Are you middle class?

Thought this article was kind interesting but I have to wonder how much the "rural" areas bring down the cities, esp with regard to New York and Ohio:

Actually I was reading Jalopnik and it was one of the "trending" links on the sidebar. But I have to say I was lured in a little because I am so new to Ohio and really have no idea what the socioeconomic breakdown is like.

Totally kidding anyway.

I am fortunate enough to be above the scales shown, but I do think these are misrepresented because of the rural areas.

Info on Columbus http://www.city-data.com/income/income-Columbus-Ohio.html

Just for a comparison, info from City Data. This doesn't match exactly the info above, but just to give an apples to apples comparison.

Median household income in Columbus in 2009:

Columbus: $41,370

State: $45,395

But when you zoom out to Franklin county (so capturing some of the burbs)

Estimated median household income in 2009: $47,416 ($42,734 in 1999)

This county: $47416

Ohio: $45395

Then if you 'zoom out' again to Columbus MSA, it's closer to the $43k-44k number

Middle Class

Pros - You can contribute to the consumer driven society and feel good about your purchasing power.

Cons - You and/or your kids never qualify for financial aid.

'Merican dream!

Was this based off gross income from pay checks?

here's what I have been told.

If you are making an annual income of...

1x your age you are behind

2x your age you are slightly ahead of average

3x your age you are doing well

4x your age you are "well off"

...for where you are (stage) in life regarding age

I am unaware of what they say about 5x, 6x, etc but I assume it means you are quasi-rich (but that has a certain "relativity" value to it)
