Gump
They should make a chain shaped cup for the end of the spray can so half of it is not spraying into the air and all over everything.

Bad324
not gonna lie I tried it in gear once or twice when I was lazy. But I used one of those chain brushes so my hand was at least 6" from the chain

Tonik
I used to use one of these brushes. Just hold it up there and spin the wheel. Flip the brush and do it one more time. For 10 bucks it really made the job less hassle.http://www.amazon.com/Finish-Line-Grunge-Brush-Chain/dp/B000BS02LS

c7fx
If your spaying anything at the rear sprocket think about using a brake cleaner on the rear rotor after your done. Nothing like hitting the rear brake and nothing happens.

CBBaron
chain gets washed with the rest of the bike...when it rains+1Isnt that why they have o-ring chains.I put some chain lube on it occasionally so that the outside doesnt appear rusty but otherwise do nothing special. Just replace it a little more often. I'm too lazy to put that much effort into it when chains are cheap and easy to replace.Learned that from commuting on a bicycle in all weather.
