Didn't see a thread here and I see alot of other DSLR users here, so I figured I'd start it up.

Just post your random photos that you take from day to day.

I'll start from a shot from this morning.

Is the noise intentional? If so I like it...really makes the B&W, nice shot.

Yes. Part of my post processing and is in line with traditional Infrared Film. I'm partial to B&W and toned images. I'm also a firm believer that grain does have a place in digital photography. Even if it needs to be added intentionally.

Hey ladies and gents, looking for some C&C on this shot. I personally am on the verge of liking it but not sure. I like the sun rays coming through the cab of the lift, and the whole silhouette effect. But the sky is kind of burned out and have some considerable lens flare, which might just be part of the effect.

What are your thoughts?

You have a CPL Filter or anything?

It's a nice shot but the sun is alittle too much IMO, because of that it seems that you underexposed the rest of the image.

I like the general layout of the image. You got that right.

UV. I was walking up to the lift and saw the shot, had no preparation. Once of those shots that would be nearly impossible to time again. Well the rest of the image is underexposed but thats what I'm getting at, is maybe it would be a good 'sillhouette' shot, I'd have to do some work to it. I think if I would have bracketed the shot and done an HDR, it might have been too busy of a shot.

Looking at the image the first thing.....lens hood.

Did you ditch the UV Yet?

Second.....ND Filter

Bracketing - not sure what your 3100 will allow you to do.

RAW

Those are my initial thoughts.

-Did have the hood on.

-Did not ditch the UV filter yet, I just CAN'T!!!!

-I have an ND filter but I wasn't planning on using it when I took the shot.

The 3100 doesn't have a bracketing feature, any HDR image I do basically requires a tripod, which I was just walking up to the spot and pulled her up to shoot so didn't have time to grab it.

-I always shoot RAW. sounds bad.

The flare and likely some sharpness fall off is from the UV. I know it's tough, but ditch the filter and use the hood at all times, except when perhaps it interferes with the on board flash. However, the on board should really only be used for fill flash outside anyway.

Not sure if you will like it, but composition wise my eye is drawn to the cab in the sky however, there's not enough depth for me so I started to play.

  • Converted to B&W with some retro-type grain
  • Added some dark Vingette
  • Cleaned up just a few misc. items

Hood wouldnt have mattered on that shot. Too direct. I have shots like that from last week in Florida. Though at a different time of day, so I have a different effect.

Did you set you ISO to 200 or was it Auto? Why is your exposure turned down a stop?

I shoot at 200 ISO default, unless I need to change it.

It was turned down a stop because I had turned down the EV earlier in the day and hadn't changed it since then. This was a quick grab and shoot situation.

Streaking car and non-lens distortion correction in the image below were intentional. I <3 the wide angle lens and I'm not going to hide it!

Beautiful day today. Zoo wasn't too busy which was nice. Will likely crop this one a bit differently though.
