  1. There's a previous thread sorta like this, some good ideas kicked around.. http://www.ohioriders.net/showthread.php?t=90735
  2. I'd grab it, but haggle so you could sell later if needed. Its nice.
  3. Your doing the right thing by planning another season on your 500 and then doing a 600 - 650 bike step up. Getting more experience counts a lot for a novice rider - favorite quote on that... Luck & Experience "You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck." When a newbie rider buys more bike than they can handle, they use the luck up much faster than if they learn on a ride thats a better fit.
  4. A VFRD member did a ride very close to that - enjoy. http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/72915-well-youre-a-long-way-from-home-21-days-across-the-united-states/
  5. For the most part I buy all my cars and bikes used from a private owner vs any kind of dealer. I want to get the whole story on the bike/car before I decide anything. Also I have wrenched on a lot of cars/bikes so I'm good at inspecting stuff for condition. That said, watch craigslist, cycle trader, even look in the DDN want adds. Patience is key. (Agree withe the consenses of ebay no way, unless local)
  6. I bought my VFR800 off ebay from a guy in Indianapolis. Guy said title was free and clear. Was ok, but I had to get a notory to sign off to allow me to get a Ohio title. The thing about the bike on ebay is you are taking the word of the seller that its ok. On my viffer, I didnt discover it till a month later that I had the bike in my posession, is that it is a California emissions spec bike. If I had known that up front, I may have passed on the deal. Over all I am happy with the bike, (stripped the CA junk) - but next go 'round - there will be no bikes bought unless I can directly inspect the bike and talk face to face to the owner.
  7. Thanks I guess. I hate the fall back time. Gets dark way to early. Wish they would just leave it alone as is now.
  8. Always wanted one of those.....
  9. ^^^ Both ways - I'm kinda at how steep is steep? I might be tempted to do the dirt bike thing - stand on the pegs and cover the rear brake. Its probly a gotta be there thing, but covering the front could an invite for a wash out. - Caveat for me - I yanked the linked brakes off my ride. - Hated them.
  10. The linked brakes on your ride will make it a PIA.
  11. ^^^^ Would love to have one those sport classics - very cool...
  12. I've learned my lesson on not to buy a cheap mc battery. The last one I got was a autozone replacement and it lasted 19 months. At the end of it the thing decided to shit battery acid all over my swingarm. -- Spend the bucks for a quality part. Some electric stuff from a viffer forum junkie...... - Your bike has a wiring harness recall. Has it been done? - Viffer's are prone to charging system failure. A lot of the problem is honda cheaped out and wiring and connectors are undersized for the duty required. - Spend the bucks on a multimeter and check system as part of routine maitenance. Every oil change is a good interval. (I added a digital meter up front to watch mine.) - The connectors are prone to corrosion - check and clean anually. - There is a high fallout of the stock OEM shunt style R/Rs. Its worth it to go to a MOSFET type or Series type. - OEM stators are good for about 50k, not bad. But the 16 gauge wire to the R/R is a bit wimpy. - There's miles of threads on fixes and upgrades if interested. If you want me to post a quick check list on checking the charge system, let me know.
  13. VFR750 wouldnt be too bad. Its a pretty good for a do all bike. Even though its about 90 hp, its not exactly a quick reving bike. With the V4 its got a ez tractable mid range.
  14. I had a '95 for about 6 years. Rode it everywhere local and all over the place WV to Georgia on multiple trips. Great bike!
  15. Interesting idea. Looks like the the brake torque is transfered direct from the disk to the center hub instead of the classic disk to button to hub. Kinda one of those - why didnt I think of that ideas. Probly cheaper to assemble in that it goes together with a hex wrench and you dont need the the button hardware and the special machine to put it together.
  16. Jeez, cruisers are all about comfortable. A sofa on wheels. Lay back enjoy the day. Ok - big hint going on here. --Day Trips Exactly that. Its a different style of riding. Performance is really not part of the equation. Just big torque. Pull the bike along at 50mph. 0-60? Who cares? Been riding a bunch of years and really the only way for sanity is with the multi bike syndrome. (MBS) The core of it has to be a least 2 bikes - a sport/sporty bike plus a cruiser. One to go fast, one to go slow. Sorta like sometimes you like steak, other days a pizza is good. To the OP. One bike? Your talking VFR. Quasi comfortable. Great for day rides. Good all around performance. Weekend mountain twisty capable. Multi week touring if desired. Capable as commuter. Its a core bike.
  17. Agree with Jbot, its been down hard a couple times. You have no clue if the forks or frame has been tweeked or other hidden issues. If it we me, I would pass. There's others.....
