Check to see if the dash idiot lights all come on when the key is turned to the start position. If they don't it's most likely the ignition switch, or a fuseable link/fuse. If they do, work the gear shifter around throug the gears a few times, with the key turned to the start position if it's an automatic. For a standard, turn the key to the start position and push the clutch in and let it out several times. If either of these make the car either start or tey to start the safety switches are faulty, they will need replaced. If none of these work, have someone hold the key in the start position while tapping on the starter, if the motor trys to tuen over or starts the starter is faulty and will need replaced. Another test for the starter to verify the starter is getting the power to work the solenoid. Take a test light and check to see if you have power on the small wire running to the starter. There are 2 wires, one is the battery feed and it will always have power to it, it will be a big wire. Then there will be a smaller wire as well, that is the one to check. Hold the test light to it and have someone turn the key to the start position and siee if the light comes on. If it does, the starter is faulty, if not then something is bad back towards the ignition switch.

Agreed, I was listening to the radio last night on the way home. If the motor has a reasonable amount of compression on that cylinder, get an air retainer (screws into the sparkplug hole and holds the valve in place as you remove the spring). Pull the spring and see if the valve rocks in the guide. There shouldn't be any slop in it at all. you should also be able to tell if a new valve guide has been installed or not because there should be machining marks on the top of the guide where it was cut to length. Unless it's an aluminium head, they all have inserts and that can make it tough to tell. Hope it helps. Only other thing I can think of is the lifter got damaged when teh valve bend and it never got replaced and it's not pumping up like it should. But not knowing if the motor even has hydraulic lifters, that is pure speculation.

Ignition switch is going bad. You should check to see if there are any recalls on that car for ignition switch problems, but either way I would get it fixed quickly. It could possibly be a fire hazard.

Damn, this sounds like something that I would say. And just so you know, the reason for charging parts that you are powder coatsing is so the powder will stick to the part until it's baked on hard. The baking on is what makes it stick to the part that is coated. The powder melts and flows out from the baking heat. As far as removing it. Sandblasting will take it right off.

Phase converters 101 The ROTARY phase convertor, is a device that can create 3 phase power from a single phase source. The unit consists of a 3 phase motor and run capacitors that are wired to the motor. The basic convertor will consist of a capacitor bank that will have an addes value of 10 uFD (microfarad) per horsepower of the rating on the 3 phase motor, there is a second bank of capacitors with an added value of 5 UFD per horse power. There are 3 wires to a 3 phase motor. known as L-1, L-2 and L-3 The single phase power feeds in on L-1 and L-2, and the capacitors connect from L-1 to L-3 and L-2 to L-3 the L-1 to L-3 will be the 10 uFD per horsepower and the L-2 to L-3 will be where the 5 uFD per horsepower will connect. The 3 phase output is connected to the 2 lines of the motor. Now, a three phase motor will not start on single phase power without help. There are several ways to do this. One way is the pony motor, where a pully is put on the 3 phase motor and a small single phase motor is set next to ht and spins the motor up. Once it is spinning power isapplied to the converor and the motor begins to run. Then the pony motor is disconnected from power and the belt is popped off. This is a bit difficult and expensive if you don't hava the pony motor to use. The second way, which is really hillbilly is to wrap a piece of rope around the output shaft of the phase convertor and thn pull it as you would a lawn mower. then while the motor is spinning power is applied to the convertor and the motor will spin up the rest of the way. The third, and most complex is the start capacitor design. It will auto start the convertor with the touch of a button. It takes 75uFD per horsepower for the start capacitors to work, and the run caps can not be counted as part of that value. There are several circuit designs including using a time delay repay to control a contactor to connect the caps to start the motor and then disconnect it from the motor. It is not hard ot build if you have some electrical background, either a time delay relay or a standard pushbutton can be used to control the contactor for the start circuit. I am not trying to be vauge here but a full explanation for each design can be found by doing a google search for phase "convertor howto" Sizing Figuring the sizing to run motors is pretty simple you must have an idler motor (the one that IS the convertor) sized 15% to 20% larger than the largest motor you are running and it's best to stick with 20% for any motor that will be starting under load, like an air compressor. For welders and other non motorized devices, you need to find the max current draw of the device that that you will be wanting to run. All motors have a plate on them that will indicate what the max current draw for that size motor, you must have a motor that is between 75% and 110% of the max load that will be drawn. So an example would be a welder that at 230 volts will max draw 35 amps. The motor that you willl need to use as the idler motor will have amaximum current draw 75 to 110% of that 35 amp load that will be on it. If you are going to be running a device that will require 100% duty cycle at the max load then you will need 110% of the rating. For a better understanding, a welder will not run at 100% of it's rating all the time, unless it's a robot welder and its' running a continous bead. But a lathe, or a 3 phase furnace will draw it's max current for an extended period. This needs to be taken into account, and you should consider any additional devices that you may be adding later when you get your sizing for your motor. Something else, a 20 HP convertor is about as big as you will ever want to build. If it's not big enough for what you are doing, build two and tie them together. Phase convertors larger than 20 HP are very difficult to start, and require alot of start current if they are capacitor started. This will typically exceed 100 amps of draw and blow most any service breaker to a garage in short order. If you have a larger motor and want to use it, start it with a pony motor, the starting current is greatly reduced by doing that. And the cost of the start capacitors will not break you.

I do electrical work. Not as a profession, but still can take it from the weatherhead (piece at the top of the roof pipe where overhead wiring comes in) to the outlet and not have a problem anywhere inbetween. It depends on where you are building, some area's require a licensed bonded electrican to sign off on the job and still others require it to be wired by a professional start to finish. Then of course there are areas that say if it passes zoning inspection and power company then who cares. I know several licensed guys that if zoning permits will file for the electrical permits and inspect it and sign off on it for a fee and let someone else (me) do the work. Check with the zoning guys for specifics on what they require, because you do NOT want to do it wrong. They will flat tell you to rip it out and have it redone to their local ordnance. NOw either way it goes, with a log home, if it's will be exposed log on the interior it creates some issues with running the wire, so be aware that it's easier to drill the holes as the logs go up than it is to try to drill through 24 inches of wood and cement. I would also sujest that if you are planning a wired computer network, get that in place during the build and have the electric brought in underground, which to look the best will require a conduit stub up through the concrete pad. As well if you are planning a detached garage in the future, I would have them run couduit to it as well so that you will not have to have a conduit stub and an elbow running down the side of a log home later on. It really detracts for a log home IMO.

No, and the reason is that the thinnest part of anything in the combustion chamber is the dome of the piston. The cylinder walls are NOT aluminium either, aluminium blocks are sleeved with cast iron typically. Reason this is done is aluminium sucks for thermal expansion, and if aluminium slides against another piece of aluminium it will typiccally wear quickly, or seize together. So that only leaves the head, and that because aluminium will transfer heat very well, and the heads are full of coolant, getting the heads hot enough to melt would be so great the oil in the motor would fail and the motor would seize long before you would have any real melting occur. But if you lift a head, and loose the seal between two cylinders, it can melt a groove in the head between the cylinders. You also need to realize that when a motor goes into a hard detonation, not only do cylinder pressures spike to 10 to 20 times what a normal burn would be, but with the pressure spike, there are localized areas of very extreem heat because of the detonation of the fuel and air as well as the extreem pressures that are involved. Ask a submairner about what happens to the people on a sub that crushes because it goes too deep, the actually are incenerated, not drown or crushed as one might think. Reason is that the interior of the sub goes from 20 or so psi to 7000 to 10000 psi in microseconds. anytime you get that sort of pressure change you will get an extreem increase in heat.
