Back when I was a kid....

This is floating around facebook:

If you grew up on home cooked meals, you rode a bike with no helmet, your parents house was not "child-proof" , you got a whippin' when you misbehaved, had 3 TV channels you got up to change or went outside to turn the antenna, school started with the Pledge of Allegiance, stores were closed on Sunday, you drank water out of a water hose and still turned out okay, re post this and show that you survived!!! AMEN.

Thought it'd be funny to discuss how things are different now. So I'll add to this with:

We had one phone, paper maps, actual phone books, toys were made from metal, the house and car doors were left unlocked, dad didn't call your cell phone to come home-he whistled really loud, you had to rewind movies to watch them.....

Back when I was young.

My first TV didn't have a remote (neither did the stereo), you had to get off your butt and turn the knob to change the channels. We had to upgrade from pulse dialing to tone dialing on the phone so we could use free dialup internet (Juno if I remember) and the pc we owned still had dual floppy drives, cd's for computers hadn't been invented yet. Taking a rifle to school was OK as long as you where on the shooting team and you had practice that day. Audio CD's where new technology and I spent years replacing all my cassette tapes. Riding dirtbikes on the street was accepted by the police as long as you gave cars right of way. Most certainly different times.

My high school had both a rifle team and trap-shooting team, as well as a shooting club. It wasn’t at all unusual to see students carrying cases, or even slung rifles down the halls in the morning—especially guys that hunted before school. Our school actually had an extended Thanksgiving break, since rifle season (this was not in Ohio) begins the Monday following.

No one kept locks on their lockers…When there was a new student who did, most were suspicious of what it was they were hiding.

I lived in a rural area, and everybody knew everybody…The local store-owner would allow kids to run a tab for soda and snacks, and pay it down when they had change.

That's the way it should be. Sad

I remember popcorn was made in that popcorn maker that always jammed.

Porn was in magazines and VHS. Cut off shirts were actually cool with some Ocean Pacific shorts as well. MTV played only music. Rap music was good. Nintendo was the best thing ever. SuperSoakers were the guns to have. Saturday morning cartoons that weren't anime crap.

...much more.

The cable tv "remote" with the 30' cord and the slide channel controls.

Fuzzy car radio reception as your parents turned the dial trying to get the station to come in.

Sleeping in the rear window on long car trips, or laying in the floorboards.

On those long car trips, no electronic distractions. Mom would read, or you all would actually talk or play games. License plate games, road sign game, etc.

Remembering the "markers" on 8-tracks to get to the beginning of the song that you wanted on another track ("Okay, if I switch from track 1 to track 3 right after the third chorus of Love Gun, it'll put me at the beginning of Rock and Roll All Nite...").

(FWIW, I'm 43...)

When I was a kid cartoons were awesome and now they are the absolute shit worst. I love blaming lack of quality cartooning of contributing to the reason kids these days are the worst

Back in the day women stayed in the kitchen lol @ gen3flygirl

Only 27 here but back when i was a kid, GAS WAS UNDER $1... I remember the cable remote being on a chord. cartoons from my parents age where cool and still are, Michael Jackson was black lol (had too) and playing sports was about having fun and not so much about winning, that was a bonus. If you wanted air condition in your car you had to roll down the window and i also remember when cars use to have one side mirror
