  1. you don't need to worry about that nut. just use a new washer and fold it over it in the 2 spots they have pre-bent. I safety wire mine instead. never had it come loose even without safety wire. I think it was installed on the 04's with too little torque is when the recall was made. the only other issues they're known for is the TPS (throttle position sensor) on all 3 years and the coils for the 03. the TPS caused random stalls when you pull the clutch in but would otherwise run just fine at WOT etc. the 03's coils were replaced by yamaha only if you brought it in and complained of a hesitation etc. it wasn't a actual recall. have a peek behind the radiator and you should be able to see if it has a tan expoxy top on them without any kind of stickers. those are the mitusbishi coils that were the upgrades. the denso are black tops with a denso sticker on it. and they actually look completly different when removed. so watch out on the 03 for the coils. to buy them would cost you several hundred bucks. I think they're about $70 each. the regulators sometimes fail on these also. it's not such of a big problem as it was on the 99-02 though. but there's been plenty of them I see on other forums going bad. mine has never failed me and it has 45k miles on it. expect to do the valves around 26k miles (recommended check). they're usually still good for most people. I ended up having to do mine around 43k. and I needed a new timing chain also. it was stretched too far to put back in time properly. good news is it's a $25 part. I can provide you a link for the factory service manual if you get one. Yamaha also has a diagnostic feature built in that allows you to test all of the electronics of the bike via the instrument cluster. it's called the diagnostic mode. I believe only Yamaha does this. you don't need any kind of diagnostic equipment to work on them. other than a multimeter. and you don't need that to check the battery voltage. you can do that in the diagnostic mode too.
  2. smooth as glass, no final sanding and buffing on the clear required.
  3. this is why I took the time to learn how to paint. honestly, if you can do a decent rattle can job you could do a decent spray job as well. the prep is the key to a good job. learning how to lay on the clear smooth without overspray and orange peel just takes a few practice attempts and setting up the gun.
  4. that's about the going price for a new crate engine. I had to buy one for my S/10 and the guy at the counter said about 75% of the engines he sells come in around $1500-2000. that's with the heads installed and all new gaskets. no intake, oil pan, valve covers, timing covers etc.
  5. oh and don't buy an engine that came from a NON CRASHED vehicle. chances are very likely it's there because the engine is bad if it's not crashed.
  6. $2300 is a bit high for a used engine swap. if it was a new engine expect to pay at least $1500 for the engine. but used ones can be had for little to nothing if found in the right places. for example, U pull and pay you can get one for $150. but the catch is you have to pull it yourself. so expect to pay around $500 for a pulled running engine.
  7. I think i got bad gas 2 weeks ago at a shell in falmouth Ky. area guys know the place. we always stop there and get gas. been getting it there since 2003. never had a problem before. well my bike was hard to start this past sat. and when it did it would almost cut out when you gave it gas. I looked in the tank with a match....lol not. a flashlight and it was kind of clear looking and not much gasoline smell. and I could see fucking rust on the bolt parts for the fuel pump base in the bottom. I never seen it in there and I had the tank off earlier this summer. I think it was either a lot of ethanol or water. I drained it out and it was crystal clear like water. that was not fucking gas at all. I can't believe I made it home on that shit without noticing anything different with the bike. the fresh gas was amber like beer. so moral of the story is doesn't really matter what brand you get you can get bad gas from even the top names. oh and I used gumout regain fuel system cleaner lol. runs like a champ again.
  8. I actually tried to mimic the best I could the factory graphics from 2003. I chickened out on the whole sticker thing. I did paint the white blocks though. no stickers.
  9. I think they took the bodywork off for cool pics.
  10. lol. you're totally not understanding what I am talking about lol. some of the guys said the chain should be hanging down like it looks like it has a droop to it. that's a bit excessive. so I posted a picture I happen to have of a World Superbike and it's chain is kind of straight. straighter than mine and it has 1.5" slack. and I highly doubt it's slapped together for pics.
  11. realized that's not actually gerber's site. other reviews confirms what I said about the blade. http://www.gerbergear.com/Tactical/Knives/EVO-Jr-Knife_22-41493
  12. my gerber is a POS. the steel is cheap. dulls easily cutting soft materials. I have this one, http://www.gerberknives.co/product/Gerber/Knives/22-41432/EVO-Serrated-Edge
  13. funny thing about those kinds of people... they hate cops but seem to always be in contact with them lol
  14. the cops where I live do beat people.
  15. this is mine at 1.5" travel. I thought it's pretty generous. it doesn't look too far off from the spies's R1.
  16. I think some of you might be over doing the it's too tight thing. here's a pic of ben spies R1. it's not that loose either.
  17. stick to name brand aftermarket and you'll be fine. EBC, Vesrah (if you cant find vesrah pads you must have a odd ride) ferodo, DP (off road leader), etc etc.
  18. If you'd like to run linux use linux mint. It includes all the codecs at install so u don't have to spend an hour finding the right ones to install yourself. http://linuxmint.com I hate ubuntu's new desktop. windows 8 tried to copy it for whatever reason. it sucks balls to me. I Fing hate everything about it.
  19. if the wheels are mounted at yamaha, they put the chain on my R6 with way too little slack too. it was so tight you couldn't move it.
  20. I was thinking of the evo 3d thing that virgin mobile carried. fair but not great. the regular evo is a lot more of a phone
  21. oh wait that was a different version of it through virgin mobile, but it's still came with android 2.1 they're already on 4.1 or something now. my old phone had 2.1 and it was dog compared to the new one
  22. the evo was a low end phone wasnt it?
  23. don't forget the wd-40
  24. the guy i work with has an Iphone4 and doesn't care for it. and I've never had to reboot my phones before. I think that has more to do with manufacture than the os
