Hot rod project - what's it worth?

Guy doing glasswork at my house last week has a hot rod project he's looking to unload, as he's breaking out on his own to start a company, needs a truck/van. We got to talking:

Former drag race car on '27 Ford frame

TOTALLY NEW FRAME - custom built

'50s-era fiberglass body ('24 style) in OK shape - needs work

Dropped front axle, transverse leaf spring with trailing radius arms F/R.

'38 Ford "Banjo" rear axle - 3.79 rear gear

'38 Ford front/rear drum brakes with 4 "wide-five" steelies

New BFGoodrich repop whitewalls all 4 corners

'65 283 V8 with tripower carbs, "Corvette" script finned valve covers

'50s T-5 manual transmission

Many new parts:

Vega-style steering box

Wilwood clutch/brake reservoir/pedal setup

Hot Rod aluminum radiator set up for SBC

Spun-aluminum fuel tank w/ brackets

BAD:

Engine needs rebuilt. Turns over but hasn't run in years.

No driveshaft, exhaust.

Fuel/brake/electrical lines all need done

'27 Ford windshield frame, cracked glass

No interior, body needs stiffening.

NO TITLE. Bill of sale only

4x4 ride height

Needs to be put together (is sitting on stands in his garage, needs sorted)

Cliffs: 1920's Ford hot rod roadster project...rolling chassis with powertrain...needs parts to finish. What's it worth, and what could it fetch on the market if someone were to flip it in the spring?

Clay if you get some pics send them to me and I will let you know based on the 3 years I did research on mine what you can expect to get out of it. Tbuckets were built until 27 and then the model a was produced. If he claims its a 29 based on a title and its a tbucket body chances are they dont match which isnt as big a deal as you would think.

No vin and no title will scare some people off but its not a huge thing. It will scare away alot of buyers, trust me. The options are go through the inspection process and get a homebuilt or assembled title or go online and buy an original title for $100 and claim it as what you have. The vin system wasnt created until the mid 50's I believe. Mint built tbuckets done up nice are only fetching $8-10K right now depending on options. Tbuckets arent as sought after as roadsters(what I had) or built model a's and 30's style cars.

  • 2 weeks later...

Met the guy last night, negotiated a very low price, since he has a bunch more parts I don't want. (Model T 4cyl flathead engine/trans, steering wheels, other wheels and vintage parts I'd never use).

If I can get it driving, I'd either flip it or keep it as a cruiser. The price is so low that even with about $1k more in parts I should be able to get a good price for it on the used market.

No trades for my truck.

My bad...FIL still hasn't bought a new Corvette. Papaw's 'Vette is not in play yet.

Well, I spoke to a couple peeps - as well as my wife :) - and I'm reminded of everything that's going on in my life. Combined with the amount of work this needs to get going, I'm listing it for sale for the guy.

Thanks for dealing with my continual car conundrum, CR!
