Look what I caught.

Just caught this in my yard about a half hour ago chasing down a slug.

Northern Short-Tailed Shrew is one of the few poisonous mammals in the world. It contains a neurotoxin it delivers through the lower teeth... I think it's the lower. Not particularly harmful to humans but can give a painful bite that may last a couple days. They use it to paralyze their prey for ease of eating and for storage. No spoiling if it's still alive stashed in the "pantry", so to speak. ;)

Gave it a nightcrawler. It was like watching me fight an anaconda and eat it.

did anyone else LOL at this?

Yeah, I did as I wrote it. Thought it seemed a strange thing to say. I actually caught it with my hand. Grabbed it's stubby little tail and it squealed loudly. I then dropped it and grabbed a small shovel. Once it's calm, you can hold it without fear. I did for my gf to take some pics I'll post tomorrow or something.

I didn't know that about the Neurotoxin.....I've killed at least 6 of them this year. We have one right now. He may be going to move out soon as I just applied some grub killer to clear up some issues in the lawn and without food, he should leave.

They must have poor eyesight as all I have to do is bury an empty can in the ground near his hole, fill it with water and they fall in and drown....like they can't even see it. They always seem to move in right by my front door.

My cats have been leaving those guys on my back porch all summer. I thought it was just a mole. I was wondering why they were not eating them. They eat everything else they catch. They have a weird sound like a high pitch echo ish' squeak.

The cats can eat them. Actually, you or any other animal can drink a cup of venom. As long as you don't have any wounds in your mouth or stomach, the enzymes in your stomach will break down the venom (an enzyme itself). This is why other animals can eat poisonous ones without dying themselves. I'll post some pics later today.

I nailed one of those (i think) in a sticky trap in my garage a few months ago. I thought it was a baby rat or mole or something, I never would have thought it might be a shrew... Did you take that pic? Is it chewing on a condom wrapper? Oh and btw, good luck with your slug chase.

More pics. Sorry, as they are a bit big.

Update: She was happily released with a belly full of 1-1/2 large nightcrawlers to catch her back up to speed. They are ravenous creatures and need to eat very often. (I assume a female since the males release a stinky scent. Though, this one was young, so who knows and it wasn't important enough for me to 'Steve Irwin' her ass..)

Did you throw it in the washer?

Shrews are not poisonous, they are venomous.

Venomous = when animals bite or inject the venom. example: cobra, centipedes

Poisonous = the poison is throughout the animals body so it delivers it once its bitten kind of deal. example: milipedes

I realize some of the definitions in dictionaries elude to both being the same. but this is really the proper way to use the adjectives. Just trying to inform you guys. :)

Cool Catch

It was dirty. :D;) And you are correct on the venomous/poisonous thing. I actually said poisonous in my first post - venomous in the rest. Guess I just didn't catch the first one.
