You guys should make me a mod. I walk with a cane and have a British accent and I'm a smarmy arrogant fuck. I'm like Dr.House, but uglier.3 points

WTF happened the "This thread is worthless without pics" smiley? @Casper I think @jbot should be disqualified. In a few months he is NOT going to be able to spend the time required to be a mod, due to letting the boys swim.3 points

So, I found a woman willing to put up with my motorcycling obsession and I married her Sunday. We leave Thursday evening to take a 10 day trip out west, with the FJR in tow. The route westward is yet to be decided, and the motorcycling destinations are yet to be decided. But I'm thinking it might be cool to stop for a day of riding in the Ozarks. And then 3-4 days in Colorado. One goal for the trip is to spend time in the Grand Canyon area. The itinerary will be flexible. I don't want to HAVE to be anywhere, at any specific time. But we do want to see the Grand Canyon. Any suggestions for 'must see' areas? 'Must ride' routes? 'Must stop' lodging or accommodations? I think we want to make it a point to stay in old Route 66 motels and see interesting roadside attractions...like the dinosaur mouth in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Hahaha Ultimately I'd love suggestions on places and roads to ride, whether in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, etc etc. The point is, the route is flexible. We'll go where the good motorcycling takes us. What say you, brethren of the long way home?2 points

My neighbor had the same injury - distal end of the bicep tore right off the bone leaving him looking like someone implanted a golf ball up near in shoulder. He's back to 100% now, though. All the best and hope you heal up as soon as possible. We need to start a club for injured bikers who can't ride. A sad, sad little club. We can meet at a Starbucks and sit in the corner making "brumm bruumm" noises.1 point

Spa day usually works for most...most places do couples massages etc. Some even have anniversary type packages where you get massages and a private hot tub, etc. My wife and I did that once but it was in one of the Vegas hotels. I've never looked at something like that locally.1 point

The Crown Vics are slow compared to everything else law enforcement uses these days. The Taurus and Explorer are no slouch. Explorer supposedly hits 155+ in highway pursuits. It won't accelerate like a bike, but a 600 isn't going to lose one on an open road. Fleeing is a felony. Speeding is a fine and a license suspension at worst. I'd take my chances with stopping and being polite before I risked a felony on my record.1 point

Thanks a lot guys. Pretty much decided she was the one when she kept asking me to take her for rides, and would rather spend the day on the back of the bike than just about anything else. Great suggestions Casper! That's what I'm looking for. Any other ideas? I've got an open slate of ten days just waiting to be filled with destinations and roads.1 point

I honestly don't know where I should try to place myself. Ride solo 99% of the time so I have no reference. I figure medium is a safe bet? I think I read there will be opportunity to change groups if needed?1 point

You are a brave man taking on a CBR 1000 as your first four stroke motor to work on. The first four stroke I ever worked on was just a single cylinder. I am no expert but what happens with the valves to my understanding is they wear into the head and that is why you they need re-shimmed. I know with quads what happens is the quad sucks dirt in there at times through the air filter and it grinds away on the head. Also just wear and tear from the valves beating on the head. The motor comes stock with shims in it. As far as it being a temporary fix I believe it depends on how far they are off. If you're just talking a couple thousandths probably not a big deal, reshim it. If it's to the point where the shim you are using is down to next to nothing compared to what the original shim was more than likely that valve has beat the snot out of the head and needs redone. There are definitely better mechanics than me on this forum so listen to them over me for sure. This is just my elementary understanding of it all.1 point

Lapping the valves should be sufficient. If you recut the seats you should also get the valves themselves ground and then lap them in. None of this replaces the shims, those are on the other side of the head.1 point

Thinking of jumping in. Med group is "full" with 10 riders. I don't see a group listed for Mach Retard? I likely belong in Medium? Does that automatically revert me to the Hate Train Group? (which is fine as I have hate in my heart that I need to let out) Still unsure if I will be free. I'd likely start with you all in Logan and peel off once the route comes back across RT93 near end of route. I may be able to hang in the Med-Fast group? My bike is hella fast, Yo. I ride about 50% of the route regularly.1 point

Earplug tickets are cheaper than hearing aids. Last time I was pulled over on the bike I specifically said to the cop; "Is it OK if I remove my helmet so I can take my earplugs out and hear you better?" He was fine with that and didn't react at all to the earplugs, they were a non-issue for him. No ticket for the speeding either, despite being more than 25 over. Just a friendly slow-the-fuck-down chat.1 point

Will any of the new mods be able to ban Tonik for a day? We could have a contest... I think the only advantage of a mod would be to see all the post that are deleted by accident.1 point

I just don't understand things very well I guess. The mod function should be an administrative duty and not a way to guide topics or evoke your own personal sensitivities. If you want to get involved in a topic then leave your mod powers at the door. One of the funny things that has happened lately has been the new user names that were obviously made by an existing user. This is in direct violation of the rules and an easy administrative fix, whether you agree with the rule or not. Seeing something that you don't agree with and moving it to a new and improved thread is not needed or wanted because it is neither new or improved. Having things in a neat little package that fits a mods idea of how things should be is not fun, entertaining or compelling enough to keep people involved. There are plenty of corporate motorcycle websites that work under those principles. This is not what I'm looking for and it is the reason I am here.1 point

Rode 56 today - it's tar and gravel between Laurelville and S. Bloomingville. Very bad. Then, it's being torn up for 3 miles out of S. Bloomingville after you make the turn by the gas station until you get to 374. So if you're going down that way, avoid those parts.1 point
