I got a ride yesterday in a friend of mines (totally restored, chassis off) 1969 Roadrunner with a 440, 2 four barrel carb set up "Beast". Having had the distinct opportunity to have actually lived & driven in the "60's", my mind went back in time (when he put the pedal to the floor & promptly put my head into the headrest) & I thought about the racing terms used then & today =
1960's 2006
We'll go from a 20-40 mph "kick-down" 20-40 mph "roll"
Ok you & me, rt 909, standing start Ok you & me from a "dig"
Dead mans curve? Didn't happen cars THEN Lets do IT / Twisties
DID NOT HANDLE, stop, turn, they just went Autocross
fast - straight - period
Fast 1/4 mile with carbs, headers, slicks Hmmmmm ya best be
(we call 'em drag radials today), 4.11 rear able to hit high 11's or
end, positraction, etc. Fast was anything less
turning 13.9 & less!!!!!! If your car did 14.50
people DID NOT laugh at you!
Fuel - you ran Sunoco at least 110 octane Nitrous anyone? Race Gas
cost was expensive, typically .30 a gallon I just paid $2.70 a gallon
Never heard or knew the fuckin word = for Sunoco 93 Octane
NITROUS???? yesterday!!!!
Times have changed -
