Disclaimer
Yes, and yes... the 73's had rear chrome, but no front. '74s have no chrome. And, update on the Buick V6 Nascar engine - it blew up on the dyno about 6 weeks ago.

Disclaimer
448hp @ 8300rpm before it let loose... my brother needed at least 475hp to run the index, so he would've had some additional work anyway. Does kinda suck for him though.
garysol1
Any idea what caused the valve failure?
Disclaimer
My brother would be a better one to answer that. I know that engine was built to the ragged edge to begin with because it was going to compete in the Super Stock class, so I guess it was just too close to the cliff and it let go. snodgrass23
looks like some pretty bad detonation going on in that cylinder. The other cylinders seem to be fine, so either that one wasn't getting enough fuel for some reason or it was getting more intake air than the others. Was there any pitting in the cylinder opposite it? If so, it could be something with the intake feeding too much air to those rear cylinders. I'm guessing the tune was pushing the envelope already, and something caused that one to go over the edge.
garysol1
looks like some pretty bad detonation going on in that cylinder. Detonation? Looks to me like a valve head just beat the shit out of everything but I am no expert. My Buick V6 ownership experience was all with bolt on parts and tuning with a Direct Scan system. Nothing compared to this beast
Disclaimer
I don't think it was detonation... I think gary's right... the valve just beat the shit out of the top of the piston.Like I said, I don't have the super specifics regarding how my brother built the engine, but I'm guessing he raised the compression, increasing the interference, and at 8300rpms the valve probably floated in that cylinder for one reason or another and that was the end result. snodgrass23
yeah, you're probably right. Looking again, the damage is localized around the damaged valve. Valve float would be a valid explanation.

cfd37buckeye
My Dad and I restored a 57 Chevy Bel Air, and a 62 Impala SS 409 4 speed. They both reside with him, but they are ours. I do not have a garage big enough right now.
