06 SV 650S - Advice on what bike to buy next?

Handling wise the SV1k and VFR800 are pretty close. I would give the reliability edge to the VFR (just slightly), but the maintenance is going to be more expensive on the Honda.

Even though the SV650 and SV1k are about the same size the SV1k just feels like a bigger bike. Hard to describe without riding them back to back. The 1000 motor is obviously stronger. Both can hustle through the corners quickly, the 650 just does it with a little less effort.

All 3 are good bikes with performance limits beyond the ability of most riders.

can anybody shed some light on if the 08- ish Honda VFR 800 has any known mechanical issues?

mechanical...nothing I'm aware of. Electrical however is a little different story though much, much improved on the 06+ vfr's

I have a friend who has a GSXR 750- great bike, but wouldnt do for long hauls!

What is your definition for long haul? In the OP you say 1-2 hrs which is nothing. I've done an 8 hr ride 2up in addition to a couple back to back 10hr days on my 600s.

That isn't to say buy a gsxr if you are constantly planning 8 hour rides, but don't rule it out if you are only planning 2-3hr rides.

My back only starts to hurt on my bike when im riding on the highway for like an hour non stop, in town, its fine.

ah gotcha yea I don't care what bike I'm on....1 hour slab is max for me and that better be on the way to the good shit

tank bags can make highway slightly more bearable, but it still sucks

Cleveland is horrible for riding, it is a good hour to any decent roads, and then an hour back at the end of the day. Usually the hour out is not bad and goes quickly, the hour back is killer.

Pretty soon everyone on this forum is going to have either a VFR, 675, or Multi!!! Haha

I promise not to let that happen.

I do like the 675's, and I have nothing against VFR's, but there are other bikes I'd buy first. I like the Monster series, and the Sport Classic 1200, but new Ducs are too rich for my blood.

I know there have been a lot of "keep the 650" suggestions, but if the OP wants more horsepower, keeping the 650 isn't going to feed that desire. I would still suggest getting some track time to improve the nut between the seat and the bars, but sometimes you just want hooligan potential on the street. I like noise and acceleration, and I get rip from stoplight to stoplight a lot more often than I can hit the track. Plus it's fun to embarrass sportscars that cost 10 times your bike.

Has anyone suggested a Kawasaki Z750, or something similar? The Yamaha FZ8's look awesome on paper. I haven't ridden one though. My brother almost bought one, but (ironically) opted for an SV650S instead.

I DONT really want to buy new, but was considering something 650cc-1 liter, 5-7k price range, & 09'+ model year.

I prefer a sport or sport touring bike.

Any serious advice would be greatly appreciated!:bow:

You get all that you want in a bike that provides 80MPG but may not be as fast as the SV. Buy it new for $7k msrp

The NC700 line is a great utility bike but is a significant downgrade in power and handling from the SV. Does not seem to be what the OP was asking for.

Same reason I wouldnt suggest a Vstrom, though I love mine).

After deliberation and speaking with "the wife" I think I'm going to keep my bike another summer and consider buying a bike in a year. During the winter I'm told bike sales are slow and it's easier to buy a bike for cheap. Financially for me right now it's not feasable. Im going to get my valves checked (im at 20,xxx miles), new chain/sprocket, and an oil change.

on my bike front and back, trying to fig out what cold PSI should be? I cannot find any info anywhere online, it's strange. I want to make sure it's @ the recommended PSI or around that.
