I believe there actually is a guy that has that exact truck you described with a 12v cummins, but I think it isn't a true factory crew cab, none the less cool as fuck. My wife will always have a newer ride (i.e. her Odyssey) but having an old pickup truck can't be beat. Once I get the Ford fixed up, I'm going to DD it downtown, wearing a suit nonetheless. Keep the Passat for longer trips out of town or when A/C is needed between May and October. As I've found out, the only problem with older trucks is converting the old A/C to R-134 (which I did to my '82 Chevy diesel) and cruise control (none of my trucks have them ). Aside from those two items, they will be reliable. WHEN something breaks, you know you can buy a part from ANY parts store anywhere you are in America for cheap - and be able to do field repairs relatively easily: That's great piece of mind. I also envy others who drive clean old cars everyday and even those who enjoy their stripped-out cars. There are days where I cannot stand all the technology in my Saab and I pine for a brutally simple car and having a lot of fun with it. I have another vote, I saw it on the way home and I thought that is awesome.
