extra RAM and some Type-R stickers
TTQ B4U
Load it up with Memory and keep the bullshit off. No games or anything on my stuff. Download all porn and software, hacks, etc from a completely separate PC and don't do it with anything else running on the network. I've never had a problem doing it this way. If my download computer get's a virus, I flip off the wifi switch and wipe it.
acklac7
What do you guys/gals/undecided gender people usually do with your laptops when you get them to make them "better"? What manufacturers to you trust and keep going back to? Do some research on Windows Tweaks (I use Black Vipers) http://www.blackviper.com/2010/12/17/black-vipers-windows-7-service-pack-1-service-configurations/. Unfortunately you can't overclock most lappy's but I use D3DOveridder (comes bundled with rivatuner - http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=163) to help "tune" windows such that my browser/media players open with more allocated resources (makes them run faster). +1 on a separate computer for downloads/vids/hacks etc. Only problem now is most hackers are "crypting" (encrypting) there viruses such that they get by most any AV on the market - so yea, there's really no easy way to know if your computer is infected. A unidentified virus running on your network is bad bad news. Also browse with Firefox + the No-Script add-on, probably the best defense against viruses you can get and it's free. jeffro
uninstall EVERYTHING. i cant stand how manufacturers put so much bs software on it before they sell it.
JaSSon
Uninstall bloatware, upgrade to faster ram (at least 4 gb), upgrade to 7200rpm HDD or SSD.
justinwebb
I kill and disable every process running that I can, blackviper is the best at figuring them out. Got my win 7 setup to use less than 600mb of ram with everything loaded by killing all unneeded processes
Richard Cranium
Solid state drives are amazing if you can fit one in your budget. I upgraded an old laptop a while back with one. Boot time in the single digit seconds and added battery life since they have no moving parts. RAM is also a must.
acklac7
And another thing, DISABLE ALL REMOTE CONNECTION SERVICES! (Blackviper has them listed) If you could see first hand what people are doing with RAT'S (remote access Trojans) you'd likely shit your pants. iwashmycar
I tend to appreciate my HP laptop. Has never really let me down, and is only just starting to show it's age compared to my new desktop. I need to crack into it and add RAM, as I never have. Back when ACER and others like it were more no-name, I think they were a bargain... Not sure what is out there like that these days
