  1. Citi? They lose money at a record pace and then get abandoned by their CEO right when the heat is about to come down: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119431769552383562.html?mod=googlenews_wsj. No, I doubt they are going out of business but this is 'whats wrong' with corporate America. Sorry, had to vent.
  2. 32 bit = 4GB worth of memory addresses. If you have a swapfile configured, it will eat the top out of this number as it counts as normal ram to the processor. 64 bit = 100 jiggabytes worth of memory addresses, which results in maximum WIN.

419eater.com has some hilarious results from people baiting those guys. What's sad is that people fall for this shit ALL THE TIME. If it wasn't so profitable, they wouldn't be spamming so much.
  4. I blame myspace. I don't have kids so wtf do I know, but the problem that I see is parents just don't have time to snoop around in their kids lives 24/7 anymore. In the good old days, kids still wanted to drink, have sex, do drugs, etc but their parents found out about it before it became a problem and issued a righteous punishment. These days, kids are living completely separate lives from their parents, who probably have to both work (if they aren't divorced, in which case they SURELY have to both work). Kids go places and do things on their own much more, thanks to cell phones and cars and myspaces and intertubes and all this new fangled shit that just makes it impossible for parents to invade their kids privacy to keep them out of trouble. Sure, its the parents fault for not keeping up, and letting their kids get into this crap in the first place, but what do you all propose can be done to get these things under control? Its real easy to blame the parents, but no one is doing anything to help a clearly desperate situation besides saying "oh MY kids won't get into that"...
  5. We can thank the bright hue of red our state currently has for this law. Officials were quoted as saying that if this was an anonymous vote by the state senate, it would have gotten shot down right away. Thanks to every state politician being a slave to conservatism, they had to vote for this bill so it wouldn't come back to bite them at election time. Thanks, republicans! /quickly steps into flame suit
  6. Suction is not a force, only pressure is. This was the point of that question, not the motion of the piston.
  7. It means the value of the US birthday is only .67 compared the value of the international birthday, the YEARO. Sky is falling, you will die poor, get ready for the bond market to skyrocket, etc etc. O and happy birthday Eli, hope you and your family have another good year!
  8. As soon as there is a cheapo airport nearby that can accommodate SkyBus planes. The market for cheap, direct flights to LV is too deep for them to get into and actually make money, unless they fly you to area 51 and let you hitch a ride to Vegas...
  9. A good beginner bike: 600cc or less I-4, 1000cc or less v-twin, both carb'd only. Every mfr makes these to this day, and has a past lineup of good bikes. Another good feature of a beginner bike, scratches. That way, you wont feel as bad when you drop it. Buy it cheap, ride it til you're not happy with it, sell it for what you paid, and move on to what you really want. Don't listen to guys who say 'oh a new 600/636/900/etc is a great starter', for too many people it was their first and last bike.' Fact: way more people die on race replica bikes than on dual-sport bikes. Get something slow to learn on and don't become a statistic.
  10. Try spending it. Sales taxes in most parts of Canada are 13% or more.
  11. You clearly overlooked FOX News... I keed, I keed. But seriously, what stings the most is that cable co's won't sell channels a la carte, in which case the 'niche' (channels that no one watches) would go away in favor of a free market decision on what channels get funded. But I digress. There were some 'token white folks' in the pics they show on the web site, doesn't that mean they are being 'multicultural'? If you answered no, think about what a political convention looks like (on either side) and ask yourself if they are multicultural or even a fair representation of the population. My point is, there are probably more important things on which to argue the racial divide, this is just a 'biggest loser' contest. Now that you mention it... As a skinny person, I am subjugated and ostracized by this event and feel that it's a mockery of freedom to have a contest that only fat people can enter! Cue the "That's Weightist!" kid.
  12. Gold standard? It's not really the cause of, or solution to, all of our problems (beer is.) You must be new here. See: The Wizard of Oz The monetary system has looked very scary for many decades. The only bright side of the war in Iraq (no flames for this, just shut up and read) is that OPEC is all the less likely to switch away from the USD since we are technically in control of the output of that country. The oil market is one of the few things left supporting the US dollar globally. Cliffs: If OPEC doesn't trade in dollars, no one in the world will want our debt, and the dollar will make the PESO look GOOD. We need to 'influence' oil exporters in order to make sure this doesn't happen. We have been in this boat for a LONG time, we just have to cross our fingers, spend our paychecks, and hope no countries decide to call us to the mat financially. My advice? Invest internationally. Now.
  13. For an unfinished basement the cheapest way would certainly be simply ordering a single-piece carpet cut to size for your room. For the carpet tiles that look like legit carpet, you want Legato brand and its only sold by Home Depot. It's about $3/sqft, sold by the case.
  14. How much should one of these be coughing up during WOT? I was playing with one the other day on my bike and it was doing ok, I am just wondering if it was stock or not. It let out a pretty thick trail of nice blackish haze when it kicked down, like it was chugging a LOT of gas, or had no cats, or something. The exhaust was pretty quiet. The plate was '2 FLY SKY' I think, if anyone knows who it might be. Those are nice looking cars, I would be real impressed if they ran that well stock. We were too busy cruising for me to ask him, he swung off the freeway after a little bit.
  15. The difference *could* be in the new heater using line-neutral versus line-line to run the heater elements. Its not likely, but without knowing the specs on power draw it's something to consider. It makes sense that it would draw considerably more current either way, since it has to do the heating all at once instead of over time. If your old heater was rated to do a full heatup in 45 mins, and you could drain it in 15, then it had a 3 to 1 buffer with the heat built up in the tank. If this new one is expected to provide the same temp water, it needs 3 times the current since it has no such buffer. I'm not an EE I just know a lot of them...
  16. To change the oil, inspect the brakes and wipers, costs $584? This is about 10 minutes in labor and maybe 30 dollars in parts. Sorry, that's where you lost me. Spending $4000 on an extended warranty, at that scale, should earn you, oh, a replacement gas cap. IF the current gas cap fails under a circumstance not related to your removing it or reinstalling it. IF.
  17. There is one thing that kills my battery faster than talking on it, with every phone i've ever owned: Hanging out in an enclosed or remote area where there is negligible or no signal. Even though it says 'power save mode on' after a while, this will kill my phone in a heartbeat. The lower the signal bars are, the faster the battery dies. So, do you perhaps carry the phone to more out-of-the-way places than your gf?
  18. I saw this in the dispatch while I was in line at the grocery store and wondered if anyone else could relate to the opening paragraph: http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2007/09/30/SPRSPEED.ART_ART_09-30-07_A1_P781I4J.html?sid=101 No, It wasn't me that got caught doing 140mph on 33 down by Lancaster, but... well lets just say no cop, no stop. Anyone else have the same feeling? The only really crazy thing in that article is that a truck driver was ticketed for doing 104mph! I guess he was going downhill or something
  19. Yeah, it's really only a problem if you outright have something to hide. I haven't had a bit of a problem moving cash or checks in excess of 10k at a time, but then again I'm not a drug dealer or international tycoon trying to skirt income taxes...
  20. I nailed one of those (i think) in a sticky trap in my garage a few months ago. I thought it was a baby rat or mole or something, I never would have thought it might be a shrew... Did you take that pic? Is it chewing on a condom wrapper? Oh and btw, good luck with your slug chase.
  21. 20% down is enough for most companies to not really worry about your earning potential, if you turn out to be a dead-beat they will still get a decent return on the house once they foreclose. What I want to know is if it's true that they a) don't require income docs for less than 20% and b) don't require PMI for less than 20%. This is very unlikely, especially in the current loan environment, and if he is getting lied to he needs to figure it out pretty quick.
  22. I don't know all that much about where the unions operate but I have been to the Marysville Honda plant and to a similar Toyota plant, and they were both UAW-free. In checking news articles it would seem that the unions only have support at plants in Canada. Anyhow, cars are cheaper and/or higher quality without unions because employees are held INDIVIDUALLY accountable for their performance and for their financial security. When you buy a GM car, just as much money goes to the employee who built the car, as to a retired employee who is drawing benefits from the company (this statistic is paraphrased and may not be completely accurate). Now, benefits are good and no way do I think that GM should neglect or abandon it's workers, but there needs to be a line between that and breaking the bank on benefits for retirees, family members, etc. because it is literally killing the native US automakers.
  23. GM should just outsource all the parts and assembly to Honda and Toyota, two *successful*, *union-free* automakers in the US. While it's easy in times like these, to say that the unions are completely to blame and if they didn't exist cars would be as cheap as toasters and the roads would all be paved with gold... The reality is that having large manufacturing (the kind that towns or cities are built around) without a union is just as bad has having it with a union in full control. Unions had a well-deserved place during the industrial era of the US, they protected worker's rights when the corporations did exert too much control over the labor market. Now, we get to see the flip-side of that, unions that overreach their power in the name of protecting workers, to the detriment of the company and the economy as a whole. What we need, IMO, is not to dissolve the unions, but to reduce their power to strike, fix wages, etc so that large companies can compete, but not have full run to screw over workers.
  24. Check Sams Club too if you have a membership, they have a variety of VERY heavy-duty shelves there. If you want something to hold 200 lbs per shelf on every shelf, there is no way I would suggest using something plastic unless its some solid heavy ABS stuff.
  25. Sheesh, for a bunch of smart guys you all sure have a hard time grasping this. If you borrow $265,000 at 6% apr, the monthly interest will be 265,000*(.06/12)=$1325. This should be obvious to anyone familiar with a calculator. If you plan on paying it off, you need to put principal down too: $2236 a month for 15 years, which (at first) is 1325 in interest and 911 in principal. $1588 a month for 30 years, which (at first) is 1325 in interest and 263 in principal. Any more questions?
