  1. What OhioMike said. Upgrading the garage to 220v service subpanel. That will increase the residential value of your property. Good idea.
  2. Very interesting. None rechargeable though, too bad. Nice long life for amp hours. I've watched quite a few mil-tech developments vanish lately. I'll talk about them, but not in public on the internet. One that is worthy of discussion, is one I think might substitute for most of the batteries. A unique hybrid of electric propulsion, a few small batteries in the circuit, and a small constant speed turbine to produce power. MIT has made turbine generators running on kerosene, as small as a tiny stack or quarters. It could be scaled up to the size of a D-cell battery. What size would be necessary for that 1.4Kw output. That's what I want. A jet turbine powered hybrid electric motorcycle. It could be very light weight for a vehicle design.
  3. In case you're wondering... Here's the state of the art, current industry standard for electric motorcycle power (maybe): Turnkey Nanophosphate® Power Core Pack -110kW (In development) (this is equivalent to 147.45 horsepower) http://www.a123systems.com/Collateral/Images/English-US/110kW%20Power%20Pack.jpg Constructed from individual Nanophosphate® AHR32113 Power Modules: http://www.a123systems.com/Collateral/Images/English-US/AHR32113%20Power%20Module.jpg A123 Systems - Products A123 Systems Charges Into Motorcycle Racing - wired.com A123 Systems plant in Livonia will power racing motorcycles - crainsdetroit.com
  4. Stove is heavy amp draw, so size your wiring first for the distance and the load. Buy wire, junction box, transfer boxes if needed, conduit if required, etc. All per code. Install per code and have it all inspected before connecting it up to the circuit breaker box. Let somebody else finish it off at the circuit breaker box. High voltage/amps isn't fun to play with. Most I've ever done was run a temp line from basement utility to garage for a 220 compressor. Basically a 50ft 220 extension cord... http://www.wireityourself.com/220_volt.html http://www.220outlet.com/ edit: I assume you might be burying the line from the house to the garage. That's a specific type of wire in sealed conduit. That will be different from the rest of it. Terminating at the exterior walls on both ends. IDK about 220 overhead, I don't remember anyone doing that.
  5. I skipped the pads and got a Lenovo netbook. Kicks ass. Samsung now suing Apple for patent infringement related to signal processing technology stolen. What this is really all about is that Samsung was releasing new product prior to the introduction of new Apple product. It's an attempt to stall the release. Sometimes works, and sometimes not.
  6. Years ago, I realized that an area near Buffalo New York had dozens of buildings full of old motorcycle parts for salvage. Several different companies there were all in the motorcycle salvage business. The problem is, trying to find that information now. Maybe they are all gone, I don't know, but I still look for them online.
  7. So anyway, time to say hello. Welcome to OR, in all it's glory. I was born in Defiance county. I know the NW of Ohio. Including the uber flat Black Swamp area with all it's straight roads and high winds. I get up that way a few times a year. Usually by boring rt23, but I'll come back to Columbus through Lima or Wapakoneta and wander around on country roads.

That's what I was thinking. The rest of the world thinks we're wrong. Which of course, means that if we ever go to war with france, china, belgium, south korea, or michigan... we're not going to win. I would hope that anyone who wrote a bogus equation like this one with two answers, would at least be observant enough to recognize the error either way, when it might be off by a factor of 144. Unfortunately, most people are not that observant. In simple words: If you wrote this little equation to determine the proper amount of torque on a bolt. I would hope that you would recognize 2 ft-lb or 288 ft-lb as correct, and ignore the other. edit: And recognize it correctly, geez... *puts tin foil hat back on*
  9. New news, somebody found similar on Droid. Which is normal. A location file of current wifi and cell towers is kept on all phones to speed it up. The Droid file keeps 20 days of one type of data and 30 days of the other. Not a continuous list. And it's rooted, kind of hard to get to.
  10. 60, 61 in May. Riding since 1967. which is.... 44 years.

I'm not flying on any of your spaceships. You're a dangerous MF. *puts tin foil hat back on*
  12. There was an experiment in Britain a while ago, where they locked the handlebars to the frame, and attempted to turn the bike with just body. Not much happened. Only shallow turns happened on a motorcycle. A bit of a surprise. Whereas on a bicycle, you can ride without hands anytime and turn pretty well. If you're real careful in the turns. Otherwise fall down just as easily. edit: Again, I think this will vary from one motorcycle to another. Some have front fork geometry that will respond better or worse.
  13. Scratch remover products that contain alcohol or petrol chemicals, will fog Lexan (polycarbonate) or turn it white. Effectively ruining it. Test a small spot first. Most do not have petrols, I think, since that would be stupid. I've used the Novus on my clear Lexan helmet shields. No problem so far. Like I said, any coatings on the plastic will sooner or later get removed by abrasives. Only mild polishes with no petrol chemicals, or just mild soap and water, should be used on coated plastics of any type. I think Honda even had a warning on my flyshield that nothing should be used, other than mild soap and water. Because of the coatings, I suppose. I do not think the Honda flyscreen is Lexan, I think it's an acrylic plastic. But I have restored aircraft Lexan windshields using the correct supplies, so it can be done. Coatings generally will be removed and gone, unless separately restored. edit: checked the Novus website. for undamaged plastics that have coatings, the #2 and #3 are not recommended. Only the #1 polish because of the coatings. Novus is a Lexan scratch remover. Also works on acrylics, plexiglas and fiberglass.
  14. I use the 2oz Novus kit, for faceshields etc. You'd probably need the bigger 8oz kit for something big. It's almost like mil-spec restoring fluids I've used. But it's basically just abrasives and polish. Any coatings on your windscreen will probably be removed. Also probably a moot point at this stage. Automotive headlight kits are similar. Anything beyond that would require one of those aircraft restore kits of fine abrasives. Expensive, and those will take anything out with a lot of hours working on it. If yours is really Lexan, it will take some time. That's tough polycarbonate. http://www.amazon.com/Novus-Polish-Plastic-Scratch-Remover/dp/B0000WUC7E http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035U5ARK/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0000WUC7E&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0ZNX378NJC5Q7HQ7X9Q7 edit: use microfiber, not paper towels... no scratches. edit: The novus liquids will not take out deep scratches. For that, use a Micro Mesh kit. http://sportys.com/PilotShop/product/12021/?&utm_source=Google%2BBase&utm_medium=comparisonshopping&utm_campaign=MerchantCenter
  15. I can body steer or butt steer a bicycle... but a motorcycle doesn't respond so well. It weighs a lot more. I think some motorcycles butt steer pretty good. Others, not so much. My old CB550F would do it like a champ. But I could also hang off that one by a knee. I've not seen another bike that I would want to or need to do that. (Works best with old style banana seats.) edit: the ultimate body steer --> unicycle
  16. Autozone added motorcycle oils last year or so. A small but good selection. It's hard to spot on the "wall of oil". Generally on the left and up higher.
  17. these newer engines are not the earlier ducted fans. They are real miniature turbine engines. Dude that sat next to me at Rockwell was a RC pattern champion. He was good. And it is quite expensive, but lots of fun. There's a RC runway up at Alum Creek. I stop there on weekends to watch. North on Africa from Lewis Center. Left side.
  18. Was that before or after you changed bikes? Could that have been it?
  19. Qouted out of context, I was speaking about devices, not apps. Not a big difference though. I get the idea. Code reviews? Yeah, I'll generally check out an app before I add it, and after. But that's the point. This one in question comes with the iphone. It isn't added by the user. It's part of the iOS4 operating system. Not really an opt-in. Quick list: Most of this has been known for about 6 months. Comes with phone, isn't added by user. (iOS4) List starts when phone is activated. (consolidated.db) Stores a list of latitude/longitude locations and timestamps. In one year of iOS4 it can record 60,000 locations. Not controlled by user through location services. Contains more data that hasn't been analyzed yet. File is unencrypted and unprotected. File is not truncated, it is continuous. Actual data directory is ~Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup Can be accessed by anyone without a court order. Can be exported and viewed in Google maps and other apps. Records and saves all movements, no exceptions. (a bit erratic) Appears to be triggered by phone use and movement across tower cells. Records using GPS location. Records using cell tower triangulation location. Records which wifi locations are accessible. List is restored across backups. List is restored across migrations. A copy will be on any computer the phone syncs/backs up with. Currently accessed in digital forensics. No warrant necessary during an arrest. (Including traffic stops in Michigan.) Possibilities: This is all for speed of device and connection. Makes it run better. Apple used to pay Skyhook for this service and info. Now we're doing it for them. This is targeted marketing. Money will be earned. Google, Nokia, Skyhook Wireless also store information like this, in a lesser fashion. Euro nations will find fault, same as suing Google Maps for recording wifi hotspots. Can be used to prosecute/defend in court. Incriminate or exonerate. Technology exists to copy this file and others including photos from your phone wirelessly by proximity, without your knowing it. Data will be accessible wirelessly, in drive-by fashion, in the near future. or... I have a tinfoil hat... Best comment found:
  20. Tracked for cause, sure. Tracked for no cause, wut? All cellphones can be tracked by signal location, or GPS if on. Or secretly having the GPS turned on remotely, if part of the design. We won't find too many phone manufacturers admitting to that either. But yeah I agree. We give up all of that by owning a modern cell phone. It pretty much comes with it.
  21. the push/pull thing is counter steering. The quickest way to experience it is to try to gently steer with one hand only. It will quickly become evident what forces make a turn. Equally, body motion at the hips, will steer the bike. Pushing the tank with a knee has an effect also. I've noticed that lowering the body over the tank is a distinct difference, compared to maneuvers while sitting up straight. I'm not going to claim expert here, just guy who has been riding a long time. the MSF class will have some good info on most of this. They prefer you use a certain style grip on the handlebars as a beginner. The rest of it is body in motion on the motorcycle in motion. Time and practice will set that in place. Don't try too hard, and don't fight it. Just learn as you go. It takes time. Be one with the motorcycle, grasshopper... edit: on a motorcycle, smooth is good...
  22. True. My droidX has that, my laptop too, and I added it to my computers at home. None of them records location data without my knowing it and hides it where I can't find it.
  23. They also have the Ink'd for 10 bucks - free shipping http://dealnews.com/Skullcandy-Inkd-In-Ear-Headphones-for-10-free-shipping/453447.html http://dealnews.com/Skullcandy-Inkd-In-Ear-Headphones-for-10-free-shipping/447291.html and smokin' buds for 13 bucks - free shipping http://dealnews.com/Skullcandy-Smokin-Buds-Earbud-Headphones-for-13-free-shipping/446462.html edit: I break them regular. I'm starting to put shrink tubing on both ends for a strain relief to last longer.
  24. That's what was discovered in a hidden file on the devices. Checking other manufacturer's similar devices didn't find apps and data like that. Apparently allowed by the itunes EULA. And easily viewed with an open source app in OS X. Not very nice. iPhone Software Tracks Location Of Users - Information Week Apple IPhone, IPad Tracking User Whereabouts, Researcher Says - Bloomberg
  25. yeah, sort of like buying a truck load of Ford car parts, building a car, and then suing Ford for building a car and stealing your ideas... Samsung is one of iphone/ipad major suppliers. Apple just lost their lawsuit against HTC and Nokia. Still one against Motorola. HTC and Nokia had looked for royalties from Apple for stolen ideas and ... got sued. There is still a lawsuit regarding those royalties. I don't see that one going well for Apple. Not a good outlook for winning against Samsung either. And in other news... iphone and ipad track your every movement and store it in a file. Apparently some part of the itunes EULA allows this...
