So you think a Miata is gay?

I used to think just that not much more then a year ago. Then I decided I wanted to do something more then drag race and street race and needed something to do it in.

Some of you may remember last year when I bought the blue one and could not shut up about how much fun I was having. To be honest I wanted to go autocrossing so bad I just had to buy something. When Paul White threw that car up for sale on CR I thought, its RWD, people autocross the shit out of those, and I can just scrape together enough money to buy it. I bought it, and I had never driven one before in my life. I remeber making the long drive back to Columbus wondering if I had just made a really stupid mistake. Even as beat up as it was it ran good, I fixed it up, and started having fun. Showed up to a couple Miata club autocrosses and ran pretty good, even hurt a few feelings on my cheap ass "Walmart" tires that weren't even mounted the right way. Best of all my daughter loved it too.

Thats my daugter in the passenger seat :)

So exactly one year ago I came across a great deal to tade in the Silveado I was bored to death with for the Miata I have now. As impactical as that trade was, I wouldn't chage it at all. For those of you who do not know, a MazdaSpeed Miata is quite a bit different from a regulr Miata, it has a turbo 1.8, much better posi, 6 speed close ratio gearbox, 4.10 gears, bigger sway bars, stiffer springs, as well as some other cosmetic stuff.

So the real point of this thread is for me to brag about how much fun I've had all year playing with this car. Many people have gone for rides, and been very shocked, not sure if the car is that good or people just don't see it that way but it's a very fun thing to shock people with what a car will do. It has been to many autocrosses, I took it to Nelson Ledges, put it on the dyno, and I even took it to the drag strip. I have seen over 1.08 Gs on the track (not sure how super accurate that is but I think it's safe to say 1G), won my class a few times at these club autocross (not a huge brag, but it's fun to be competetive), it makes 163rwhp and 155rwtq, and on top of everything it went 14.6 in the quarter. The car has not missed a beat, continues to be fun every time I drive it, and most people don't even know what it is.

and now some pics.

You don't need a car with HP to have a ton of fun.

I was able to drive a Honda S2000 during a autox up here in Cleveland and it's a damn fun car. You can toss the thing right or left and it does what you tell it to do. Don't need to worry about weight transfer, and can just hammer it anywhere.

They are perfect driver cars (miata).

Great read.

Can't wait for spring brother!

Yup, I'm already bored. Winter time sucks.

For now I'm just going to leave the Miata alone. It is such a blast the way it is.

This one is hung up around the house, having my family be so supportive is awesome.

You wheel & deal on your cars and parts, mod/build your cars yourself, drag race them, daily drive them, autocross them, roll race them -- and enjoy them to the fullest.

I admire someone who does that much more than someone who buys a Fisker and keeps it in the garage, or someone who buys a muscle car and drives like a grandma, or someone who buys any car based on what others tell him is fast or cool.

Get what you like and like what you get. I'd say you're winning.

I challenge anybody who dogs a miata to get in and go for a ride, your tune will change before the first lap is over.

I have been for a couple of rides in this car, and it was pretty insane.

Pretty sure there is a video out there of some of your runs from this summer...

What if you can't FIT in a miata?

Looks like a blast! I remember seeing you out at an autocross this summer with your daughter. I brought my daughter out once, she's a bit younger but had a blast!

I like the mazdaspeed miata but didn't fit too well in it. Autocrossed an S2000 and that was a blast, also kind of like the MR2 Spyder. We'll see but whatever it is I definitely want a drop top.

Any plans for next season?

Well introduce yourself next time. I barely fit in it, but I make it work. Nexxt season if I do anything it will get a new set of tires, but I have other toys and this thing is pretty well balanced as it sits. I worry more that I'd make it worse changing something then making it better. I still think I can get faster with more seat time.

How much do those even weigh?

I think they're just a bit over 2500 lbs.

I need to weigh it but I was under the impression they were closer 2400 pounds. Not sure.
