Did you go to Newport? (i went early last week)

Been there several times, but these were from our Gatlinburg, TN Trip. It's pretty nice. Slightly smaller but on the same level as Newport. I actually like Newport better. Chicago is good too.

If you ever get a chance go see the Georgia aquarium in Atlanta, it's pretty nice.

We have and I agree it is nice. Honestly though, I still think Newport is great and while Atlanta is cool, factoring in the 8hr drive puts Newport ahead IMO.

Curious... why such an insanely high ISO?

If you have ever tried to take non flash photos in an aquarium it make perfect sense. Water displaces light and makes it very deceiving to a camera.

My shots from newport (will be up tonight) are a between 3200/6400 an probably would have done upwards of tims 12k or higher too if my camera hadnt crapped out on me mid aquarium

I wouldn't call those ISO's crazy high. A decent SLR can pull down ISO's of 3200-6400 with good dynamic range without issue. 12,800 is pushing it a bit on a 5yr old body but not too much. I can double that with my 5DMKII without any question and get similar if not better quality but I don't carry it out and about too often.

Two main reasons for the ISO's though. Shutter speed needed for the focal length shot (hand-held with a non IS Lens). Shutter speeds of 1.5x the focal length are minimums. I shoot for 2x that to get sharp images without issue. However the real reason is to do the very best I can at minimize the impact of the subjects movement.

The latter is very important as the impact of a Jellyfish moving at such a close range, even if moving slow will magnify the speeds they are moving. Especially critical since I was not panning with their movements as I would say a race car. Again, much easier to capture an object in movement from a distance than it is up close.

Trish is spot on when it comes to the impact of lighting on aquariums. I hope that helps.
