On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61. When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be 205 mph. ``I was in total disbelief,'' Loney told the St. Paul Pioneer Press for today's editions. ``I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast.'' Several law enforcement sources told the newspaper that, although no official records are kept, it was probably the fastest ticket ever written in the state. After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward. The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license - and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph. A search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County. Tilley did not return calls from the newspaper to his home Monday. A working number for him could not immediately be found by The Associated Press today. Only a handful of exotic sports cars can reach 200 mph, but many high-performance motorcycles can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can hit 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said. Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death at 200 mph. ``I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour,'' Swanson said. ``But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure.'' He only got the speeding ticket because when he stopped the car dieseled down and died so he told the state trooper that the throttle got stuck (which its apparently known to do in that model Nova) and got off without getting wreckless or anything. The cop was way cool though... I remember, he said "If I were you, I wouldn't have stopped. You know I couldn't have caught you, right? That being the case, you're not going to jail; but you ARE getting a ticket." I've never been so grateful to get a ticket in all of my life. What's funnier, I pled not guilty in court, because the judge I drew knew me from multiple other recent violations, and I didn't want to deal with the consequences just then. It would take a freakin high ass horsepower Hyabusa to reach those speeds. Million dollar MotoGP bikes dont even reach 205 actual MPH. All Tilleys are fast! 205 MPH, and what amazes me is that he got caught. The ticket shows a $215 (plus court costs I'll bet) for the speed. That's not too bad. A little more than a $1/mph. AudiOn19s Posted September 24, 2004 Report Share Posted September 24, 2004 That's either one heavily modified 1000RR (turbo and nitrous maybe?) or one very poor calculation on the part of the police. Seeing as though that bike will go about 175 stock and bikes loose areodynamic advantages at speeds like that he'd have to be making nearly 300hp (double the stock amount) to get to close to 200mph. I'd be crying foul if I were the guy because it's not likely the bike could really go that fast...then agin when your in his situation I doubt that you have alot of room to complain. Big Red was the '69 camaro built for the silver state open road race. The guy won the race one year then the next morning decided that he was going to run the course backwards on his trip back....I think the ticket he got was 220+..they published a copy of it in Hot Rod magazine. I think those officers were high tongue.gif I don't know about that. A stock Hyabusa will run 205, given enough road. RWHP on a Busa is right around 157, and they weigh in at a hefty 478 lbs dry. A CBR1000RR is right around the same HP, but weighs 80 pounds less. The computer shuts it down at 175 though. I bet with a small rider, a Bonneville box, and the right gear, it could do it. This year's 1000 sportbikes are a big jump from the last generation. The last year Honda raced the RC51 / VTR1000SP2 at Daytona, they were running over 200 mph on the back straight. They are only V twins, but are somewhere between 160 and 180 RWHP. Granted, they were very trick Honda built bikes, but still reasonably close to stock.
